Custom Framer here! If you’re framing your prints, the mat is more than just a design choice, it’s actually a protective element! An acid-free and lignin-free mat helps separate the artwork from the glass or frame to prevent damage that can occur, while also not damaging your print over time. Also, use UV-protecting glass to prevent fading over time.

So, you have some good info here, but one thing I’ve noticed in my pursuit in trying to learn how to print, is no one seems to want to explain the technical side of printing. What file type is best? What resolution? How do you re-size properly to print photos? How do you add the white boarder? Is that using photoshop? Lightroom? No one ever seems to walk through this part.
@JorisHermans
@JorisHermans 4 года назад
Good point. Didn't even crossed my mind... I always edit RAW and save them as tiff. That works best for me and for the printer I'm working with. The resolution depends on how big you want to print. The prints in this video are 24" longest side. Years ago, I did prints like this from 24mp photos. It's possible but then you need to blow them up in Photoshop. And Photoshop actually does a pretty good job with standard settings for resizing. But ideally, 36mp is better for prints around that size. Then you don't need to resize. The white border is also don in Photoshop but your printen should be able too do all that. I do it by making the canvas space larger in Photoshop. Edit: Oh, about the megapixels, it depends on the purpose of your photos. Those 24" prints from 24mp photos are more than good enough for a lot of users but there is slight a difference in image quality when using 36mp for example...
@jeffbrown8117

Joris Hermans THANK YOU! I was also told that TIFF was best for printing, but the professional printer I’m thinking about using (Bay Photo Lab) says they “prefer” JPG although they do accept TIFF. They also require all photos to be in 8 bit sRGB (or adobe RGB) which I thought the 8 bit color request was interesting because I have a choice to do 16 bit and just assumed 16 bit would be better and couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t accept it. This is great info though so thank you for this reply!

@@jeffbrown8117 There is a ton to learn when it comes to printing. Viewing distances, color management, soft proofing, paper type, ink type . . . these all impact prints and are extremely important. If you want to pay to use a service where many of these decisions are made for you, then the primary topics you need to learn about are resolution and color management: profiling your monitor, and using icc printer profiles for soft proofing. In regards to why Bay would ask for 8 bit srgb files, it's pretty straight forward: 1) paper and inks can not achieve the same color density and depth that a back lit monitor can, therefore there's no sense sending all of that 16bit color info over to a printer if it can't reproduce it. 2) .jpg is a substantially smaller file that visually speaking shows very little if any quality loss when printed (depending on compression amount of course). So, sending a 15mb .jpg file to a printer vs a 500mb saves a huge amount of time, and as we know time is $. I've simplified this as best as I can and I hope my response is helpful.

@Jeff Brown Those are all great questions and ones I had (and have) myself every time I try to print. Check out a book by Jeff Schewe called "The Digital Print". He goes into detail on all of these things and more. Its a great reference to have so you don't have to scour the interwebs everytime you want to print. Adding the white border can be done easily in Lightroom's Print module.

It was refreshing to see your video. First off, I am new to you tube, I'm a pro photographer and never had the time to browse through you tube before Covid, other than to find an occasional video on how to fix something. Your video was refreshing because what I've seen on you tube are alleged photographers with all of their photos on instagram or some other social media outlet. (There's a few exceptions where I've seen some really good photographers, who all print their images.) An image on a computer will never look like a printed image because a computer screen backlights an image, plus those images are usually about one inch in size. Anything looks good at that size. A good print shows me the skill of the photographer and/or the lab they use. I have printed with Epson printers for years. My current Epson printer is the Epson SureColor P600. It's not their top of the line printer, but it's not too far down the line of affordable printers. I think they replaced it with the Epson SureColor P700. It is capable of printing 13x18 prints, but I usually print no larger than 11x14 on it, with Epson and other papers and it's a superb printer, capable of beautiful colors and/or b&w. (No I'm not working for Epson nor are they paying me to say that, however, should they take note of this ...) Anything larger than that goes to Bay Photo, they've been printing for me for a long time and do an excellent job. I had a storefront studio that I closed about five years ago, and when I hired someone to assist me I would ask them to bring a portfolio of their work. If they didn't have prints, but instead asked me to look at their work on a media platform, they didn't get an interview. A print will tell me if you know what you're doing as a photographer, kinda like separating the men from the boys. So, thank you for being a younger photographer who still believes in printing. Plus, after we're dead all of our images on electronic media are going to disappear, no one cares to look for them. On paper, people will save them, so we have an opportunity to be remembered, via our legacy as a photographer rather than a computer geek.

There are Canon Imageprograf printers that can do 24" wide for around $1000. That's what I'm using and the per-print savings are fantastic. The Canons can even print on canvas, which similarly priced printers from other makers can't do. They're only 4 color at that price range, but that's all you really need when you can calibrate the output yourself. There are pigment and dye options. I prefer dye for the very slightly smaller droplets and transparency, but the pigment prints will practically last forever. I get great results with 4 color on quality paper.

Some of the things you said are exactly why I loathe pixel peeping. When you take a photo it’s meant to be seen as a whole. Not zoomed in at 300% searching for minor imperfections. I always make my edits based on what an entire photo looks like, whether I crop it or not. If I do crop it, then I start from there.

I love this, but I kind of don't agree with printing elsewhere. JUSTIFY THE COST of doing it yourself. I just started my own printing on a Pro-1000, and I learn something new from doing so every single day. To keep this printer running, I cannot go over 24h without triggering an idle cleaning cycle, and honestly I love that constraint. It makes me appreciate the nuance that goes into editing, particularly retouching. Labs are great in my opinion for hobbyists and non-photographers. But for photographers, everything from the initial custom color profile (I use a ColorChecker Digital SG and Lumariver software to profile for CaptureOne) to the detail work required in editing, particularly in background cleanup, has a drastic impact on a finished print that you simply don't take control over unless you're printing yourself-every single day.

Not as professional as you. I use a Pro 100 & a color checker passport for camera profiles. I will relocate in the next 1-3 years & move up to the pro 100 or Epson SC P5000 after the move. Nothing like printing your own work, so satisfying!

Very nice detailed and helpful information. I stopped printing my own photos shortly after hanging a couple of my prints on the wall at home. I realized the excitement of looking at those photos had worn off, and they were no longer special to me. This also include other people's art, so I leave my walls completely bare. I was a photojournalist, and chose that type of photography because I loved to have other people look at my work. The thrill of looking at my own work only lasts for a short while, then quickly wears off. That's just me of course.

Ordered a very contrast-y black and white picture printed on matte paper yesterday🫠 Today, I already heard two times that that might've been the wrong choice. 50x75 print, so that'll be a very large mistake. At least I got a good deal, so it won't be too expensive if I end up not liking it. Never had anything printed that large. Never even ordered a print. I also heard I should maybe have increased the exposure for the print by .25 to .5 stops. Let's see how it turns out. If I don't like it, I'll go to a shop next time and get some good advice.

this is good, i feel in love with printing during my senior year in undergrad, the printer the campus had was so amazing it was an Epson. So I saved up got Espon photography specifically printer but never really used it but I am trying to get back t what I love. and this is giving me nostalgic vibes! what printer are you using if you print yourself ?
@JorisHermans

I used an Epson for a while. We had those in college too 😉 Now, I just have my guy and he does a great job. At the moment I don't feel the need to do it myself... especially when I want them mounted on dibond.

@@JorisHermans agreed one day I will get to that point. Now I did research the Dibond, it is expensive material huh? id like to try it one day. I will have to find a place here in LA. I prefer frames but dibond seems perfect for showcasing.

@@capturedbypaige9484 Hey, I prefer framed too! 😊 Dibond is pretty expensive but I use it every time someone buys a framed print. Unless they specifically don't want the print mounted. That last photo in the video, with the white frame is mounted on dibond first and then framed without glass in front of it. It's a very durable combination. That's how I like it but there are so many possibilities 😉

Hello, great vid. Used to print all my photos on Plexi. But I'm looking for something else now. I am gonna try the (baryta) print on dibond for sure. Regarding the "white frame". I like the look of it a lot. But what are your guidelines to use regarding the width of the white frame in comparision to the foto? What measurements do you use? Bedankt! Do you know a good printing service in Antwerpen / Mol regio? ;-)
@JorisHermans
@JorisHermans 4 года назад
Hey! The white border depends on the photo and the purpose of the photo. I don't have a fixed guide for that. Just what look good to my eye. Same size print but different photo or different project might have different size white border 😊 As for printers: Claes The Picture Lab in Antwerpen and Studio Fase in Olmen 👊🏻🙏🏻

I would have appreciated info on ink/printers. Paper is only one part of the printing solution.
@Dahrenhorst
@Dahrenhorst 4 года назад
The monitor has to be color-calibrated, the printer has to be calibrated according to the paper which is used and of course the selection of the printer itself vastly influences the print quality, and last but not least the selection of the paper and the particular ink also plays a big role. So yes, paper is only one part of the print process and result.

I have used both Epson and Canon 44" printers, and today one is hard pressed to see any difference, i cant say wich printer a print comes from. Today i am on my 2nd Canon 44", but i use Canon because of the ease of printhead change and lack of clogging, i regard print quality to be equal between the brands. People who dont run the printer evry day or week can not live with an 44" Epson printer, its an nightmare from hell, her is one that can testify: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bf6kOEtgQqE.html Regarding ink there is only Pigmented ink that is useable, both Canon and Epson run that as "standard", but be aware if comercial (large volume poster avertise for shops) printers they often use dye based ink and that will fade very fast. Regarding ink there is not much option, just buy the standard pigmented from Canon, Epson, HP etc and youre fine.
@Dahrenhorst
@Dahrenhorst 4 года назад
@@thecoment3371 That's true, you can't really see a difference in prints from Epson and Canon printers, their differences are in handling and the internal print technology. I personally print only b/w and buy special carbon ink from a German manufacturer which consists of the equivalent number of ink cartridges for my my printer (Epson 800) but comes instead of different colors with 9 uncolored, differently saturated bright grey to pitch black greyscale inks. That's the reason why I have an Epson printer, because this special ink is offered only for this brand.
@thecoment3371
@thecoment3371 4 года назад
@@Dahrenhorst Could you share the supplier for that B&W ink ? I have contact with 3-party pigmented inks suppliers that seems to have quality, they have stands at the SEMA fairs (world expo for large format printing and tools). Until now i have printed at the safe side with OEM inks because i sell some of my (1-2k$) printed photograhs to people so i dont want to take the risk at quality, but i am willing to experiment with B&W for my own use.
