How i shoot the streets - Street Photography in London

it's only very recently that I've become very interested in street photography! Other than random snaps when travelling it's not something id given much thought to, although id always admired the art and skill needed!
After my last trip to London when I managed to do a bit of street photography before meeting a client, I was super keen to get back to continuing where I'd left off..!!
This vlog isn't meant as a how-to-do street photography obviously as I’m super new to it myself, but i thought id share a little behind the scenes as to the approach I take and how I shoot street photography! - And yes I love black and white for street photography haha..
I am always looking to improve and develop my photography so if there are any pointers you'd like to share then please feel free to do so in the comments or message me if you like :-)

Gareth, you really have got an eye for street photography. The images in Tate Modern are something else, you get architectural images that become of the street style once a person is included in the frame, really very good. The bonus image was hilarious, I’m surprised you found to paint that and get out and shoot so much in one day, you’re EPIC! It just doesn’t get any better than this 😬

Brilliant mate, loved it, what a superb video! Personally I bloody hate London (regardless of what Samuel Johnson says), all those years working in the square mile and Canary Wharf I suppose but now I don't have to go because I can just kick back and watch you killing it on the streets. Hard to choose a favourite image out of that lot but I can honestly say there wasn't one that I didn't like. I guess if you pushed me it would have to be the one of St Paul's with the guy sitting next to the steps leading upwards. I reckon this might be my favourite photography video of 2018, I think it was that good.

All cool photos! The guy just sitting there by himself relaxing is my favorite. The tones in the building really came out superb, which I don't know anything about as to how to achieve that. But, I find it all fascinating! Your videos are really helpful to understanding photography!!!

Yeah for me it's getting there with all my gear, I don't drive, just ride a motorbike, so if I go on a train, I might as well go somewhere huge lol. Look forward to future uploads!

First, to state the obvious, you've got a tremendous eye for this. There are so many RU-vid videos like this that are entertaining but where the actual photos are just mundane. More specifically, I appreciate how you incorporate pedestrians into your work without having to obnoxiously intrude into their space. And the fact you also shoot Fuji is just a bonus. I look forward to more.

They are mate only on public property not in underground’s etc but you will need to stand holding it incase someone falls over it. You’ll be in super trouble. I use a joby for that reason

Guy sitting on his own is a superb shot. The use of B&W stops the crowds on millenium bridge from being too distracting as well as being great when light super contrasty ... Can’t believe it. I was there on Saturday, doing street for the first time. Did most of the same places. Rarely go up to the city so was amazing to see all the places I’d just visited. Your images are way better than mine.

Thats some awesome pictures! Really inspiring to get out there with the camera. Would be nice to se a very fast, short clip with the pictures that don´t get into the video or maybe just a counter with how many shoots it takes to get one of the fantastic pictures that are in your video.

Loved the video, I went there back in August but when I got inside the Tate with no exaggeration it looked like there was about eight coach loads of Chinese tourists all in groups of about forty people lining up like soldiers on parade. I waited for about thirty minutes before giving up and moving on. Nice to see what I missed.😀

Too hard to choose a favourite! Only found your channel today but honestly, it’s already my favourite! I’ve just got back into photography but I really love shooting street/candid. Great shots and it's great to see non run and gun street photography (I've just watched some street photography YT vids in Manchester and they un-inspired me as it's different to what I'm looking to capture). It's cool to see that you're consciously looking for uh... street art stuff? (I mean stuff like lines, light, contrast, colour, punctum, framing, layering, balance, spacing elements, parallax etc etc) and then waiting for the moment to bring it all together. I've not shot street photography for years but am heading out to Manchester tomorrow to get my head back in to it; and if I'm really lucky get in to flow and actually see some moments to get excited about. Your videos have helped warm up my brain in the right direction and get it inspired again, so thank you and hopefully I'll at least get one half decent shot. :D

Yea I tried Llanelli on a Thursday as the tiny street market is there. Every time I stopped and raised my camera to my eye I could actually feel everyone looking at me. Lol. I think it may take me longer to release that blog than I thought.

really liked the child and his reflection on the wall in the Tate. I have to ask, since I'm from the US and was just there last week, where did you park your car and did you ride the tube into the area? That's what I would have done, London is crazy with traffic.

Great vlog mate... I live in a London and love street photography here. I’m so lucky in so many ways being here and I always end up trying to landscapes... crazy really. Hi Gareth! I really enjoyed watching your vlog sat here having my Beans on Toast! I have visited The Tate Modern myself it really is an iconic building and you created some stunning images there, I would say my fave image out of all is the second one in there where the couple are walking through the large bright square, it's awesome! You captured so many images with impact it is hard to pick just one. The ones with people are especially good. And the architectural images. The one that stands out is the stairwell, the dark arch of the stairs lofting to the upper left corner. Simple, with impact.

Amazing work. It's videos like this that show that I have much work to do on spotting compositions. It was a bit like "what is he even looking at?", then when the actual photo comes up it's like "wow. YES." Great stuff. T

@@GarethDanks I think it was like St Paul's reflection... because the gopro is a lot wider than the shot itself, I was just wondering where the composition was. But when it punched in to where you were actually looking, I was like wow!! I think this is really useful, as it gives us an insight of how you're picking out these opportunities, when the average person doesn't even notice them. Absolutely loving your work. Thanks again.

Wow! You’re photos are amazing and no inspiring! I’ve just started as a photographer and just been photographing my nephews and dogs lol the hardest to start with ay lol but the most fun I think. I’d like to venture out on to the streets too so I can gain some experience there and hopefully it will help me pick out ur detailing in places. Plus gives me something to do when I’ve got no ‘models’ lol

It can be a long day when your looking for the right shot. Get yourself a cycle it helps a lot. When I did my birmingham photo video I used the bike and got all the locations within like 2 hours.

Great images Gareth. Rather inspiring actually. Sub from me. Random question for you. I am getting back into photography and am at the stage, got the gear, no idea (ish) and was wondering why you chose f5.6 in your image of st Pauls at 9:02. Would F8 or f11 for this image have created the same DOF. (i know f11 has a greater dof however the people in the foreground are sharp at f5.6) I guess i have answered my own question. Trial and error. Keep up the great work and look forward to more videos.
