The intro of this vid is a little weird, it was the tail end of a mini-travel series I was doing and ended up at home at the end, and this was just meant to be more of a filler episode. This is the first half of my journey, the second half starts when the videos pick up at the beginning of my channel. Maybe I'll make an in-depth Part 2 about the struggles of a budding mural artist trying to make it in LA. Thanks for watching :)
being an artist is not a decision, it is more like a problem that you have to make the best out of it. that moment you said "i need a wall, because i HAVE TO PAINT" feels so familiar to me. really cool story until now. and your first mural was genius - wow, what happened before the first mural?
@@Kiptoe I've taken that same Baranquilla to Santa Marta bus back to Baranquilla flight to Medellin. If you ever go back there's a skatepark between Medellin and Sabaneta thats a killer spot visible off the road. Worth checking out I'm sure if you're linking up there's a lotta hype on the barrio hills stuff along transit, just thought I'd throw that out there, Sabaneta in last few years is coming up, lots of building etc. I can't wait to get back there working on startup and I was so blessed every leg of that visit, too profound just the warmest greatest people and families I've ever met anywhere it's something else. Thanks for the inspiration I'm about to do some sex changes on some tips I bought years ago get them to work on krylon and see if I can throw something down on a canvas totally new. Loved your skatepark job loved the way you pulled some areas out like the truck especially, great pallette and just popped.
Its sad they think painting over half a mural with grey is better than actual art. I could understand maybe if it was graffiti or possibly gang related, but its clearly just art..
I think kiptoe is really underrated... i mean his art skills and imagination are just amazing to see and i think more people should see his videos to support him and get inspired
mad respect bro... i always wondered who painted that mural in providence of super boy grew up over there n its nice to know the history behinde that peice providence has such a unique style where everything is so diffrent that it fits together perfect if that makes any sense lol.. n your style definitely compliments it.. thanks for yhe quick history lessons
beautiful story man. me and my guy just went around town asking people if they want a free mural. worked. its interesting to see how artist grinded it out and got started
Being a professional artist is a hustle!!! People think that if you can make beautiful art, that's it... you're gonna be famous LOL!! HA... It's Anything but that simple & easy! I know of, & have seen far too many extremely talented people not make it, b/c they weren't good w/ the hustle/grind & straight up business side of it! This is Entrepreneurship at its finest.. The term "STARVING ARTIST" is a well-known term for a reason..... I've struggled for many years to make it my sole-proffesion... I'm still struggling! And having serious health problems has robbed me of at least a decade! It's No cakewalk! There're NO (very few if any) Handouts in life! *Talent is unfortunately only a small percentage of the Art Game! And... It's very true that some people get lucky and rock a simple & recognizable character or logo & BOOOOM.. they get mad famous!!..HOWEVER; They still put their work on blast! They put it in everyone's face!!! Gotta' get it seen! The internet is such an amazing tool for that... But.... *** Talent + Handwork + Hustle/Grindin' = Career in Art... Sometimes anyway.. lol.. Much love! Great video! - @seamo_one
Been a fan for the last year. Your videos are inspiring to me. Because I'm an Artist/Dish Washer slinging art at comic cons. Thanks man! Found your videos when I needed to get back on my game.
ma boi back at it again with another dope mur... oh wait is just a story... hahahaha jk man loved the video, keep up the good work. No one starts from the top.
yo dude I'm from Portsmouth NH and there are quite a few stickers around my town! you have been a huge inspiration for me! I am currently painting my second mural at my school but my first one was at skatepark in Dover NH about a year and a half. I know you probably get a lot of requests but if I Snapchat you would you respond? Thank you so much keep up the hard work
I clicked this video really fast when I saw a familiar boy in a cape. I live really close to your first mural and cannot help but stare and admire it every time I drive by it. It’ll be nice to drive by and know the artist for a change. Beautiful work! UPDATE: I drove past that mural I was speaking so fondly of and they painted the entire side of the building a depressing grey. The start of an incredible journey completely erased and disregarded. :(
Why are murals so scary to people its supposed to be beautiful but I guess its the size that's to much to take in usually pictures are small but big is like ok thats a lot to look at like a life size picture
Really cool. I'm a young artist myself and when I see stuff like this it gets me so pumped to create! Truly an inspiring story, keep up the great work :)
This has inspired me so much, I’ve always wanted to design custom shoes and design murals (I’m not old enough yet) but this makes me just want to go out there and draw
You're the first RU-vidr who I can truthfully say is inspiring me and your videos make me pretty happy and excited as well so thank you for everything you're doing, you're amazing!
Yeah bro, your journey and your stories are very inspirational...And it's good that you pursue it, as your passion in Arts. And as being an Artist, like a dream that sometimes is not easy to get it...Well, Congratulations and now you getting more Arts projects...Greetings from Canada 😊
Been traveling around Asia to paint in hostels and bars. Was getting real down about my progression until this video. Really look up to you! Thanks for your creativity!
I'm trying to paint my very first mural as we speak. 60' long and 30' high. But, not being able to get insured is stopping me from working on the building. How do you work around this? Or do you have insurance that allows you to travel and make art?
I've never really run into an insurance issue (yet) so I'm not sure how to get around that my man. Painter's insurance is like to most expensive insurance becuase youre high up and stuff, if you're getting paid for the mural try and work it into the budget if its stopping you from working
I'm actually having a hard time getting insured to paint. That's what's stopping me. The owners of the building want proof of me being insured before I get to start my mural. You mentioning that painters insurance is expensive makes 100% sense why these insurance places won't let me be under their plan. Even all my artist friends that paint murals and my friend that owns his own painting business are all weirded out by my situation. I've been telling friends that this Kiptoe guy and one of my other all-time favorite artist's David Choe never have to go through this. Like you say in your video though, "Don't take no for an answer.", I'm not going to let anything stop me from painting this mural. Thanks for your expertise and for getting back to me. You're helping me build my case here...lol. I've watched that New York mural with the roller and no ladders video about 20 times already. Even went out and bought the Mr. Long Arm.
I actually got it all figured out. grabbed some workers comp for a month and that was all they asked for in the end. The mural has been finished finally and it came out pretty damn good for my 1st one ever. Check it out @congerart on Instagram.
Hi Everyone!!! Your art is amazing!!! I feel so sorry for your unfortunate event back in Colombia...I am Guatemalan, and have great good Colombians friends, but as they say, unfortunately like in all Latinoamericana, You just can't be so naive. The word thing, is that no one advice you on the matter. Great respect for your art!!! R.S.M. Guatemala C.A.
Why are people hating so hard and calling cops...to places that are abandoned... you giving colour and life to it and beautiful art damn frustrating.... you should come down to CPT we got amazing wall artists here also....COLLAB
Wow I just came across this channel, I'm from Charlotte and I have been really trying to do this, but now I realize I just need to buy the paint and start doing more paintings. You are fucking amazing my dude. You deserve so many more subscribers. I hope this channel grows faster. You deserve it.
Cool video Bro Great Art Work I'm a Decent Artist not the Best just got my First gig for painting murals for this new mexican restaurant and I'm real nervous lol I paint with brushes I wish I could spray paint like you but it looks difficult lol any tips on sketching murals and what type of paints to use 🙏👍✍😊🤩✅✌
Fucken sick bro. I was part of a Graf crew for quite some years called "Lords crew" I'm also from Cali. You have some awesome unique talent brotha. Keep pushing those images in your head. It's always awesome to see dope talent like yours
WOW, MIND BLOWN....great work! I started noticing murals everywhere in Louisville KY around 2017. Seems like I'm connected to a mural collective even though I'm a performing artist and have no clue how to make a mural. :) I must be telepathically communicating with you awesome sauce muralists. I'm trying to create a film that showcases muralists around the country. Are you interested Kiptoe? Hope we run into each other on this weird journey called life!
Love this video man. Honestly, I found you channel like 2 months ago and I love you style and your so humble man. good things have already come! Awesome to see your story. If interested check my page im an artist too trying to do larger projects. Definitely inspiring to someone who is trying to walk in your foot steps :D
Totally right approach, just claim the spots, normalise the art! I really envy streetartists, it doesn't carry the same stigma as graffiti. As long as you paint smart spots the worst that can happen is a fine for that particular mural, compared to people seeing you as a "tagger" and cops trying to pin a whole history of illegal works on you :( Good quality regardless of artform, in a nice spot isn't a crime - it's a service to society! :D
I clicked on this video because I had seen the mural in Providence, as my dad drove me through the area. Even though I saw it a month ago I recognized it immediately. Truly amazing artwork!
It's SO stupid..."law?"!!! "LAW?"!!! "LAW?"!!! So many f**king "laws?" that serve no purpose whatsoever! That's not even graffiti! That's ART! Tagging isn't really that attractive, unless it's done well, with thought and design and inspiration and not associated with criminal gangs. Your art is amazing!
hi Dude... I admire your sprit ….Its cool that you make something out of nothing really … like what is said in spiderman get by on your own steam ,,,,,, great man .
Brahh! nice paintings man, I had the same epiphany a while ago when I JUST HAD to have some paper to draw on, killing the art on paper ever since, and a few years back I was like MAN I NEED TO START PAINTING DIGITAL ART so I grabbed an ipad pro that is now like an extension of my being, I AM also getting uber inspired by mural art after seeing you and @tenhundred doing mural art, keep it up yo
Love this video! i am a full time muralist and have begun making videos over that last year and started tapping into this type of breakdown as well. you did a great job! nice angle!
I just came accross this vid in the suggested ones. I just want to say I like your attitude very much and I felt very understood when you said you thought that first big mural of super boy was going to blow up and nothing happened "it doesn't work like that" ajakjkkjaj truuuuuu Also your skills are AMAZING ive already suscribed. Hope I can get as good as you some day or make some collab (yeah I'm ambitious)
dear kiptoe, Please post more videos. I rarely watch tv, watch very few youtube channels and your stuff is DOPE. Your videos help keep my minds creative waves keep flowing. You da man. Thanks, from everyone
Kiptoe! Have you tried coating some of your murals with Master Clear Supreme clear coat? Disney World uses it here in Florida to keep their whole park looking new. I use it on my art, faux, and gel-stained front entry doors. Some said you can also use latex enamel deep base without tint or shade....I haven't tried that yet.
Love the video. It seems like not enough people post videos on what they learned after painting murals, or what to expect videos. Do you have any tips on specific paints to use, spray paints included? I'm currently working on my first mural, and I'm using house paint... So far, it's okay.
5 years later and I'm just watching this? I'm so far behind! Great story, very inspirational and you've come a long way. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on doing what you love. We were almost neighbors! I live in Maine.
Hey Kiptoe, what is your fees for painting a Mural? Slightly smaller than your first Super boy Mural. It's a parti-wall of a shop house in Singapore, that will be turn into an "Instagram wall". Will you be interested?
Great story. It’s always impressing how you Americans are just doing what is coming up your mind right now and enjoying it and being successful with it. I’m from Germany and most people here only focus on their career and things like that what is not bad but sometimes very boring. I really like your paintings and I hope you will go far with what you’re doing :)
Hi all! Was just curious , what's everybody doing that's getting them mural clients? Any marketing or advertising that works? Concentrate on homes or businesses? Thanks alot in advance 😇
Quite inspiring. True struggle for your truth, and BAM, you got a Kiptoe like he wasn't before =] I love street art, I don't do it myself but every single time I see one out there, anywhere I am, I take the time to look at it and savor it (yeah, hopefully and usually there is something to savor :) Those art are like anything else that will do this : take you out of this world for a second. And boy do we need to to get out of this boring, sad square looking concrete with washed up stained of acid rain or some crap like that from time to time. It's easier to relatively identify ourselves with an art of such then a letter graffiti which are most of time unreadable, those art we can easily read, but I personally still like graffiti anyway :) Hope the best for your career and thanks for sharing. Also, the video itself was nice, I like the editing.
Did you ever had bad experience with the police? I am living in Germany and I am really sick of those fucking strict officers here... anyway there is not even a "graffiti or mural scene" it's pretty boring😖
