English teacher here: you were talking about plot structure. Most modern literature follows a basic 3 part plot structure--beginning, middle, and end. LIke "once upon a time..." "then one day..." "happily ever after." A character solves a problem, overcomes an obstacle, learns about themselves, etc. Think Star Wars. Sounds like what you were saying about ancient literature is that conflict isn't central to the story like modern stories. Stories and events are presented and repeated to show their importance instead of showing the importance of details through conflict.
I didn’t think incest was outlawed until Leviticus. There would not have been a genetic overload at this point so it wouldn’t have been unsafe, so I’m not sure that’s what the issue is with Ham seeing his dad
I had the same thought, but am thinking it had more to do with the fact that Noah was the head of the family. Laughing at him in his vulnerable position shows a lack of respect, which could have destroyed a family by destroying their respect for their leader.
In my study Bible, regarding mighty man in reference to Nimrod, they have it translated as "mighty hunter" in the KJV and it says this is hunter in regards to hunting men and not animals and that 'his exploits are of a moral and spiritual nature. "Mighty hunter" is from Gen 6:4 and his name relates to the word 'marad' meaning rebel. Thus Nimrod established a thoroughly autocratic, imperialistic, despotic system of government, back of which stands Satan in all his rage against God.' That's almost word for word out of my study Bible. Pretty interesting stuff when you pair it with the things you talked about! It goes on to explain that Nimrod committed his acts before the Lord, and what he did was significant and a matter of concern to God Himself. Great stuff! Thanks for doing this for us Faith!!
(Godstories here!) I've thought about that passage about Babel actually as God protecting man from himself. God knows the evil character of mankind. What happens to us - what kind of evil will we do to each other if there are no limits?
This was SOOO helpful! I use commentaries but I usually read the WHOLE commentary and take notes on EVERYTHING I find interesting. But I don't always have the time to do that so I like the idea of using the commentaries only when I have a question or need more context 😊😊
Thank you for this video!! I take notes in my Bible keeping in mind who might have my Bible in their hands next: will it be my unbelieving son and/or daughter? will it be one of my grandchildren? will it be one of the young ladies that I disciple? or maybe someone who shops Salvation Army? I want to pass on what the Lord has taught me through my Bibles to the next generation.
Hey, Faith! I recently got back into the word and studying it in depth. The Lord has so blessed me already, though it’s only been a week. I’m so grateful for your ministry and how much you make it evident that the WHOLE BIBLE can be, and is intended to be delighted in today. Have you ever considered just reading through the Bible, and taking however long it takes to read it? So rather than trying to read as much as you can to finish the reading plan, you would read however much you can until you have to move on for times sake. It’s what I’m doing right now and I love being able to dwell on certain verses that the Lord is revealing some deep truth through.
This is the video I was looking for as I started reading bible with your reading plan! Thank you so much Faith! It’s always encouraging and practical ❤️
Also maybe....they might eventually think more highly of themselves that they ought, or lean more on themselves, forgetting their need of God. Plus it reminds me of "setting up high places" where idol worship occurs.
This was so fruitful!! Thank you! I'm using Matthew's Commentary and enjoying a lot of incite but your resources...wow! I'm hoping my Pastor's office can lend me a few. He must have have half a dozen full sets of commentarys, now I understand why!!
If you haven't already explored it, the Blue Letter Bible (on-line) has quite a few commentaries in their STUDY section. My favorite is the Matthew Henry Commentary. They also have study tools that pop up when you search for verses or phrases. Dictionaries and more.
Thank you for this! Even just a small glimpse of this personal time has been very helpful. Now I need a bookcase behind me for my commentaries, study bibles, etc! I need stuff at my fingertips or it ain't happenin'!
I like how you said “that little treasure hunt.” That’s what I feel like I’m doing when I’m studying, particularly when I’m try to answer a question or clarify something. I believe it was a Bible project podcast I listened to not long ago, they briefly discussed Nimrod and how he was a hunter, and his name kind of became synonymous with the word. And because of the looney toons cartoon, the name in modern culture has sort of changed to an insult. Interesting how words change over time.
Thank you so very much for all of your videos, they are very helpful and inspiring. According to the NLT study bible "Nimrod attained great fame by conquest and terror; his empire extended from Babylonia in the south to Assyria in the north"
Your channel was suggested for me today on RU-vid. I liked your search to see if Nimrod's description related to David's mighty men but then decided it was just a description of "soldier" or something similar. My NLT agreed, saying "first heroic warrior." What has made me subscribe, though, is your reaction when you thought that God wasn't acting in character at Babel. Your instinctive response was "what am I missing?" instead of "God's not being fair!" Then you found a literary reason for the passage and a commentary that highlighted human disobedience that God needed to address. I really appreciated your honesty and your determination to understand.
I just found your channel today and I’m so glad that I did! I am a mom of 4 and I share the same struggle of managing time. I am also relieved that you are also reformed. I’m just a ‘newbie’ in the reformed theology and this recos and ideas that you give are really helpful and a blessing! Thank you. May we all continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord! Soli Deo Gloria!
Thank you soooo much for uploading and sharing! The methods you use to study God's Word are wonderfully practical. Your meticulousness is a quality I am striving for in my own Bible study.
Very useful. I use a separate notebook for key points and questions. I think I'll be more selective when referring to my bible commentary rather than trying to read it all
Omg you took somthing i was struggling with and made sense of it! I never thought to look up why the generations of Noah were even there and even just watching you do things is beneficial 😅tysm your amazing❤
The BEMA podcast, Session 1, covers the Torah. Along the way, they beautifully explain chiasm (prolly spelling that wrong) and once you know, you know. And see them everywhere! The Torah is filled with them. Learning the OT from a rabbi and Jewish follower of Jesus has totally flipped my understanding of the OT! It’s a completely different book than what I was taught growing up Episcopalian. Not sure how I found your RU-vid channel this weekend, but glad to be here. Thank you!
Thank you! I’ve enjoyed Father Mike’s Bible in a Year podcast, but I was hoping to expand with something similar from an Eastern Orthodox or Jewish perspective.
Something else I have found incredibly helpful in studying these odd sections in the Old Trestament is remembering a lot is historically based. Nimrod, more than likely Enmerkar in Mesopotamiun history, wrote on clay tablets about what these passages in Genesis are passibly referring to. Of course, we know religiously which side we are on, but it really brings quite a bit to the table.
Thank you. This was great, do you have any videos on a highlighting strategy. I’m in seminary as well and I fell like I highlight everything in yellow and it makes my page look like it got in a fight with a yellow highlighter and the highlighter won lol. I would love to have a better highlighting strategy. Any tips?
Use different colors for different themes you are studying, like green for Gods promises, orange for things in the OT that point to Jesus etc. Or I personally just take colors I likeand highlight and if there's more that stands out in whats highlighted i use a fineliner marker and circle or underline or both!
I have found high lighters to be really overwhelming to a page and so I only highlight something that I really want to stand out. I use Micron colored pens to underline instead. My color scheme: RED - GOD, CHRIST, HOLY SPIRIT, Love (GOD is love), Fire - underline in orange and circled in red (GOD is a consuming fire) PINK - (we want to be like Christ/pink wants to be like red) so anything about life of believer PURPLE - CHRIST'S righteousness, salvation ORANGE - satan, antichrist, sin, consequences BLUE - Commandments of GOD; Prophecies GREEN - clarification, doctrine issues, strong concordance, definitions BROWN - sanctuary information, historical information, heaven, angels YELLOW - Prophecies of Christ fulfilled in NT (or to be fulfilled) BLACK - notes connected to yellow and chain links through Bible... I mark next to scripture where to take someone next if I'm showing someone a theme in the Bible
This was so fun, Faith! I just read this section yesterday and really enjoyed searching these things out along with you. I think this will be the year I get the most out of my Bible reading plan for sure. Now, I need to look up that commentary you were using!
Faith, my Bible translation has the words "might hunter" to describe Nimrod. I think sometimes just looking at different translations of the same verses help me better understand the verse I am focusing on. As far as my daily time, I have been reading and just jotting notes on sticky notes and only writing in the Bible or underlining when I KNOW I want to remember for another time. I write my questions, comments, etc on the stickies and then when I have time to sit and study, I will focus on those stickies. Make sense?
Concerning Nimrod, my Bible commentary points to the following verses and reminds us that he founded the early Babylonian empire and built the city of Nineveh which was the center of the Assyrian empire. Mighty indeed!
In addition to what you explained about the Tower of Babel... also realize that GOD had promised to never do another world wide flood and here they are building a tower to try to save them from a world wide flood. It shows the same lack of trust in God that Eve lacked.
Love this! Faith, you always help me to understand scripture better and note things I didn’t see better as well as inspire me to go deeper in my studies. You’re such an inspiration ❤️🙌
Hi Faith, as always, really helpfull video! I didn’t find french bible commentary for the moment but my Bible is a study version, with a lot of notes, I will try to work with them. See you on the next video ;-)
Faith, GREAT practical video!!! Good job, ? What green pen are you using??? Does it come w/ other colors in a set? Brand name etc? Also available on Amazon? What commentary are you waiting on to use this yr? Thanks sooo much! Have a glorious day!
I have an interleaved Bible! So every other page is completely blank for notes! It is kinda awesome! I have it linked in my description, but last I heard, they have jacked the price up really high so I need to replace that link. Just look at discounted book stores and on ebay and such! I got mine for $15!
Hi Faith just watching your video on you tube when you were talking about commentaries what would be your suggestion? I found a set on Christian Bookstore Matthew Henry's Whole Bible 6 volumes what do you think of that set? Please give me some idea, Thanks. Have a Great Day.
Most of Matthew Henry’s is free online, so unless you dislike online reading it may not be the best purchase. I recommend the Bible knowledge commentary!
Hi! Just wanted to say I've been enjoying watching your videos. Very educational being im studying the bible. May I ask, which bible do you use? God Bless!!🙏❤🙏
I saw somewhere that this passage about Babel and their building a tower may have been them trying to avoid the consequences of their sin and being able to survive another flood, expecting that God would judge their sin of not filling the earth. Totally extra-biblical, but an interesting thought.
I've always wondered about the story of Noah and Ham. I just told my husband, "Why did he get so mad at Ham when HE was the one lying around naked and drunk?!" 😛 Checked a couple resources but I couldn't find a good explanation.
This was beautiful! Watching you struggle through a passage, searching hungrily for an answer that would give you understanding... that's what it's all about. (And, it was nice to see someone else doing the same "seemingly chaotic" search that many of us do...but only YOU know what You have read and understood...and what resources you have to use to find your answer.) Thank you for this very important video! It let's us know, we're doing fine.
The part where you said it sounded as if he was threatened by man, the other part in my opinion is that God was saving man from himself. Think about it, the higher they got the thinner the air and well oxygen is less people would die. 🤔 Just because we CAN do something doesn't necessarily mean we should. Just my two cents on the subject. God bless.
No I’m just making my Channel videos correspond, as often as possible, with what we are reading about! But the very nature of all those grace days means some people are 5 days ahead of me and some people haven’t even started! So, I’m focusing my videos on overarching skills, themes, tools, etc!
Last year when I fell behind on my 365 day plan that I was following, I'd just sit and PLOW and just read read read without using many sources. But, that's why I wrote a shorter 270 day plan so that there's 95 grace days, to fall behind, take Sundays off, etc!
I am reading the bible throughout this year and beyond because I have decided that I needed to start reading the bible but I am listening through the bible because I feel that I am getting it that way. Is that ok that I am listening to the bible?
