Hey, good job on the videos. I just wanted to share a thing I tried and that you might have the opportunity to try way more than me. When watching a film or any activity where you don't really move, get a blanket, and put the beardie on you, under the blanket. If it's tired it might work better, but globally the purpose is to make him sleep with your scent, then waking up already on you. They get that if you didn't attack them in their most vulnerable state, why would you now ? Of course there's still the work to make them not scared of those damn moving hands, but it helps kinda fast with handling / being on you. Once again, I've not as many beardies, and not as crazy as this one =)
Kighao Higoroshi yes but they don’t really care what you call them in English because it’s all meaningless noise to them. Same thing with dressing up your cats/dogs and naming pets in general.
“Telling them to calm down doesn’t work” no, no it does not 😂☠️ I’m always misled by how “dog-like” my dragon is...until he doesn’t respond to my voice commands 😂😂😂
This is me with my bluey. He loves cuddles, he scratches at the glass for attention, etc. He is the damn golden retriever of herps. But about every four days something happens where I am like, "oh. Not an actual pupper. Still a reptile. Yup."
Oranges' n' Grievers Beardies can learn to associate certain words with certain things. However they don’t really respond to tone of voice the same way as mammals do. Like I can meet a random dog and say “here Buddy, here Buddy” in an inviting tone and even if the dog has never learned that, they will likely rush over to me with their tail wagging. I’m sure reptiles can respond to tone to a certain extant (and loudness for sure) but definitely not as well as non-human mammals.
And yeah it’s a good idea to train your beardie to respond to words! I don’t have a beardie (yet) but if I did I’d probably say “good morning” when I wake up, “hello” when I approach the enclosure, and something dumb like “yum yum” before I bring out the food lol.
Cat Splat that’s so funny, because I actually have the opposite experience with mine! 😂 he doesn’t know words, but he definitely knows when I’m being extra “cutesy” and baby-talking him versus when I’m being regular...or even if I’m not in a great mood (which isn’t directed at him-he will just noticed and he won’t really wanna be touched or handled) Honestly, reptiles are sooooooooooo individualized that we all could’ve each gotten a dragon from the same hatch and they will all respond to the same things differently. It makes them all so cool! No wonder there are hobbyists haha Thank you all for your responses (: they were great to read! Love hearing about people’s beardies
back in February i adopted a milk snake that was nearly dead, was only fed every few months, was constantly laying in a tub of stagnant water and HATED people being near her. i decided she was the one when i first got her out and she just didn't have the energy to really do something about it, so the next day i took her home and ever since ,maybe 2 months after i got her, she has been an absolute sweetheart, only whips her tail about when you make her jump, and to this day has never bit me on purpose (only when she misses her food). all in all she's lovely to work with and i don't regret getting her for a second. I just wish she was never in the situation she was in before and never had to experience almost dying of starvation. i also had a similar experience with neglected beardies who are now demanding to come out for a cuddle every day and running around chasing the dog so they can have her toys (i have 2 females and they love each other, they are sisters after all)
@Jennifer watch all the videos you can before you get it! Everything from what you feed at what age, cage temp control/setup, everything will help! Also pleaseeee buy from a local breeder or an online breeder. You will not want a "petstore" dragon, TRUST!
I have two rescue dragons, one is so gentle and loving. The other is pretty wild. It's a lot like adopting a dog, they're all unique and their backgrounds are all different.
GoHerping titles a vid: "This is How I Tame Angry & Scared Bearded Dragons" Brian Barczyk titles a vid: "MAULED BY A REAL *DRAGON*!!! MY WORST BITE EVER - I ALMOST DIED FOR REAL THIS TIME!!! SO MUCH DRIPPING GUSHING BLOOD THAT WE ALMOST DROWNED IN IT!!!!!!1!!11!!"
So glad I don't follow that guy, I watched two of his videos and his attitude to his reptiles were so obviously unprofessional and harmful to the animals in his care that I immediately unsubscribed. All I can think is he has many kids, teens and adults who simply don't know what decent care of reptiles looks like. Even his behaviour towards his family in videos was stomach-turning. Glad I never have to meet him.
@@MsCherade9 I couldn't agree more. He is massive cringe. I have also heard people say that the animals they got from him were riddled with mites and other health issues. Not surprising given the state of the drawers he shows on camera when he messes with a snake. He is the worst kind of drama monger and I really loathe him. But let me warn you - his fans will come after you in the comments in a way even Jeffree Star fankids can't match up to.
Used to follow him and enjoy his content till I realized how full of sh*t he was and how terrible his husbandry is. So I can confirm this is an accurate title.
I’ve been bitten by a Beardie and it’s definitely respectable. It happened during feeding, and certainly was my mistake, but I suspect that the nature of the bite would’ve been different if he was agitated.
My dragon is like this, he came from a really neglectful home and my ex roommate who owned him did a horrible job at taking care of him after “rescuing” him, so thank you I needed to watch this cause he is VERY “aggressive”, literally will chase me around my room even tho I’m like 100x his size he also REALLY hates it when I do my makeup 🤣🤣
It's a lot like parenting, if you show your dragon that they can push you around they will. Try showing your hand to them with food in it so they can connect your hand with food and show you are not a threat. Leave the dragon be when you place its food down to show you mean no harm. Soothing words and slow actions when a dragon is angry is the best way to go. Gently pet its head and body until it relaxes a bit more and do that at least once or twice a day presumably after feeding. It will take awhile but your lizard child will come around. Hope this helps a little! Been trying to do research about dragon behavior and this is what I scrounged up😅😅
@@hunternyx4462 hi, this is helpful! I just bought a baby beardie (maybe 1 month old) and I need help. I can't tell if he like me or not and if I'm handling him right. It's been just over a week so I just started the bonding process so any advice will help!
@@rachelmatthews1157 lol that's funny I just got mine this week! His names hollow and hes very shy and jumpy I've been so freaked out about it because hes also still very weary of me😅 have you tried taking him out of his terrarium and holding him yet? Or have you only been petting him in his home?
@@rachelmatthews1157 it's going to take about a month for your baby to get used to you and stop being so flinchy but he should warm up to you. I usually take my beardie out once a day, twice if hes in a good mood. And I'll let him relax on me for about 15 minutes. I'll pet him consistently and he usually falls asleep and refuses to go back into his tank afterwards lol. I find he tends to back up sometimes when hes scared if he does that keep your hand behind him so he dosent fall. Dont put your hand over top and force him to stay put like the kid in this video did. It will only freak him out more. Keep petting him and quietly talk to him if hes getting a bit upset. Should calm down if he acts up to the point where u cant keep him in your hands put him back into his tank and slowly work your way back up to holding him by petting him. Just show him your love and he will feel it and trust you. Hope this helps a bit.
Mine has hated me from day 1. He’s a rescue and was in awful shape when I got him. Missing most of his tail and about 5 toes. He bites me constantly. I have tried these techniques and I’ve given up. His enclosure is dope with lots of enrichment but I’m bummed I can’t really take him out. He’s so savage he chases the cat.
@@analogkid4957 health-wise he is great. He has finally started eating greens. Turns out cactus was the game-changer. He has grown substantially and is a good size. Behaviourally, he still hates my guts. I am able to bathe him pretty well but getting him in and out of the enclosure is almost a guaranteed bite
As someone who chills with wild caught lizards pretty much every time I go outside, I actually do the same thing to help calm them down and be less stressed.
My beardie is only a few months old, and I've had her for not quite 2 months, but I've been having a hard time trying to get her used to me. She's so jumpy, and I've been letting her tantrums win and leaving her alone more than I should! I watched this (and more!) videos before I got her, but it's so helpful to come back and rewatch to get reminders. Thanks so much for your guidance!
...Exactly my experience with my beardie. After three years he and I have an understanding, but that understanding is mostly 'don't touch me and we're cool'.
I'm happy my boy (seems) to love me. I just recently helped my sister, who rescued an adult bearded, socialize her. She wasn't aggressive by any means, but she certainly wasn't used to being handled. She's the sweetest thing now. Gosh I love beardies!
I find joy in taming feral cats or animals that have lost trust in humans. It such rewarding work and I recommend for any animal lover to volunteer at your local shelter.
Bearded Dragons are adorable when they're angry- worked with a bunch of angry ones that were rescued. I helped calm them down... No matter how angry they are, I've found overall, they're one of the easiest ones to calm down, and one of the easiest to avoid being bitten by- I have been bitten by large adult ones, not as bad as like, getting pinched by a hermit crab that won't let go- lol, it's a pinch- there was a little blood, but the pinch is what I felt more than anything- he bit, and released- he didn't hold on like Tokay Geckos do. Give me a large beardie bite over a large tokay bite! (Though I'd prefer not to be bitten at all of course!)
What a great thing emerald scales and you do! I got my first bearded recently and pet stores 100% do not prepare people for the level of care these big lizards need. It's amazing someone like you puts in this great work!
When they're babies, don't even worry about the bites. A papercut would hurt more. My ball python is a little skittish still even after months of having him. So whem I pick him up, I let him know I'm there, and then set him in my lap and allow him to calm down and uncurl before actually picking him up. Once your little snake pal is slithering all around they're officially in Friendly Mode.
Show him who's the boss! Boop him on the nose and say no firmly lol I used to do this with my bearded dragon when he wouldn't "listen", he turned into a very good boi and smart too
During all my time researching prior to actually getting a boa, I always heard from people that the babies are fiesty and sometimes nippy and crazy before you work with them. At first I was apprehensive about it, but after reading about taming techniques in reptile forums and other places I started to get on board with the idea. The thought of actually calming down a defensive neonate after patiently working at it sounded pretty rewarding, and I had always thought that energetic babies were cute - just look at little blue tongued skinks, so adorable! Maybe I just got lucky, or it was due to the breeder I got him from (I'm not sure if they interact with the babies before selling them) but my boy came home calm and curious and though he's definitely gotten more comfortable with me over time, he was never frightened enough to attempt to strike me or even hiss. As I'm thoroughly in love with reptiles, I'm sure I'll end up getting another one down the road, and we'll see if I end up with an individual requiring a little extra effort to become tame. Thanks for the tips, another great video!
The bio teacher I aid for actually has three beardies and the newest female, Tiana, was super fun for me to work with because she was alot like the female shown in this video. But the sad part was she was not well cared for nor feed and was super dirty. I started by handling her for a couple hours at a time everyday coupled with leafy green feedings and giant mealworms. I did this for about a week before giving her a bath and after the first bath she really started warming up to me and I got to say that was probably the most awesome part. Now, a couple months later, she growing some fat and eating well! Good job with this female!
i genuinely cant imagine beardies as being so hostile 😳 my bearded dragon licks me when i put my hand in his cage, i know that’s not nessacerely a sign of affection but still he’s so innocent
Another way of taming reptiles (lizards usually) that I've heard of is to get a sweaty sock of your own and put it in one of their hides so they associate your scent with safety and comfort. I'm trying it with my angry Amazon tree boa. It's bites feel like a crackhead improvised their used needles as a shiv.
@@EarthsGeomancer Considering that were talking about animals that don't really give shit if they shit where they drink, or if they spread a shit and piss margarita on your arm, a sweaty sock is the least disgusting thing in regards to this
My dragon bit me twice when I first got her because I reached in without warning and I didn’t even realize she bit me. It was the TINIEST pinch and I looked at my finger and saw the calcium residue in the shape of her bite 😂 also really weird amount 7 months into having her, she was on the floor then just randomly didn’t recognize me when I went to pick her up and puffed her beard out and opened her mouth. Kinda freaked me out cause it was the first time I saw her like that. I just threw a small blanket over her and picked her up. Then she recognized me again. So odd. Kinda cute when they’re mad tho 🥺
I adopted a leopard gecko maybe over a year ago (probably 8 months idk I suc at memorizing) She has ALWAYS been super fearful and almost bit me a couple times. She was heavily abused before she was taken to a rescue. She was attacked by a cat and lost her tail, she never had the correct heating, also someone took her from a home in attempt to "rescue" her and ended up making it worse if not just as bad. They put her in a shoe box with play sand and fed her... apples... or tried to. They finally gave her to a LEGIT rescue! Now that I have her, shes been alot more social, still doesn't enjoy being handled but shes been a good girl :) I adore her so much...
I got bitten once because I fed him and he accidently bit my finger, but it didnt really hurt, just for like 2 seconds, cause they have so much power in their jaws, but I didnt bleed or anything, so ... its just a little jumpscare lmao😂 but not more 🙃
Thank you so much for all of your videos! My boyfriend has had beardies growing up his whole life. One recently passed away. So together, we're getting one in about a month. So I (never having had a beardie) have been watching many videos about caring for bearded dragons. And yours are my favorite! Thank you so much for all of your honest and helpful advice.
My beardie sat in her tank and watched this with me 😂 she’s only bit me like three or four times but only Bc I was hand feeding fruit and she’s losing her eyesight in her old age 😂 she’s never broken skin though
matt R the tail-wiping has gotten better but one of my iguanas has minor skin rot at the tip of his tail. Hopefully it gets better soon but I might have to amputate a small section of it, it should grow back fine.
when I had a beardie she was a bit angry and had her mouth open but whenever she opens her mouth i shove a piece of lettuce in there and she eats it but she doesn't like lettuce that much so she stopped opening her mouth
I feel like we lucked out.. My son FOUND a bearded dragon in the woods by our house (they are most definitely not wild on Alberta Canada!!) He's the cuddliest thing I've ever held.. nuzzles up to our necks and can just hang out for hours!! I definitely want to get a crazy one for our next beardie though!
My beardie's been chill from the moment I brought him back home. While I understand the satisfaction of taming an animal down, it's nice to just be able to take him out and hang with him pretty much whenever.
I love your channel!!! You not only are doing something great rehoming and rehabilitation for animals but educating the public on care for them!!! Keep it up! Much support!
I’ve been bit once by my bearded dragon but she was trying to attempt an escape and I had to grab her and that’s why she bit me. But he bite itself wasn’t enough to break the skin
Fun story one time I got bit by one of the sweetest beardies ever while feeding cause he can't aim and he actually bit so hard he cracked my nail at the base and me bleed a little. It was not ideal. Do not recommend.
I'm a 68 year old grandma with a bearded dragon. Go figure . These videos started showing up on my feed for some reason and must say I'm hooked. I love this kid. He cracks me up.
I would be careful with the Savannah monitor and other ones, never know if they might eat it. My beardies where cautious even when Savvy was a little baby.
im crying oh my god the editing in this is beautiful,,,,,and ntm ive been bitten by a beardie (my high school science teacher has one and i would always chill w him and the other reptiles in her room) and it literally feels like when you stick your finger into a baby's mouth and they gum at it. the teeth only hurt a little bit, and the pain is usually gone quick after u remove their mouth
Hey, i have been a fan for a super long time. If you remember me, i had the snake with dirty heat pits. You helped me get them cleaned and sorted out. I just wanted to comment to tell you that i have been watching the whole time, i just got a new channel so keep up the good work and i love your videos. Do you remember me?
taming lizards is fun, I don't know why i find it so fun but its so rewarding to see them jump into your hand and finally look at you without such a terrified look in your eyes
Think u did good on this video. Just like u said it's how the animal responds. I did like it and love how your chill and not trying to think u know it all like some. But good job and taught me something.
As the middleman who acquired this dragon (her name was Daisy) and transferred her to Emerald Scales, I can say that she will do great. My 2nd grader and kindergartener held her many times without incident.
Owner of an ex-angry beardie -- being slow and obvious with hand movements is super important, and kind of...ignoring all their defensive behaviour while being gentle with them gets results 👍 It's gonna take a different total time for every dragon; mine took up to two years to get to a totally handleable state.
Your videos have helped me and my brother so much. My parents got him a beardie and for the first 7 months of his life he hasn't been properly taken care of. I decided to educate myself and in turn my brother so that he can give his beardie a healthy life. Thank you so much!
HOW HAVE YOU NEVER BEEN BIT? (My sister's bearded dragon is very, well, ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. He will bite anything that moves especially fingers thinking it's food. Tongue aiming for it and all.)
I recently rescued a beardie from a family member's kid. Fortunately, despite not being handled much, he isn't very spicy. He is definitely shy and prefers being in his enclosure, but he lets me handle him just fine for small amounts of time before he gets too wiggly 😂
It is very satisfying winning the trust of a scared animal 😊 I don’t have any experience working with unsocialized reptiles (I’m a newer snake mom) but I have worked with my fair share of kitty cats and won over individuals who, at first, would bolt as soon as they knew I could see them.
A beardie bite is more crushing than sharp because they use their jaws to mash bugs and break small animal bones. Although the teeth sink through skin like butter and leave some pretty deep but narrow and quick healing punctures. You definitely get more bruising though and that takes a longer time to heal. Source: Bitten.
My parents got a beardie for me because he was trying to bite everyone at the pet store and nobody wanted him so he was bigger than the other dragons and they weren't sure what would happen to him. That was a little over a year ago and he's gotten a lot better. He still opens his mouth at anyone who goes to pick him up but once he's out he's totally chill. I noticed he was really skinny when I got him and I was worried we would overfeed him but now that I've seen your videos I feel confident that he's healthier now.
Usualy take it? Okay... so I have this big lizzard that ate my dog and um.... wondering if you would take it? It's like 17 feet long? This is just a joke no dogs where harmed.
