How I Studied Other FPS Games To Make My Game Fun

I’ve been working on this game in Unreal Engine 5 for the last couple of months. It is far from finished but I’m pretty happy with the results so far. I have done the majority of the logic in C++, the 3D models in Blender and materials in Substance painter. In this video we’ll start taking a look at how I created this, how I structure my workflows and what my plans are for this game.
I like to describe the game as a fast paced trick shooter. Taking inspiration from games that I love like Titanfall and Apex for movement. And also Roller Drome for it’s quick shooting events. And mirrors edge for the clean esthetics.
It will be too much for me to go in depth on how I’ve implemented all of these features and defined my workflows all in one video. So I’m planning on making a devlog series for the project, and gradually show how I set things up and show of new features that I add to the game. So if you are interested please subscribe! Maybe add a score/combo system to fit more into the trick shooter and encourage the play style you want, kind of like call of juarez gunslinger the combo system is really satisfying. (Edit: damn c++?, u a stronger man than I am, I know it’s powerful but it’s just so confusing for me)

There will be a scoring and time system, but I need to work a bit more on the details. Haha C++ in Unreal is not too bad when you get used to it.

I love the concept of the game, I would love to have reload animation for making more damage just after reloading for exemple

So happy I stumbled upon your channel. I can't wait for more videos! I was wondering, did you use any sort of FPS framework for your shooter? And did you modify the CharacterMovementComponent to make your movement system or did you build on something like GMC?

No specific framework, only vanilla Unreal Engine classes. Yes, I use a movement component class that inherits from the default CharacterMovementComponent.

This is really exciting to see. Love the movement and the slow motion. Looks like there is a very nice balance of fluidity without feeling hectic/chaotic. A lot of games that try this but they usually lean to the chaotic side of things. So for me, this is very refreshing and I think this will draw a lot of attention alone. I also appreciate that you share your thoughts and how you achieved certain elements of the game. Liked and Subbed! Keep up the good work! Questions: I am curious on your thoughts about recoil and if you consider making it more difficult to hit targets while moving ( similar to CS ) This might change up the feel of the game too much but a subtle shift to the spray pattern could be interesting to master while in motion. Maybe the slow motion perk alleviates this? You are probably way ahead of this question but just for my own curiosity sake. Are you the sole artist and designer? Love the direction of the visuals already, can definitely see the influence from Mirrors Edge and I am here for it!

Thanks! Yes, my thinking here is that there is already so much chaos while running around, so the slow motion (and soon timed events) will give the player some breathing room and time to plan the next move. I have been experimenting a bit with various recoil variations, and the slow motion will have an impact on the recoil in the future. However, the slowmo event will affect different weapons in different ways. Yup, I've done all of it solo, except for the trees. They are some marketplace asset.

Awesome. Liked and Subbed. That game rly has potential. And keep up the progress. There are some things tho i would critisize, even though u r in dev, and prob alrdy had in mind to include those. 1. if i were u, i would do the targeting sys of the enemies so, that if u stand still, they aim more acc and shoot better. 2. i dont like the static aiming and 24/7 const holding the gun. would be cool if u added an animation where ur hands are seperated for better movement, when u aim u get a bit slower and u use both hands when shooting. 3. i rly dont like the slowmo when aiming but that seems like the main game idea. 4. about the skins, its weird that they look real in combi with the smg's colour. Nice game. More videos and info about how u dev it.

Thanks, great feedback! I'm going to remake/update the enemy AI pretty soon. When you say skin, are you referring to the gloves that the player is wearing? I agree that texture might stick out a bit there atm.

Is there an opinion that Doom 3 is a masterpiece? Then John Carmack - chief programmer, not even a game designer leaves the company and id software can't make something mature and serious anymore. Comment. - what do you know about that? Maybe the genius left and stopped influencing the development????
