Love that your spending more time on showing us the process. Affirms some of what I'm already doing and gives me ideas for new and better things to try.
Yeah, read Amazon reviews.. Way too many Quality issues. I got excited as well, it's what i've been looking for a while now. But i'm not gonna waste my money on half baked product.
Thank you Kai. The how-to videos is how I found you on DRTV and I must say I really miss them. I hope that you start doing more of these! The product show-off videos are great an all but this ... this is what I come for!
Good lesson for a person at any level of video production. Organization and back up are key. I've been in video production for over 35 years and I still have to remind myself some times.
Hi Kai, I bought 2 of those WD passport wireless pro 4TB since I watched your video. You can tell your sponsor that their ad was well placed. Very useful product indeed. Quickly backup all my photos and videos on the go.
Kai if you decide tomorrow you want to start vlogging about something else entirely - I dunno, like flavours of crisps or literally anything at all - we’ll still all watch. What a dude! Awesome content and so glad you set up on your own after DR. Awesome channel 🎥😊
A sponsored video that actually works ? That WD Passport thing is really handy for when i go on short 4 day long weekend trips abroad. Seeing as my normal " go to backup" device is my laptop, not having to carry that would be benificial. Especially since i dont need to use the laptop for on the-go editing which i never do on these short trips. I will be picking one up ! Nice job Kai !
Backups are so important, good example of backup setup. I’m in the process of putting in place a backup system for all my footage. Then hopefully I will be able to sleep easy at night
I always say informal learning is the best way to learn the basics, and i learned a lot about photography and even filming from you, lok and digitalrevtv, for free aswell. Thank you
A Raid 1, 5, 6, or 10 NAS is a VERY useful tool. More people should buy/build one. I built my own 6x4TB Raid6 FreeNAS box with 32GB of ECC RAM. It's so nice being able to access my files across my network or over the internet. PLEX is handy too.
Labeling the batteries is so simple, why I haven’t considered this before 😉. Great video, hope videos of this style will pop up on your channel more often 👍
...not going to lie, I'd love to see a collab with you and Pete McKinnon! Talk about epic cinematography! You two are my favorite on the platform (and beyond youtube to be honest!)
great video, this is so much better than they guy in digitalrev teaching people how to vlog in their recent release. They totally don't deserve their 1.8M subscribers, you and Lok earned it for them. Continue with your great job Kai!
Fantastic video! Nice to see someone as paranoid about backups as me. I also make sure I have an offsite backup in case of disaster. Henry Kissinger said it: "Even the paranoid have enemies". Cheers, and Happy New Year!
Great tip about numbering batteries! I take it a step further and label "Battery 1 of " and then the total number. For example, if I have 5 batteries, I'd label the first "Battery 1 of 5." That way if I'm shooting with an assistant or helper we both know how much total battery time we have left at a glance. YMMV of course.
Chase Jarvis did a really good video on his workflow and backup setup some years back. Over the years I have used a modified version of his setup as the baseline that I recommend to all clients and friends. Not everyone can afford what he has setup, but if you work with any kind of data in the field (doesn't just have to be video or photo), you need a field as well as an office backup workflow/solution.
yep losing any data is a pain , even boring video makers like me suffer that , now to get some money together for a massive raid box and wifi backup.....love the video Kai thanks for the tips
My Canon .. no chance of putting the battery in the wrong way around, but my Fuji street camera 50% chance if you're focussing more on the subject & composition than being technical ... Fuji really need to do something about this 'feature' of the batteries! ;) lol
Uncaged If printing labels instead of writing on plain ones makes me a knob jockey, then I will proudly ride on, embracing the gay, knowing satisfyingly, that my labels are neat and uniform. Who’s with me?
Good sponsored video, plenty of screen time for the products/brand while not overtaking the message or goal of the video itself. Enjoyable/entertaining and at times informative, good stuff all around. Comments seem to agree as well, which is a rare sight when it comes to sponsored material.
Awesome video as always, Kai W. You are one of my RU-vid mancrushes. May I ask you how long it takes for you to prep, shoot, and edit your videos? I'm always stunned by the quality of your videos and how effortless you make it appear, not to mention the diligent regularity of your uploads.
Phew. Glad it's not just me that label's batteries and other stuff! Good advice Kai. The only question is; how many hard drives do you need?...the answer is; never enough!
This is clearly a more professional side of Kai. Very well done mate. I am pretty sure your OCD helps also in managing your adult video collections. Happy NYE 2018 happy 😊
I love seeing behind the scenes stuff to learn about workflows and hopefully improve my own but that I got kinda confused following it. Why do you backup the Passport to your NAS, but then use the cards directly into your editor? Do you not move your footage onto a SSD or something to do your actual editing work? Also do you do all the folder management and organizing on the card before you insert it into the Passport? Otherwise wont it backup the files in the wrong folders? You said you sort by Year Month Project Camera but do you have your GH5 already doing all that or when does that happen?
I don't get the WD Passport (as a backup). You should rather use the second SD card as the backup, because the writing errors or failure during camera operation is more likely than the SD card breaking afterwards.
It would work for me, I guess. My G7 only has one SD card. Not sure what I would do with a CF card (from my D800) though; doesn't look like the Passport has an easy way to support it.
Yes but he's willing to risk it for the sake of more card space. He can always go back and re-shoot the B-Roll. He's trading having to use two cards with the the same footage for the ability to capture more B-Roll footage and thus have more B-Roll to choose from. Most cameras report card read/write errors pretty quickly during use - usually followed by a "repairing data" message. Backup card might be better when you have a relatively short amount of shooting time to get-it-right-in-one-shot-or-lose-it footage.
