Always jack it up about a 1/2 inch higher than you need to, install a temporary post and then let the jack down on the temporary. Never get under a deck (or a car!) that is only supported by a jack. They can kick out or collapse and kill you. A few others said this, but who knows how many posts people will read and this is important. Everything else you did, I really liked. Nice work.
@FixitAll

I know, but this deck supported also by steps and another post just 8 foot away. Deck will stay even if i remove jack, just will sink a couple inch down. Thank you.

OMG! Guys like this are the reason we need and thankfully have the US Department of Labor’s OSHA. This guy has more luck on his side than he does a skillfully executed plan. AND using a 2-piece lifting post on the jack - WTF! AND no shoring under the deck as it simply rests on the cobbled together lifting operation! This guy needs to buy a lottery ticket; he definitely has luck on his side. AND packing the soil in the footing hole with a hand size chunk of wood - really? A box of Kleenex would probably have more packing force than this after thought solution of a piece of wood! This video right here is the reason most home owners should call in a professional contractor!
@FixitAll

Agree with you. But, this deck supported by nearby post's and steps. So it not gonna fall completely on the ground in case of jack failure. Just will hang a little doun that normal level. Of course I will get more support is I need more to be safe.

@josephyang8236 3 года назад
@@paulepling When I did something similar in the past I used a couple of concrete deck footings (you can buy them for $5 each from home depot) and put up 4x4 columns underneath the temporary beam and tied them together with some 2x4's and 3" screws so this way I can't accidentally knock it out. This was done on a 300 sq ft deck elevated at 5' so definitely not tiny. It was very secure and safe to work underneath.
@Maniwasaki

dear, never rely on 1 jack alone. Always place a bigger bulkier item to carre the weight AFTER you have jacked it up. Just lift the jack 1cm higher than required, jam the big item under, then release jack pressure

Use a bottle jack, not a floor jack. Bottle jacks go up straight and floor jacks curve when going up causing it to buckle. Also, never use two pieces of wood to lift that weight. They can buckle and injure you. Make sure that 4x4 you’re using on that bottle jack is plumbed straight up and down.

@@DukeBiggsleya friend of mine passed away from being under a car when a jack slipped. Always always always use Jack stands. I use one even if I’m just swapping a tire real quick. Similarly with home repairs, a post jack or sturdy installed temporary posts that go to the ground are cheap enough.

Beautiful video, wonderful how to DIY with a great musical background. Just very nervous doing this without a secondary support system. It may be best to have two jacks - one a hydraulic floor jack as in your video, and one "old school" mechanical ratchet type that will not fail. If there is a collapse, it can be fatal. Just my two cents on this subject which I will do soon. Every alternate escape route on such a risky project is safety over and above everything else. Overall, I love this video. I’m planning to redo my porch that sagged. Maybe it’s because the footings were not installed or installed into the backfill, ( non settled soil), or some rot damage occurred. I’m in Michigan and will basically have to do this job but with footings 42” deep. I’m so tired of my gutters not draining because they slop the wrong way with the front of the porch lower than the end anchored to my house and I can totally notice it’s not level; turns out it’s 2 inches lower on a 4 foot level, porch is 6 feet wide. One thing I’m concerned about is if I jack up the porch will the shingles that meet the house get pinched or cracked. So I am asking a local company for an estimate and I plan to chat them up to better understand if the cost and their perceived worry point to me just doing the work myself. I already releveled my deck and it was simple. Just not attached to my house or possible to cause roof leaks and my supports are in the way so it’s gonna be tough if I want to dig the same hole.

Not for structural applications. Nails bend, screws sheer off

This deck supports and main beams are redwood or cedar. Don't build a deck with that stuff. It rots quickly. I see it all the time. Use pressure treated pine wood.
