How I play WoW TBC as a blind person explained

A few days ago I mentioned to my guild that I was blind and attempted to answer questions about how I played. I realised pretty quickly that it would be much more viable to try and show some of this off in a video, so here we are.
Topics covered include:
Some of the addons I use, as well as highlighting "SKU", the main addon enabling me to play.
Showing how I'm able to read things like chats, quest objectives, etc.
The navigation system. (Lets be honest, that's why most of you are here probably).
This was a real quick and dirty explanation with absolutely 0 script/preparation (can you tell?) 😂
Eventually I am planning to replace this with far more professional and informative videos, as I truly believe more people should know about this and the insane amount of effort that has gone to getting playability to where it is now, given the various limitations of the WoW API.
Below are links for anyone who might be looking to try this out. I will preface this by saying that some of the info may be a little dated, given the rapid speed of updates. It still should be more than enough for anyone looking to get started though.
*IMPORTANT!:* This will only work with World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic, not regular Classic or Retail.
Setting up WoW TBC and the game:
duugu.github.i...
Discord:
/ discord
Set of getting started videos by German player Nils. Again, some things may be a little dated:
• 01 getting started
PS. Apologies for the channel not being the most aesthetically pleasing right now, I do have plans to rectify this. I've had this channel for god knows how long and this is the most I've ever done with it. 😛
At the end of the day, it's my hope that this sheds some light on how blind people too, can enjoy games. :)

Hi everyone! Firstly, I would just like to say that I'm honestly quite humbled at how much attention this video has been getting lately and I honestly can't thank you all enough. I haven't had a lot of chance lately to keep up due to life commitments and such, but I'll endeavor to respond to as many of you as I can over the next little bit. I genuinely made this thinking that a few people at most would see this in a small discord community for the guild I was in at the time. After seeing comments from people with their stories about how they or a friend/relative etc was blind and thought they'd never be able to play a game again, I can't express how it feels truly to be able to see that I've given some people out there hope and inspiration. It's because of this that I'm now inspired to do more content for everyone. I haven't played actively in a little while now, but between this video and Cata round the corner, I've been wanting to get back into it, as well as expand this into other games. I've seen some people saying they'd like to see how I handle things like dungeons, from a WoW Point of view what would you all want to see more of?

It is tough to put into words and explain how i feel watching this. There are so many emotions all at once, but they are all good emotions. I started with feeling sad as most, but watching your excitement and effort quickly changed that into some really big hope and inspiration. As others have said, i love playing wow and I at first couldnt imagine not being able to see it or other things but you gave me hope that even in the toughest situations, humans can adapt and find joy. I really hope that we advance medically to help all and every disability and illness. I pray to god that you will continue to find joy in life and keep you positive. A funny side is that i shared this video with my wife, who just started playing with me for the first time, and she said you are playing 1000 better than her, lol. Sorry for the ramble. I'm just speaking without thinking, but I do look forward to any of your next videos, so please make more. It doesn't have to be about wow. I would watch anything you make. Best of luck, my friend!

I'm always so impressed with how people with extremely life altering conditions can be so positive and motivated sometimes. I'm relatively standard health and struggle a lot with some things and then will see people who have a condition that would devastate me just living life. It might help to not have a frame of reference like if you've never seen a video game so you don't have a reference of what you're missing. Super cool to see people able to get enjoyment out of things they seemingly wouldn't be able to interact with, and I love that we're getting more and more medical knowledge and accessibility features every year. My grandpa has been having a lot of eye issues and surgeries lately but it's incredible how much better he's gotten with new surgeries and some luck

Back when the OG Cataclysm had just been released i one day woke up blind. This was in the middle of my WoW addiction days and i was a raidleader in my guild, i was absolutely gutted to no longer be able to read the chat or even throw a trap down, all i could do was do my rotation blindly and just hope for the best so i had to quit playing games, but also stop reading books, stop watching tv etc. It was such a dark period of my life. I was mostly sad that i couldn't game anymore. It took almost 9 months for my eyes to heal up again (Neuritis optica). It makes me really happy to know there are addons now that help vision impaired people play games again. Congrats, i'm really happy for you and kudos to whoever made these addons. Game on!

Really awesome video. My favorite part was 38:00 where you’re just hype for the bow upgrade. The whole video I had mixed feelings about how a person could really sink their teeth in and enjoy the experience in the way I remember first playing. Like it was all very impressive, but I felt sad because for example you didn’t know whether you’re running into a tree vs a wall vs anything else. But then the reader says the bow stats and you’re just reflexively like hell yeah we’re gonna need that. Good stuff. You probably learned WoW lore more than 99% of players too with actually listening to everything like that.

Watching this impressed me. Especially in Teldrassil. Where, there's A LOT of trees (and hills) that can be difficult to maneuver. And, seeing a blind person still maneuver around, even with the bumps here and there is impressive. I have reported bots for just walking into trees, before but if I were looking at you, I can tell you're not a bot because you did attempt to move. Versus bots who didn't really try to move and insisted on running into the tree. Definitely gives me a different perspective on who's really a bot and who's maybe just blind? I don't know, maybe I'm just good at knowing who's a person and who's a bot. I've played with deaf people, before but never a blind person. I'm always happy to help anyone. Looks like you're playing Classic WoW, and if I was still playing WoW (I quit again because of more changes), I'd love to maybe even do just some quests and hang out in a Discord server voice chat and just enjoy explaining what we're fighting. Happy hunting!

@@Themartian2112 Hey there! Apologies for getting back to this one so late. I'm actually planning to do an updated video for classic, there has been so many updated and this is now horribly out of date. The addon even supports new classic era stuff too (so WoW vanilla and hardcore). Would be glad to help where I can. Since you also mentioned retail, there's a whole separate addon called Blindslash which is still relatively new and at this stage is still in a fairly early stage of development. Over the past few days the popularity of the addon and people realising that there's work being done for retail has meant that the Discord is suddenly picking up nicely. I'm planning to sit down myself later today and test it out for the first time, but I'll also be doing a video on that and a few other associated addons once I figure out how it all works. Here's Blindslash on curse: www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/blindslash Also a link to the Discord where people are helping each other out: discord.gg/XEF9UGyh Again, more than happy to help where I can!

So awesome. I'm a programmer, and at my job every day I work on TTS for our application's accessibility and it really taught me how important all of it is for any application although you may not think about it at first. Especially watching a video like this. Super inspirational. I will always strive to make my games and apps as accessible as possible

I hope you found people who gave you an opportunity to play dungeons and raids. If you able to, please continue making videos, I believe there's people who'll enjoy your content.

I am sorry but when the music started playing at 5:07, a tsunami of nostalgia hit me as he was explaining how he is going to demonstrate to us how a quest is done, and my first not even thought but feeling is how happy I am for all of this to exist, the person that put effort into the addon, our friend here trying it out and the happy tone in his voice I do not by any mean, shape or form, to mean anything bad or negative, it just absolutely blasts every neuron of my mind to think of what this person here has overcome, the cheer will and amount of effort that they themselves do not grasp the vastness of! I wish to see more videos like this, your take on world of warcraft, the things you loved, the places, the songs! Thank you for sharing this with us, as someone that played world of warcraft since the age of 6, for now about 16 years, quitting after getting himself neck-deep into corporate slavery life, this video felt like a stranger walking to me telling me about how they visited and experienced that which I am so familiar of, I'd call it perhaps even home, warmth and joy is what I feel now. Love you all

Hey, thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad this too can bring you as much enjoyment. So fascinating! I'm amazed how well you can understand that screen reader for the quests, because to me it sounded like complete gibberish. But I guess it's a matter of getting used to it. I noticed you didn't loot any of the mobs, so how do you know where to click on the screen to grab the loot? And how do you know where new quest NPCs are? You ran past a quest NPC when you were filling up the vial without picking up the quest, so I'm curious how that works.

This was awesome and inspirational to watch. It also made me reflect on all the past years of playing wow and the times when I could have been more patient with other players I've grouped with. We don't know who is behind the keyboard, how they are playing the game and the additional challenges they face while doing so. It's very impressive to see you handle all that auditory information from your addons so quickly. Every player should see this as a reminder of what makes gaming so great.

Your video reminded me of how I used to talk as a young kid on ventrilo, raging at random people and calling them blind, complaining about nonsense, etc. The way you sound so happy despite such a difficult disability gave me such an emotional shock. You literally sound happier than I've ever been while playing this game. It's because I'm a terrible person inside, and I got (and am getting) what I deserve. I hope this video reaches more people's recommended.

This is absolutely incredible and inspirational. I haven't played WoW in well over a decade, but it brings me joy to see someone experiencing the version of the game I used to play. It's a bit bittersweet to me that you cannot see the visuals, which are a huge part of my fond memories of early WoW. But when I try to put myself in your shoes, I'm glad you are able to play it at all. I hope developers see videos like this and incorporate better accessibility into their games. More people should be able to experience them, no matter what.

I know blind people can play games, but I didn’t realize they could play multiplayer games like this with other players and all. This is so cool! It’s also amazing that someone took the time to make an add-on that could help like this, it’s inspiring and as an aspiring programmer makes me want to consider accessibility more with things I work on. Part of me kind of wants to try this sort of stuff out in a single player game just to see what it’s like. So neat!!

I don't know if you are going to read this, and sorry for my bad english, I'm a brazilian doing my best to write this message you :) It's really important to make videos like this, because people don't know the reality of blind people, videos like this can help all of us, including me, to understand better your difficulties, and it's amazing that you can enjoy the marvelous world of wow. With that said, I don't know if you read the news, but Microsoft will launch a new PC, with IA integrated locally, that can aid you in your games. They made a presentation with Minecraft, the IA was constantly telling the player what was going on the screen, what kind of enemy he was facing, and I think this technology will be a big leap for blind people in videogames, since the IA can tell you in real time whats going on, what it's appearing on the screen for you! Please, keep uploading, your channel is very important for gaming community

I never would have even imagined that addons that offered this level of accessibility would exist let alone even be possible. Goes to show how innovative and dedicated the wow addon community is. It makes me really happy to see gaming spaces taking steps to improve accessibility even for people who most would probably write off as simply being completely unable to enjoy video games. I think stuff like these addons could spark a larger movement for accessibility in gaming spaces beyond just wow, but to other genres and platforms. Super interesting stuff, awesome video.
