How I prune Adenium Obesum / Desert Roses

This is how I prune my Adenium for more branching. I use super glue gel to seal wounds. I don't recommend cinnamon. It leaves terrible stains and is not needed.
These were pruned in spring so many look rough from winter. I only prune when they are showing signs of new growth. I prune anytime Spring-Summer when they are actively growing. I do not prune in the fall-winter unless necessary due to branch rot, which is rare.

Update: Gorilla glue is just a bit annoying to peel off later vs regular super glue. Use regular. I may try candle wax next.

Yes, I apply ground cinnamon with a fine brush after pruning my Adenium...

This is the best video I’ve seen on pruning a Desert Rose! Not a lot of useless prologue, the camera actually shows the nodes and the text explaining why you cut where is simple. Thank you! 😊

Thank you so much! About the glue, I realized gorilla glue is way harder to get off than regular super glue. Id rather use a thin later of regular next time. Just be careful bc its more runny. I usually leave the glue, doesn't bother me. And then a year later I'll see it flaking and pick at it.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'll have to go shopping before I prune, but at least now I feel a bit more confidant about it! :D

Whenever your warm season starts up, late spring or early summer is best. Just make sure it seems to be actively growing and making leaves.

Great video Candice - I found you just in time. My first Adenium is being shipped....I can't wait! Q. Doesn't the superglue have any detrimental effect on the plant (chemicals leaching in...) I've seen cinnemmon or plastic shrink wrap being used. Thanks again for the video - keep them coming.
@candicescaudiciformcollection
@candicescaudiciformcollection 2 года назад
Congrats on your first! They are addicting! Superglue doesn't harm them at all. I used to use cinnamon for a few years and realized it didn't do diddly squat for them, infact I think it was worse. With super glue, you don't get shrinkage on branch and it seals out all the bad and keeps moisture in. I am a huge huge fan of switching over to it. It has prevented rot and shrink back better than anything. Many adeniun pros have used it for even gluing a cut caudex down onto a bottle cap or plastic, to root train. Its pretty cool :)

@@candicescaudiciformcollection Here is the link to the video of the guy cutting into the stem to make many branches.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PIy3MkKpnzI.html. See if you think its a good idea - I thought hard pruning forced the plant's energy back into the caudex and so was good. Thnx....

The Fat Boy arrived Monday, looking good except for a few browned leaves (despite the freezing temps). Potted up, watered (with a little kelp kickstart), starting to perk up already. Now he needs a Fat Girl to keep him company - so I ordered another today....😨😨 Can you do a video on your watering/fertilizing regime - it would be most helpful....thanks Candice.

The cuts you made, are those tips usable for propagation? Or would that require more of the hardwood part of the plant?
@candicescaudiciformcollection
Yes, those can be rooted. They won't have the same caudex as a plant from seed would, but they can eventually grow very large roots to give a nice look.

After pruning, do you fertilize? what kind of fertlizer do you use?
@candicescaudiciformcollection
@candicescaudiciformcollection 2 года назад
I fertilizer on my normal schedule even if I prune. I use either a balanced 20-20-20 or one with less Nitrogen (1st number) more of middle and last number. Right now I'm using Jacks fertilizer.

Do u water the plant after pruning
@candicescaudiciformcollection
@candicescaudiciformcollection 2 года назад
Yes, as long as it's actively growing in warm growing season. You can wait until you see leaf sprouts to water, if you want to be extra safe.

The comment about the sap being toxic is a bit frightening. Could you tell me more?
@candicescaudiciformcollection
I've been growing these for many years and have never had an issue. Just make sure and wash hands well if you are cutting it or a leaf breaks off etc. It only can hurt you if you eat it or rub sap in an open wound of yours. Many people have accidently had sap on fingers, fingers in mouth, and it tasted bitter but no issues after. Just avoid doing that. Some tribes in Africa cook this sap to a concentrate to make poison arrows.

Great video! Can you propagate with the cuttings?
@candicescaudiciformcollection
@candicescaudiciformcollection 2 года назад
Thanks! Yes you can. I wrap cut with plastic wrap for a week first, let it callous. Then plant in dry soil, wait for leaf growth to water. I'm going to experiment with a humidity dome over them on my next try.

Can you prune & bury caudex to make larger at same time?,
@candicescaudiciformcollection
I dont like to bury a caudex that has already been exposed to light. But you can definitely avoid lifting the caudex as it grows for as long as possible. You can fatten a caudex up pretty easily by just keeping it in very well draining soil and watering often in summer. They love water in hot weather. Well draining soil is key.

Mine are under a condo patio so they only get partial sunlight. If they were in a yard, I would put them in your normal sun conditions.
