Amazing lesson man, I'm an advanced drummer dabbling into jazz. my chops and limb independence were (mostly) all there, but these comping ideas elevated my game! Thanks!
This is a wonderful tutorial! Thank you for your content, Keep making tutorials, you have a lot of great context your playing is clean tasteful, and practical.
Very nice bro. Man those pies sound sweet. Your technique and left hand ghosting is sweet! What kit you playing. Those drums are equally sweet. Thx for sharing knowledge and application. Drum on. Dean
@@drakeondrums Thank you. Most of the technical stuff you talk about in this vid I was aware of, but I think I might just transcribe the stuff you play when you play freely, because these parts are on fire.
Nice man, sounds clean. Your hands are smooth- a point I wanted to add/something I think is important: when it comes to all of this stuff, but especially the syncopation independence practice, my understanding is that Alan Dawson always taught it in the context of a song or a form. I think that’s really important, and really helps bridge the gap from the shed to the bandstand. Learning to comp tunes between the limbs, and also comp tunes over the ostinstos can be really powerful. It’s something I definitely think about/hear a lot of the great drummers mention again and again. Just a thought!
Alan Dawson also came up with the rudimental ritual. I can't even do it yet but I see a lot of his former students like the great Tony Williams or Billy Kilson who swear by it.
This really helped me find some fresh ideas! Thank you for this! It can be a bit challenging to comp tastefully without ruining the swing groove. I can't wait to try more hi-hat off beat patterns now 🙌
