This is the story "How I taught Grandmother to Read" by Sudha Murthy in Hindi. This is a beautiful story of a twelve-year-old girl who lives in a village, with her grandparents. Her grandmother is illiterate because she had never gone to school. She was married young and became a mother and then a grandmother at a young age. She was happily busy in her family life taking care of everyone but at times would have the regret of not having learnt to study. Her granddaughter would read out stories from magazines and she especially followed one, very closely: Kashi Yatre written by the popular writer Triveni. Grandmother identified with the protagonist and that made the story more interesting for her. Once the granddaughter was away for a week to a neighbouring village to attend a wedding. On her return, she found grandmother very sad. On asking grandmother told her that she had realized that even though they were well off yet she was dependent on others to even read a story. She had made up her mind that she would learn reading and writing Kannada. Grandmother asked her twelve-year-old granddaughter if she would teach her the language. The granddaughter readily agrees and the teaching and learning begin from the following day. Saraswati Puja during Dassehera was the deadline set by grandmother for her to able to read a full novel. The day of Saraswati Puja arrives and Grandmother takes her granddaughter to the Puja room where the picture of Goddess Saraswati hangs. Grandmother makes her granddaughter sit on a stool and bows down and touches her feet to show her gratitude and respect to her teacher. The narrator gifts her the newly published novel Kashi Yatre and Grandmother turns the pages and starts reading aloud!
