How I store and protect my oil pastel artwork

In this video I show a way to protect and store your oil pastel artwork for long term storage. This is for OP artwork that I do on paper. I use glassine paper (kinda like wax paper), which is applied directly to the finished artwork surface. Then I'm able to stack the art on top of each other or vertically and place in a cupboard . (someplace dry and away from sunlight). Glassine paper can be bought by the roll on amazon or even your local art store.
Video is about 18 minutes long.

Wonderful informative video, Rich. I'll be buying some glassine paper, for sure. I also use pastelmat but for pastel pencil applications. I think that surface might eat my neopastels too quickly! Yet, I'll give it a try after seeing your success. Was looking at Sennelier fixative but so so expensive. Was wondering if you've tried Dorland's Wax? Again, an expensive initial outlay but goes a long way and protects watercolour and gouache too! A bonus all-rounder and can be used in home without the need for dry and temperate weather that sprays need. My country is cold and wet 8 months of the year! I just searched youtube and no one seems to have tried it on oil pastels as far as I can see. Just a suggestion. I'm considering buying a pot. Love your channel! You should have way many more subscribers. Thank you! 😊

What fixative did you use for that gorgeous landscape from 2017?

This is so helpful! I'm not sure if I should buy oil pastels because it never dries! But this video opens possibilities. Thank you so much!

It would be cool if you did a RU-vid short of the painting you did with fixative and varnish👍🏾

I could do that. I have a few panels that are ready to go.

So happy I found your RU-vid site! You are very knowledgeable and a great artist. Wonder why the art don’t framed or sold? Are they personal art? I was also wondering why would who so some with fixative and not others? Is there a reason? Btw just learning about oil pastels and fixative. Do you ever use movable fixative (forgot name lol

Hi and Thank you! I can't afford to frame and hang up everything I paint. What you see in the cupboard represents maybe half of all my work. I have sold many, given away some and keep some for personal reasons. I used to apply final fixative to everything I painted whether that be on paper, wood, hard panel, canvas...After doing this hundreds of times, I came to the realization that I prefer my artwork on paper to be left alone without using a fixative. So for the last 8 months or so, I'm not using a final fixative on works that I have done on paper. I'm not sure about movable fixative. I've never heard of that. I do use a workable fixative in between layers if I need. And only using a final fixative on works created on hardboard or wood.

What about framing? Do you need glass if you spray fixative? Someone was using a varnish. How do you show your work? It's gorgeous.

Is there a reason why you don’t put fixative on some of your oil pastels artwork?
@raizes
@raizes 11 месяцев назад
That’s a good question. I think for the most part I like the surface of oil pastels to be untouched. The up close look of the delicacy of the little particles is attractive to me. Sometimes I feel that a fixative or varnish is like applying a wet blanket to it all. It’s not bad , but maybe a preference for me to just leave the oil pastel as is.
