I just figured out how to properly use DR boost mode, and actually don't mind the 2000 ISO now since you end up essentially overexposing everything - just use zebras for exposure, and bring everything back down in post. I just end up keeping the NDs out all the time as well, but don't need to go as crazy with them as I thought. Also, I absolutely didn't realize you could have more than the 3 customs on C4. Thank you for talking about this!

You've demonstrated the truth to the proposition, "If nerds ran the world, the planet would be a better place!"...and we'd have better photos & videos, too!😉 I will never buy a GH6 because I await the G9++++! But the GH6 has some goodies I'd use right away: add 4K 120fps video and photo mode, open gate video, handheld 100 meg high res, upgraded sensor to name a few. Panasonic needs to really step up to entice G9 users to upgrade from an already incredible camera The GH6 shows some of the possibilities that we G9 users hunger for. Maybe you could do a video focused of the ultimate photo centric Lumix that would call on all the Micro Four Nerds of the world to chime in with their dream camera wish list!

Hey Emily! :) What's your method for quickly switching between photo and video? I shoot hybrid weddings in New Zealand with GH6's and what I really want is to have video mode be manual focus by default and photo mode be autofocus. The only way I've figured out is to shoot VFR video which disables autofocus - almost a perfect solution except when I want audio! The only other way I've found (without switching focus modes or engaging focus clutches) is to use the AF + MF function but this doesn't work when continuous AF is on! A fix for this would litterally make this the perfect camera for me, maybe that and hitting the video record button in photo mode going into manual video settings! Any thoughts?

I did not know about the audio issue. I can’t believe nobody has mentioned this before. What are you using to punch in that sounds very useful. I use the digital zoom and the pixel for pixel on my GH5’s and my Mk2.

FYI incase you haven't learned it yet, in the GH6 under the CreativeVideo Combined set, If you change the all settings to the video camera icon instead of the still camera icon, you will solve you photosyle problem when switching from still photography to video and back! VLog for video and Cinelike-D2 in photo and It will keep all your settrings for each respectively. ISO, SS and Apeture as well!

Great video! Regarding the audio level issue, I love my Rode VideoMicNTG, as you can choose either to have stereo, or two mono channels with different gains, so if one peaks you have a backup at a lower gain, just as you mentioned you'd like. Fantastic feature, and I love that mic. I always find it strange that nobody else seems to have ever used them haha

great video Emily, I got some points: - The 4 audio track is actually a good Idea, I don't like either the 4 channels of audio I get every time I record, I wish you could disable at least 2 of them. - 3:40 when shooting in open gate what I do is, I set a certain frame marker (16:9) and turn on the Grid of the camera to frame for the 9:16 aspect ratio, its ALMOST like having to frame markers. - while using my monitors (Shinobi, Ninja v+ ) I wish you could have to settings display of the GH6 on the LCD of the camera and have the live view show up on the monitor, like a dual monitor setup would work.

Can you set gh6 C1-C4 without any white balance? WB should be independent, when you go through c1-c4, otherwise, it is easier for me to use just regular video mode with custom buttons

Oh Gosh, you have to change the wheel dial to adjust ISO, my favourite. Love changing audio button to the audio levels, I don’t think of that, love that, saves me a button.

I went from the G9 to GH6 and I can't believe how much I am enjoying the experience

I hate that it doesn't have 20x digital zoom for manual focus in photography, now only a measly 6x

Nice tips, game changer was when i upgraded from G80 to G9 and set wheel dialo to ISO settings. I don't find it to accidentally knock it to 10000 ISO :). How do you like GH6 for photos, especially weddings. Or is S5 so much better?

omg, so i'm an S5 user, but i was just going between video and photo keeping it in vlog, and then when it came to photos, i'm like "why you make me do so much work!?" it never occurred to me! so ok yeah, cinelike-D it is for photos!

Customisation works if you operate the camera primarily in a single mode. If you use the camera for stills and video interchangeably, you'll need a really good memory if you heavily customise buttons. Lumix cameras store stills and video preferences separately, which avoids delving into menus. Making the same button perform different functions in video and stills would be too much for my brain!

Re: Silent Mode. The LED lighting at the music venue where I am house photographer can leave horizontal banding. Using a shutter speed of 160 seems to control it, but really I try not to use it even though I would like to use it during all concerts. Do you have any advise to avoid the banding when going silent?

Hiya Em..... Just wondering have you had the problem when using 4k@120 the line running from left to right near the bottom of the screen? I've seen a few RU-vid posts with this problem using the GH6 in 4k@120.

Hey Emily! Have you had any issues with the high contrast streaking that some reviewers (Gerald Undone, DP Journey, etc) have talked about? I've shot on the GH family since the GH3 and would love to grab a GH6 but a lot of my work is real estate and wedding video, where I need to be able to shoot into a window (dark room with a sun-facing window or dress hanging in a window) without having weird artifacts show up. It seems like some people find it happening all the time and others not at all...

What brand of batteries do you use on your GH6? Do you recommend the original Panasonic battery? What about other brands like KingMa or Wasabi?

Hi Emily, you should consider Haida PROII CPL-VND 3-7 Stops which will be released very soon, it might be a life changer for you especially when you need to shoot in bright conditions and with higher isos on that situation.

Hey Emily, Im stuck with choosing the right camera. Maybe you could share your thougts. Currently im shooting video with the Sony A7C and the Tamron 20-40mm 2.8. I mainly use my camera for video. And the A7Cs stabilisation is a nightmare. Especiall coming fron the G9. And no 4k 60p, which is important to me. Since I switched I always missed my Panasonic. So in not sure if I want to go MFT again or get the S5. But the L mount is so limited. I mostly shoot 4k 60p (if my cam allows me) and with the 1.5 crop Im limited indoors. On Sony there are a couple of 16-35 or 17-28. But the Panasonic equivalent seems to be expensive and slow. So... Keep the A7C and missing stab and 4k 60p or getting the S5 and film at 30mm(kitlens). Or go back to the G9/GH5/GH6. Im aware of the S5ii but I was fine with the G9 AF, so I will be with the S5M1. Due to the S5ii hype.I expect the S5M1 to drop in price soon. The MFT bodies do not have all these limitations, but since I used full frame already Im worried about how I and MFT will fit together again. (indoor light). Any thoughts on this for a father trying to film his hyperactive 3yo?

Can you do a walkthrough on how to setup a project to deliver both vert & horizontal video? I want to start using open gate but how do I go about it in FCP? Do I duplicate the project and use smart conform or do I need to create a whole vert project? thanks!

Arg I hate that the tap to focus function on the screen doesn’t work the same as the gh5. Use it all the time on a gimbal, now you have to tap that little af virtual button. Hope they can bring it back to just tap where you want to focus!

This is one of my fave nerdy episodes this year, and I will most definitely be watching this many, many times to steal some of your settings. First off my brain exploded trying to figure out a way to get rid of the four audio channels that the GH6 produced. However the Atomos Ninja V does the same thing. 🤣 As for the front record button, the one which you use for Night Time mode, I disabled it practically from day one. I use my Custom settings similar but slightly different to you. Custom Settings: C1 has everything I need to film 25fps ( v-log, MOV, 4k 422/10-all intra, ISO 400, WB custom, Shutter rule set to 180) The WB custom will always revert to the last manual setting C2 has everything I need to film 50fps (Same as above though ISO 800) C3 has everything for 120fps (Same as above though ISO 1,000) C4 has Open Gate 25fps for my anamorphic lens (v-log, MOV, 5.8k 420/10-all intra,WB custom, Shutter 180 rule) Long story short, C1 has all my wants and needs for filming and the other three dials are ever so slightly tweaked for 50fps,120fps and Open Gate for anamorphic. All Custom Dials have the exact same foundations, of wave form focus peeking, and such like to keep everything uniform. I realise that you have all this programmed into your C4 dial and you drill through your menu to get what you want, however I just have to spin the dial and I can go from taking photos in Aperture Priority to filming with my desired settings at the spin of a dial. I find this incredibly fast to achieve and allows me to go from a camera colour profile to filming in v-log and back again in under a second. I learned this technique from a youtube setting up my GH5. I just adapted those settings to my GH6. I genuinely am going to steal some of your other settings and buttons to add to my camera setup. 😀
