Take a look at bark cloth too, I just had some success making a fur blanket with glue using birch tar to stick the strips of smoked rawhide with the fur still(not leather it seemed like hassle) but stick that onto a beaten sheet of bark, it's kinda stiff but if you have the cuts of fur in strips all facing one way it rolls up well and is warm enough to sleep outdoors all year round,and and the bark cloth itself is a fine cloth for wearing in the style of a malong or sarong, or sewn into proper clothes, you can make the bark cloth from any tree but id recommend those that live on the waters edge, they're usually stickier to resist rotting, this is the simplest quickest way of getting clothing as far as I can see and the only tools you need are clay from the river bank to make containers to make birch tar, and a sharp stone to remove the bark strips and a stick to beat them, the furs are on you, I made a blanket 5ft by 6ft, enough to wrap a couple of people up in an emergency and it took me 27 rabbits, the ones close to me have coats that are roughly 30 to 40cm by 50 to 60cm, so roughly 5x6 furs to make a big blanket, and you can waterproof the reverse side with the birch tar too

*The real art is to make the thread thinner than commercially made threads.* Machine made cotton threads have their limit but threads made by hands can go even finer. That is why the thumbs of the weavers & spinners had to be cut so as to help machine made cloth sell. In earlier times people used to make it unbelievably thin that the cloth looked transparent. If you look at the temple carvings in India the statures look without clothes. But on closer observation you can see their garments are very finely woven and close fitting than what is available even today. Obviously the cotton plant would have been different than those grown today and there could have been some strengthening process. Just like there are more than 3,000 varieties of mangoes in India there would have been at least a few hundred varieties of cotton in India. Unfortunately, today due to industrialization there are about 4 varieties grown today in the whole world.

How do you set the cotton? Like you spin it into single ply yarn... If you removed it from the dowel, it would unwind. How do you make it NOT unwind and hold the twist....
@SkyBrigidRain
@SkyBrigidRain 2 года назад
If you make single ply, you'll have to twist it tight and soak it (Wrapped around a frame of some sort) in really hot water until it cools. I normally make double ply yarn though. The opposing twists keep the yarn from unraveling. But you can still tie a knot at the end to prevent unraveling if you want extra precaution. Then you can either let it set over time, or soak in the hot water, just be sure to dry it very thoroughly. Like gently squeeze it in an absorbent towel before setting it in a warm ventilated place to dry. Usually, two ply or higher can handle itself, but setting with the hot water is better. But you'll have to wrap it around a frame from the dowel before the soaking. That way the yarn is spread out so the hot water hits it faster and it also dries faster.

Wonder how tough it'd be to use some type of needle bristle brush like the type you'd use for brushing matts out of a dog's fur. Use those bristles in something like a hollow wooden dowel or toilet paper tube so you could stick it on a drill, get a thin layer of the cotton wrapped around it then retract the bristles and leave you with a loop of more or less straight cotton fiber. Just a thought.

I'm checking out your video because I'm planning on growing a small field of cotton plants next year and I want to go through the full process from planting and harvesting to making usable fabrics for sewing. Any tips for someone new to the concept? Was traveling and passed a lot of cotton fields through Lyon Mississippi and decided to learn more about cotton. Most of what I found is on the history of cotton and cotton machines but I want to attempt to do the full process by hand. As much as possible at least.
@SkyBrigidRain
@SkyBrigidRain Год назад
For the most part, it's what I described and instructed, as for thin thread, that may require a very close eye and very slower processing. I haven't done the thin twists yet. As far as bleaching or coloring, there are a few natural colors like walnut husks, poke berries, etc. The main point you want to keep in mind is keeping an equal thread while spinning! That takes practice to master. The thicker the twist, the easier it is! So yarn will be little problem for you!!! Very good in winter. But I just haven't done the thing twists yet. But that's just a matter of keeping an eye on the twist and making sure it's in and thin.

Hello, do you have an advice about how to end the cotton thread without untwisting it ? do you have to absolutely tie it to something when you use it to keep it twisted or ? Also much thank for this very good video, its really cool to know all the things one can do by himself
@SkyBrigidRain
@SkyBrigidRain 2 года назад
Thanks! And yes! Normally, the twists only come undone a little bit when you finish spinning the yarn. The strand want to stay put due to the opposing twists in each one. You can also tie a knot in the very end, just make sure you twist the end snuggly before tying the knot. After the spun yarn rests for a few days, there won't be any untwisting on it's own.

You have your spindle backwards. the flat disc goes at the bottom not up where the hook is. the weight of the disc helps to draw out the fibres. you spin it on the ground like a spinning top while gently pulling back on the fibres. no need to do the pulling and twisting as separate steps with putting it down in the middle.
@SkyBrigidRain
@SkyBrigidRain 3 года назад
Oh no, this is a drop spindle. Normally you'd spin it with the handle, the part the yarn is wrapped around, and it spins the yarn as it dangles or drops as you release your grip on the cotton. I did look up a great deal of different spindles and this seemed to be the right one for my needs. Although the viking spindles are good too. This one is missing the notch in the disc though. I plan on making a new one anyway as this one seems quite shabby.

NO!!! Normal cotton seeds are toxic to humans and most animals!!! They can cause anemia and death!!!! I do believe there's a genetically engineered cotton with edible seeds but that is for feeding chickens and other livestock. DON"T EAT COTTON SEEDS!!!!

@@adamakaru2683 Just because the oil is sold doesn't mean the seed is edible!!!! There is a toxin in the cotton seeds that attacks red blood cells!!!! DO NOT EAT COTTON SEEDS!!!!

"it's a lot stronger than most yarn!" Yes,yes it is... and that's because you made rope not yarn! 🤣 Great video btw... don't see very many male spinners

I did make a thick yarn. Even knittened a length of cotton bandage out of it! Far from rope. If I wanted to make rope, I'd have used Yucca, not cotton!
