How I taught my 4 YEAR OLD to READ in a couple months!

I just started homeschooling my 4 kids and the one thing that scared me the most was teaching my little 4 year old how to read, silly I know!
I started with "teach your child how to read in 100 easy lessons", and in just weeks he was sounding out small words and in 4 months I consider him a reader!

I'm a retired K-1 teacher (I started in 1983). It's a delight to see how thrilled you are about Drew''s reading. And you didn't edit out the warts, like almost everyone does! This video is going to be an inspiration to many, many moms, as the comments already show.

Omg I could cry! I’ve been very anxious and have had this book for months. Thanks for giving me the confidence to start. My child turns 5 in August. You have no idea how your transparency has blessed me. I just prayed for this type of affirmation and your video was the answer. I’ve been feeling really bad and overwhelmed. I’ve never taught my kids to read either and you have given me hope!

Excellent Video! Apologies for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you researched - Millawdon Future Ticket Trick (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? Thank You for this! I'm a single parent of a now 5 year old girl, and I was losing my mind. You've given me another way to teach her, and teaching her the sounds instead of the actual letter helped a bit. So Thank You so very much for saving me!!!

Thank you for this!!! I'm so excited I found your channel. We too are an LDS homeschooling family. This year I'll be homeschooling two boys preschool and 3rd grade. I find comfort knowing I'm not the only one terrified and overwhelmed with teaching my youngest to read! My oldest essentially taught himself. And my youngest is STUBBORN and rowdy just like how you explained your son. I'm going to purchase the recommended books. Wish us luck! 😃
@monsonschoolhousewithmikae2903
you will do great! He learned to read so fast and then this summer he went on a reading strike, hhaha! So I backed off and he is getting back into it and our time off must have been needed cause he is reading even better after his strike! ;) I need to do a video about when your little one goes on strike, and what to do. You will do awesome

I just started this book with my 4yo yesterday. It's nice to see an example of another wiggly kid learning to read. His school sent home sight words and a book to read, but the book is so repetitive he just memorized it. It's so hard to get him to look at the words on the page and sound them out without guessing. I'm kind of annoyed at his school, I wish they would send home a phonics reader instead.

I believe my little one is highly intelligent. I just get a little anxious trying to teach her how to read. She's about to be 5 in October and I feel like she should know how to read already. She knows the sound of all the letters so that's out the way. Definitely will get this book. Patience is key.

Thank you for this video. Im starting homeschooling. I have 4 year old twins and I was really nervous if i could teach them to read. This video really encouraged me. Thank you. God bless you. 💗
@monsonschoolhousewithmikae2903
I have twin boys too! Mine are 9 years old now. 4 years old is almost right when they start to get "easier" ;) Twin boys are SO fun, and it got even better when I homeschooled them, their hearts softened and we all came closer together. You can do this!

MonsonSchoolhouse Thats great news that they get easier. 😊 I have four kiddos. The twins are the youngest then 6, and 8 year old. I loved ur video on scheduling homeschooling and being led by the spirit. It made me feel such a relief and taking a step back to the reason for homeschooling for our family. Which their are many reasons but the most important was being led by God. I just bought this book about teaching my lil ones to read. I cant wait to start now that i saw ur video. I was fearful if I could teach them. But you really encouraged me. Thanks alot. 💗💗

I bought it before couple of months .. my focus is my kid to know his letters well before I try this method with him .. so glad to see a positive feedback .. you did a great job mama 👏👏👏

I'm so glad I came across this! I fear terribly to put my children in public school because of what I've been thru and most schools have been thru and I fear that every day! Until I saw this video I felt SO FLIPPING RELIEVED!!!! ✨🙌🏼😭 I have a 4yr old daughter (she has a slow progress to speaking correctly) and a 3yr old son that I'm currently trying to potty train and to slowly get them to read and write As a mom to another (any moms are welcomed to comment down🥰) how can I encourage my children to go potty thru out the day and for them to start reading 🤔🤔 Please and thank you!!! ❤️

Thanks for sharing. My little strong willed girl is turning 4 next month! I LIGHTLY started some fun, here and there home school last year. This year I want to take it a little more structured without going overboard. This encouraged me. I think I might try these books and see where it goes. p.s the "ABC song ive discovered is possibly not the best way to start. Aana (my little one) sang it well but when we started to break down the letters the "quick" part of the song (LMNOP) i came to realize was kinda one letter to her! lol. Thanks again. !st time home school mom here so ill take all the advise and success stories i can!

Reading really scares my little princess at the beginning as she might make errors. We used the mcguffy readers for our four year old. He took to them well. He went through the primer, first level reader and halfway through the second reader. Since he just turned 5 we allowed him to have more leisure reading and has gone through 11 of the magic tree house series books. My son took to reading very well. We taught him letter sounds and then jumped on combinations of two letter sounds. It was also a matter of months.

No they don’t need to know how to recite the ABC’s! It’s great if they actually don’t already know the ABC’s because then their first impression of each letter is its actual sound, making it easier for them to pick up reading in my experience.
