Oh my goodness, People of Earth -- I am a little chatty and scattered for this video, so bear with me. I guess if you want stoic and informational only, you can always go elsewhere! I started out thinking, "I'll show how to do Juana's 1x1 selvedge!" and ended up talking about how I mark my cylinder, and also how I set up my rib pattern across the top of the cylinder / foot.
A PDF of Juana's 1x1 selvedge can be found on my blog:
www.crazymokes....
Here's the short crib notes version, for using a SOFT WEIGHT like I use:
Take out every other cylinder needle for a 1x1 rib.
Run waste yarn until all needles are knitting properly. Stop just before 3o'clock mark and cut a long tail (6-8")
Starting at 3o'clock, run 1 row of ravel cord, leaving a long tail at beginning and end of row.
Load in project yarn, and leave a long starting tail.
- tighten any stitches at 3o'clock that needs it, and drop soft weight in with all tails tucked under nice and taut
Start first row of project yarn, stopping in front.
Install ribber (with ribber IN WORK), and start loading the ribber needles by grabbing the bar of yarn in between the cylinder needles. Work around loading ribber needles until first row and first ribbed row is knit.
Reset counter, and knit your sock! That is IT, it's the easiest selvedge ever :) The ribber stays IN WORK the entire time. For an added bonus, hit the cuff with some steam to set the edge and prevent any ruffling when the cuff is stretched out.
If you do NOT use a soft weight like me, then cut even LONGER tails, and pull the tails down between your set up bonnet and the cylinder, so it hands down below the machine. Tie a loose loop knot and hang a small weight off of that. The point is, you want your tails snug and taut, not loose and flopping around. I mentioned that I would link to another video with this technique, but it was NOT for Juana's selvedge, it was a ribber going in/out video which is totally different than what I'm doing here.
BONUS MACI PIC (Maci is a very sweet doggo we're dog sitting over the holidays. Everyone in teh house is super excited to have Maci visit us except maybe the cats LOL):

Watching your videos again a few years after the panic and pressure of being a newbie. Just wanna say how especially instructive they were from the get-go (you helped me make my first csm sock gf) but i appreciate them more now that I really understand what you are teaching. Love the detail and explanation. And I especially appreciate how you understand us, your peeps, trying to learn something rather esoteric alone and doing what you do can to make us feel part of a community. THANK YOU Amy for making this how-to that's also a welcome-back pour moi at least.

What’s in your weight? How much does it weigh?

I am pretty sure my big weight is 3#, and I have one 10oz heel fork and 2 8oz heel forks (i don't know why i did that, but it works fine). I followed The Colorado Cranker's instructions for making soft weights. I used old socks to make the weights, just added the lead shot to a doubled over sock and wrapped yarn around it to close. After 8 months (when the lead shot started leaking out) I cranked out some covers for them. Candy's instructions are found here: www.thecoloradocranker.com/2013/08/0-0-1-771-4401-colorado-cranker-36-10.html

Hi, super helpful! Um - you don't by any chance remember the lovely yarn/color you used in the sock you showed at the beginning, around 3:00 that was green/blue/pink with white? Meanwhile, I can't wait to try this out :)

OMG! So glad I found your channel! You are a life saver. Great tips and tutorials. 🤗 I’ve had my Speedster for a week tomorrow and now that I’ve played around and made a tabbed sock, this video is all making so much sense. 😅 Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your very helpful video Amy. It is the first selvage that worked out for me! Can I just ask you how you removed your cotton string that you used just before you switched to your sock yarn? Is it supposed to just pull out after you have removed the finished sock from the machine? I had difficulty removing this string. Thanks again!

I pull up a loop on the opposite side of the where the cotton ends are going out, and yank that out slow and steady. It can be tricky! By pulling on the opposite end instead of one of the hanging ends it makes it a bit easier. Thank you for the nice compliments Jean!

@@amythesockmaker1105 Thanks Amy, I really appreciate your help and such a quick response. In the meantime time I had tried your process again and second time round worked a charm, I got that thread out no bother 😁 You have enabled me to finally get to grips with my rubber! I am over the moon and can really crank to full capacity on my machine now. I hope you do more videos! 😄
