This “just ignore it” stuff also primes little girls for assault. It’s literally the same arguments. Got assaulted? What were you wearing? Getting bullied? What are you wearing? “Just tell them no!” Same thing there. Surely it’s something YOU’RE doing. I’m telling ya, we get girls convinced their suffering is their fault REAL early.

Ignore the guys making it about them. That's not what we're all like. Victims should stick together and validate each other instead of making it a contest. We need to have each others backs. And you're right, speaking as a victim myself, this "just ignore it" leaves victims vulnerable to predators and bullies. It's a serious issue we need to correct and pass on the knowledge to the future generations. So eventually it dies out. Be the change we want to see in others.

"Just ignore it" was the worst advice I got as a kid. That didn't result into the bullies getting bored, like the adults claimed, but the bullies getting more creative and also more aggressive. The attacks got worse because when "you don't achieve something in the first try, you try something else", right? To this day I don't know what I would say to my younger self. I have no advice because I still have no clue what would have stopped this nightmare. But what I learned is: "don't believe them. YOU are NOT the problem. And even when it doesn't feel like it now, but things will change. Keep your kindness, because some day there will be people who appreciate you for this " and at least for me, when school was over, this nightmare was over too.

I was luckily never bullied too much (except once when I created my YT channel, made the mistake to tell a handful of people at my school with the consequence of getting my RU-vid name shouted at me all day long; when that happened I went silent on YT for a year and everyone forgot me again because they had nothing to laugh at). But school itself was a nightmare for me back in Germany. Now I'm in Sweden and even like school.

I really relate to this, i was in EF that english lesson i use to love going there hanging with friends but after i graduated high flyers i was put into another class with different people at first they seem nice but their to guys. Lets call them L and Small L their brothers and they didnt seem much at first but as time past they started to say names to me. At first i thought its MY fault i dont get it (i thought it was a joke) but it more and more hurtfull i said to my parents that i was bullied and they say ignore it and when that didnt work i laugh at their comments but i cried in the end. the worst part is that the teacher was there didnt stop from hate speech plus my parents talk to EF they didnt do anything . And the class was small and open 10 students(me included). But in the end i graduated and when were taking a photo i gave the middle finger. And move to TBI they students were nice to me and sometimes abit funny.

Exactly. Maybe it would be decent advice for cowardly and utterly useless remarks, but things got stolen and others got involved. As a teacher, I try my best to stop name-calling (etc.) that happens in my classroom, but I know some of it flies under my radar because it's impossible to notice to everything. I'm pretty down to earth, and many of my students feel comfortable talking with me about all sorts of things, especially since I'm a young teacher. I hope they're comfortable enough to tell me about what's going on when life isn't going well for them. I would never want to sit by and do nothing when there's a serious issue going on, but knowing the reality of the situation is hard, especially when you're trying to be diplomatic. One thing's for sure though: telling a kid to "just ignore it" when they're being bullied is definitely wrong.

This is something everyone needs to learn, especially adults: ignoring doesn’t do shit. It makes it worse because it gives the false impression that bullying is okay, because no one does anything about it. I was bullied my entire life in public school, not an exaggeration, and it only stopped when I stood up for myself and told them to stop, and when I gained confidence out of spite. Then when I graduated high school I was free. I just wish I had the strength to do it sooner than the very end of school.

I was bullied a lot in school but it eventually got too far. This one kid had found out about my home life and sexuality so he used it to make rude jokes about me. He would say things like “You’re gay, you’re going to hell!” Or “she doesn’t know what a mom is!”. I was really upset because it was a constant thing and I was scared that no one would believe me about it. Thankfully, the nice administrators heard me and actually did something about it. But I had always been upset about the jokes because I felt like my mother’s absence was my fault and his joking about it didn’t help, which made me dread school. It’s much better now though :). Back in school I was bullied relentlessly for my red hair. Nobody will read this or care because I've said this on several places without an audience, as though they know and feel guilty or hear these things and think it was fine. The anti ginger thing became an international issue so I wasn't an odd stick in the pile for this one. There was a red haired solidarity happening, so these shared experiences led to lasting friendships. Some of the stuff that happened would get people in prison. I was thrown in to a fire, lit on fire, beaten at the back of the school and had my stuff taken, had my clothes torn off me to see if the curtains matched the carpet, secsually assaulted, pushed down stairs, smashed in to poles for no reason other than people thought I was subhuman and my existence was an offence to them. Each year there was this Kick a Ginger Day and EVERYONE GOT IN ON IT. The news asked if it was okay to violently target a group of people for their physical differences **as though that hasn't been a topic of contention in the world for the last two centuries**. The teachers told me it was my fault for having red hair and the internet told me it was fine because I was a white dude so it wasn't the same thing and it was funny and - oh look, this isolated red haired kid also thinks it's funny so that must be the universal truth among all red haired people. Why should the world act like it matters when the less than 1% of the population that has red hair has a grievance against the vast majority of people that don't and ensure that all red haired people are violently reminded of that because of a solid episode of South Park where the CREATORS DIDN'T EVEN APOLOGISE FOR WHAT THEY DID even knowing what it did to the world? The advice was to just let it happen because it's funny to everyone else, and the way I felt about it didn't matter at all because I didn't fit the demographic of an affected target. Oh, and people say that red haired girls are hot and that means my experiences don't matter because all that talk about anti ginger rhetoric wasn't actually about red haired people because the red haired girls being objectified for their physical differences was somehow meaningful to invalidating the topic. Some of those teachers laughed at me while they watched these things happen. There were some teachers I was on good terms with, but others took that unnecessary cruelty all the way to their position as individuals who are meant to be the responsible party among children in a societal microcosm. The times I fought back meant I was the one to get in to trouble but in my case, the bullying never stopped, as the other kids were bigger and stronger so my little munchkin fists never made a lasting impact. Muscle development was a rich kid thing, so I never had that opportunity to defend myself properly and make a lasting impact on the people that hurt me. Do you want to know why it all stopped? Some kid in the States was hospitalised by his bullies and took them to court for hate crimes and won. Which means the ONLY reason it stopped wasn't because people wanted to be compassionate. It was because nobody wanted to be known to have commenced or conducted a hate crime. It was more important to look accepting than it was to be accepting and that still annoys me to this day, and nobody wants to remember that part of recent history because it was a grim reminder that the only thing keeping us from tearing each other to piecesis the threat of liability or social acceptance.

@Whitney Dahlin the problem with this idea is that it punishes the bullied child instead of addressing the bullies behavior. You're homeschooling the kid who needs friends and a support system, thus cutting them off from all of those things, to what? Protect them? If you want to protect your kid from being bullied and the school isn't doing anything, then march your happy butt down to the school/district offices/school board meetings and make a fuss. Demand changes, don't just yank the victim out of school and expect the bullies will stop. They'll just find a new target, and nothing will get better until karma slaps them into next week. Not only that, but most of us these days can't lose one half of our household income so one of us can stay home to homeschool our kids. We have to work to cover the rising costs of living. This hit me hard. This was exactly my experience in middle school in the 80s, but with added physical violence. I'm angry about it to this day -- not nearly as much towards the bullies, but to the adults that let it happen. Not only would they ignore it, and tell you to, but they would penalize both the victim and perpetrator. They sent the message that authority figures were useless. The lesson I learned was that if someone hits you, forget the adults and hit back harder -- admittedly not a great takeaway, but occasionally it worked.

Public school teachers have failed students time and time again. When I was in 2nd grade I was heavily bullied as well. One time, my only friend turned against me on the playground and everyone else decided to tag along. All 15 or so kids ended up chasing me around, and when I stopped to ask a teacher to stop them, she just said “they’re just playing tag” and completely disregarded how I felt. Long story short: I ended up falling and having my first panic attack because of the way everyone stood above me in a circle. Thank goodness my mom is scary and talked some sense into the staff afterwards.

I am glad I was never really bullied, however I never had friends either, my class had one big group of people that would be together in the breaks. It was actually just some and the rest listened, not even being included, so sitting with them was yust like listening to a potcast you're not interested in. I don't know what else there was that messed me up, but I definitely bottled up emotions too, up to that point I either wouldn't feel anything or anger. I'm a lot better now and what I want to say is, you have to actually want to get better. It's very easy to stay the way you are and not make the effort to change your thinking and sometimes I unintetionally go back to the old way I used to think and ripping up the scars that already take a very long time to heal.

That is why the term "Snowflake" even exists. When you're sensitive enough that you cannot laugh at yourself is what gives the masses the power to bully you--and that's sad.

my sister was being bullied on kindergarten and my dad went to the teacher personally to complain about this and the teacher just shrugged it off saying thing like “oh, this kind of things happens in life, she has to learn how to deal with it”. I think in middle school especially the staff just have the mindset that "they're kids, they'll get over it" and "it's not that bad, they'll live", so they don't feel like they have to actually handle the situation until someone's parents show up and demand they adress it. Then they're saying they've been doing their best and the bullies are suddenly suspended. (This is what I've heard from so many people about middle school and even went through this myself... it's sad that this is so common.)
@LezzyBugO3O

Those types of people SHOULD NOT be in those positions. Unless people ACTUALLY CARE about children and their wellbeing, they should not become teachers or counselors. Kids are so impressionable especially during middle school years. So when people don't give their problems the attention or advice that it needs, they grow up thinking that their problems don't matter and even sometimes bottle them up to an unhealthy degree.

People need to learn to tell the difference between "just being a kid" and a kid being a little asshole. People base their behavior on everything they see. If an adult treats a situation as "not a big deal", it just enables bad behavior and encorages potentially worse behavior. I think this might be a case of overcorrecting the harsher punishments of past. As a result, this generation is overrun with giant entitled children.

I was bullied too through primary school (6-10 years old) and something that really annoyed me as I got older was adults trying to make me feel pity for the bullies. While it was true that the "head bully's" mother was a quite crappy person who put her through pressure I didn't think it justified her actions or make me resent any less. In my 13 year old mind, she was still a terrible person and I still wanted her to be locked in the school bathroom forever. What I'm trying to say is, no matter how crappy situation the bully has at home, I think we still deserve to be angry at them!

The adults who say “just ignore it” are really saying “I don’t care, I can’t be bothered to deal with it.” And leave a poor child wondering why they’re being targeted. I was never bullied, but my old friend was, and he was the kindest person you could ever know. Luckily, he still embraces himself to this day, and I know not every bullied kid can be like that. Victims can only take being bullied for so long before they eventually react. I very much recognize the issue of teachers brushing off anything you tell them about other children bullying you. I have heard the phrase 'just ignore it' too many times. It made me loose trust in teachers completely, it made me feel worthless. Worthless like I was an object that could be used by anybody else to take out any rage or frustration. As a former small, glass-wearing, nerdy kid, I had a bullseye for bullies on me. The proper and ONLY way to handle bullies is to show them that you're not to be fucked with. I'd answer back all the time, dig dirt on them, and laugh at their bad grades, telling them they'll be hobos or shovel garbage for a living as adults. Yes, I got beaten up a couple times, but I also punched and clawed when that happened. Eventually, they just move on to an easier target. What? No, there is no actual end to bullying. Yes, bullying is unstoppable. You don't have to end it, you just have to prevent it from happening to you, specifically. Someone else in my class got bullied into "35 and still living with parents, no job, no education", but it's not me. It's not me, and that is good enough, for me.

As someone who was bullied to the point where I wanted to end my life, I had to move three different schools, and eventually even dropped out because of how bad it was. "Just ignore it" was a phrase I heard way too often. The closest any adult came to offering decent words of wisdom was "they're just jealous of you". It still didn't help but it was a little better than "just ignore it." And I think the teachers found even less of a reason to help me because my bullies were younger than me and in their eyes "just kids". What gave me confidence again was my mom going off on the teachers when I finally told her what was going on. I think she might've actually considered going to jail that day.

I think a lot of times it had to escalate to a point of permanent damage and lawsuits before adults will take action. At my school in the 90s there was an incident where elementary schoolers would routinely pelt older students they deemed nerds (or other more offensive language because it was the 90s) with rocks as they crossed the playground to get to class. I was 16 and a goth kid so naturally I caught it once or twice and it was common to hold your bag over your face like a shield when you crossed the playground. Teachers would do nothing about it because "they're just little kids" and if you threatened them you were the one that got in trouble. 'just ignore them and they'll get board of it" was a frequent refrain. Well they didn't get bored of it and one day they threw rocks at a middle school girl and one of them hit the lens of her glasses and shattered it into her eye. She had permanent eye damage and the school had to settle out of court with her parents. Nobody threw to rocks on the playground after that or you got instantly expelled. It took litigation to get the staff to do their jobs which is really pathetic.

Telling kids to “just ignore it” is like telling a little girl “he’s just flirting with you” when a boy hits her or pulls her hair. It just teaches kids that being bullied is fine and they should just live with it. Words can’t describe how much I hate people who say shit like that. Like they’re grown adults, they should know better. Edit: I feel I should clarify that the “boy hits girl, adult says boy likes girl” thing actually happens. No, those boys and girls aren’t adults or anything, they’re usually young kids on the playground or something. Adults (except my mom) around me never did anything when I got bullied first grade and the grade before that. And they kept doing nothing until I graduated 9th grade, so whenever I got bullied I’d tell the counselor, who proceeded to always tell me “Just ignore it” or “He has a crush on you UwU He Just Likes You OwO UwU”. These things happen all over the world and it’s harmful. Edit 2: it’s not just boy fight girl, it can also be the other way around.

Sometimes I really want to say to that "Okay," and start hitting myself in front of the teacher. If they tell me to stop, I just say "Why? Just ignore me bullying myself. It's no harm, right? Everyone bullies me?" To let how basically hurting someone is damaging, and basically saying being hurt means there's no self worth for those who gets hurt. Even tho the world is cruel and people are people and will hurt you, that's why people are PAID to address inapproximate behaviours instead of saying "Eh, people are people." If people are people, and it's okay to hurt and bully people, then basically say it's hurt yourself is okay people should just let it pass.

(This is going to be a crazy rant) The Crystal type people were what I dealt with in elementary school, And I played on a youth basketball team, which had kids that would tease and bully me. So whenever I vented to my friends, who I thought were my friends, they would always say "well they're nice to me." So my lord, does it cut deep for me. Because sorry but people can have multiple sides and that person can be mean to others while being nice to you. Well, also, that entire idea of "Just ignoring it," I tried, I tried for years. I STILL try, but it just doesn't work. They will still continue even if you just ignore it. They want that satisfaction so they won't stop till they get it. Also, the just be friends with everyone. MY LORD, did it happen, and did I hate myself and life. I couldn't just be friends with everyone else. Sometimes, these school counclers need a reality check.

The sentence "Telling a kid to ignore the problem makes them feel like no one cares" cuts me like a knife. I was like Illy, bullied for everything, little to no friends. And when I tried to stop I was pushed aside because the teachers didn't care. They took the girls side in harassing me. When I told my mom what was going on, I was told to ignore the problem at hand. Now I don't want help from people that aren't me. If the people who are meant to protect you and help you don't do that, then who will.

I currently am in middle school myself, and I have a cat plushie that I take around with me to other classes, usually because of the possibility of a panic attack, and the cat calms me down. I get made fun of for it all the time, and when I tell an adult, they usually are just like "Then don't bring the cat" or, "just ignore it" but I hope they come to realize, that isn't how that works. And no, I will not stop taking the cat around with me because I do not want to be made fun of for having a panic attack in the middle of design class. God i feel this whole video in my soul. I was bullied for making friends with people that were bullied. My big empath heart made me gravitate to the "underdogs" and "outcasts." Made it worse that i was a bigger girl so there was 2 whammys. I also got the misunderstanding advice to ignore all the bullies. One day, i got so mad and with a wild hair of willpower, i stood up to everyone all day, in front of teachers as well, NOONE knew what to say and just stared at me bewildered. The power i felt was absolutely unmatched, and in the next few days i noticed people backed off and were actually being cordial! I still didnt like them, but was also cordial after that. It taught me that if you have a friendship that is honest and caring, you stand up for it no matter who likes who. I am still friends with my weirdos and have new amazing friendships with an amazing group. god imagine telling an adult to "just ignore it" to adults doing these exact things to adults in the workplace. Like... bro that's called workplace harassment. it has consequences, like separating you from the harasser, meetings, even getting fired if it keeps going (sometimes depends on the workplace but there are systems in place). You aren't allowed to just do that to other adults. I know I had gotten this "advice" and problem solving from the adults around me when it came to bullying. I bit the kid one day and I hadn't been bullied by them from that point on. Another school there was a different one and they stopped when my sibling actually stood up for me and scared the hell out of that kid. Adults didn't do anything and even a therapist at the time had told me to "just ignore them." It only showed me how children's issues aren't valued. And to ask them to have more emotional maturity and regulation (sometimes enduring physical bullying) than adults would ever accept themselves is just stupid as hell.

She'd turned out to be a stellar person, and it turns out what she'd done had bothered her for years. I hope my old classmates are happy, because what they did to me still lingers to this day.

"are you getting bullyed? Just ignore them!" This sentence has the same energy of: "are you homeless? Just buy a house!"

Its an agee old advice. If you are bullied hit back. Take any punishment if unavoidable. It's worth it since your bully knows you will fight back now and it won't be worth it. Bullies bully for fun whether they are abused at home or not. Its not your problem to understand them, only to protect yourself.

As a new teacher, this is really insightful. While I'd never give the "just ignore it" advice, I know that this is the go to for many colleagues. This video also reminded me how horrible people can be. I was picked on too, and it sucks. It's opened my eyes up to how malicious people can be and how horrednous school's can be fixing things. I'd never force bullies and victims to be friends. I would want to make the victim feel safe, and give the bullies the consequences they deserve.

Please do! I was bullied on my bullied by someone on my bus. They said "Just ignore it! I'll move him away" they never moved him. I was also denied mental health help from my teacher (The school counselor was who I needed)
