African American raised in the southeast.. my first trip to Korea, I bought my ticket, planned where i was staying and everything... i kept mentioning stuff to my dad and he always said no.. so 3 months before I left, I told him I was going on vacation from work for 2 weeks.. and just showed him my new passport. He had a fit.. but I think the fact that I figured it out myself is what lead him to just accept it! So I feel you girl!

Girl, I feel you. I was so scared to tell my parents I'm moving to Korea. Once I told them they were supported it ,but became concern about COVID-19. As I am waiting for my documents to come, I think they are slowly realizing that I'm leaving especially since my siblings keep saying that I'm moving to Korea. One advice for people trying to tell your parents: Get your siblings on your side and ask them to help you convince your parents.
@heyitsanne
@heyitsanne 4 года назад
that is definitely really good advice i forgot to add! having my siblings as my support system was soooo helpful, especially i think after i left! it wasn’t too much of a shock for them so they were able to help the family adjust better

It's like looking in the mirror...are you my soul? I'm the eldest of 3, Nigerian raised in the UK. I got reprimanded, heavily by my parents for expressing my artistic nature (I attend Deeper Life Church, guys. if you know, you know) I did my undergraduate degree in Accounting and Finance. I picked up Taekwondo, intentionally play pop, watch kdrama and speak Korean within their earshot through my undergrad years. I graduated. they told me to attend LSE for my master's degree, I said no thanks, I dedicate this degree to you, however, my master's degree is mine, I'm studying TESOL. Ladies and gentlemen, this is how I won my parents over. now they know it is very likely I end up with an Asian man and my parents said: "as long as he's truly born again, we don't mind where he's from." Perseverance paid off at last. Can't wait to be done with my degree in winter. this time next year imma be all over south-east Asia. very excited. But wow, that boyfriend thing though..you've got chwest girl. I salute you. That right there is my line.

I felt like crying when you were talking about your experience, because that's how i've felt all my life. The words they say really hurt. I remember the words so vividly, despite how young I was. As kids, we remember everything. It really hurts and the fact that you can't even talk to them about it bc they see it as disrespect, and you have to tolerate them and bear all that pain alone, and apologize even when you're not in the wrong...it's hard. And they just don't understand sometimes. And I also completely agree with not telling them until its done. It's not everything you tell them, bc the discouragement is too much. A lot of placements i've gotten is through me not telling them, because I don't need their negative energy lol

I'm going through exact same thing... Except I'm expecting to leave on 7th August.. I haven't told my parents yet.. And it's 21st June. I've left it really last minute. I know exactly what you mean about not telling them because of the negative/discouraging things they would have said. I know for me, it would have been enough for me to withdraw from the program and as you said, it's a long process and a lot of work, and I knew I had to support myself. I know they're not going to be happy and have nothing good to say about it.. I know it'll come from a place of concern because they want the best for me and want me to make safe choices.. But I'm so stressed about telling them! Gosh I really resonated with your story.... Wish me luck T^T x

I really loved watching your video and it gave me so much comfort knowing that I am not alone in this. My story is the same as yours. My dad is Nigerian, and my mom is South African. I am in my third year of college, and I already have my TESOL certificate. My dad payed for it, however, now that I have it and am dead set on teaching in Korea by 2022, my dad is slowly discouraging me and already has "ideas" for what I could do rather than teaching. This is when I spoke to my mom and asked her what she thinks I should do because I really don't see myself doing anything else, for now. And she basically said what you said. I should go for it not stop for anything or anyone. She said "you still have plenty of time to get your life together". So this has been my motivation to keep going, and start planning ways to support myself through the application process and everything! Thank you for this video, it was so inspiring :)

Hey Anne with an E, haha. I just wanted to say I respect the balance you held telling the story. You are aware that your parents love you and have good intentions even when they do not really understand your decisions. I find that it is easy to write off parents because they have hurt us and we think they don't care or understand us. I always try and see life from their perspective even when I disagree with them. There comes a time in life where we must spread our wings and leave home or do things differently not out of defiance but because we convinced it is will be good for us. Thanks for sharing.

African parents needa also understand why we choose ourselves bc they chose themselves when they were going to go somewhere it was different. Nobody was controlling them but they still had to do what to do for themselves to get the life they wanted for their kids and themselves but have to come to realization that at the end of the day…your kid will always have their own way of living and want to live as they see fits. Acceptance is so needed with african families and us kids need that shit.

I can't believe how relatable this is🙌🏽 I'm South African. I went through the whole application, research and picking a company to work in China without my parents knowing. I also knew they'd be negative and I was scared I'd listen to them. I kept it secret until I had to go apply for my visa which was in another city. It was explosive the night I decided to tell them I got a job and was moving as soon as my visa was sorted. A week later I just told them I'm going to the capital city and left when they were still upset with me. They started coming around while I was in the capital (I was encountering problems with my documents and stayed there for almost 3 months). My mom would call me and say I heard so and so's child moved to China, which made me even more upset at them (they chose to believe someone else over me). I went back home a week before flying out to China. By then they had come around and my mom even took out a loan for me. It was so hard to do that without their initial support but I made it.

My parents aren't as strict as yours but I also waited to tell them. Like you said it's a long process that requires lots of waiting and my thought was why worry them about something I don't know will happen. I told my dad first because I knew he'd be super supportive and he was. I told my mom not long after but with my mom I was a lot more worried. I knew she would have a ton of questions so I made sure to do a ton of research (I also watched Traveling Nat and Mel on the Move among others) to get as many answers as I could. Because I had answers to basically all her questions she was a lot more accepting which I was thankful about. It's tough to have your child move so far away but I'm happy both of our parents see that we are happy and doing well!

@@heyitsanne lucky, I’m jealous. I only have my Nigerian citizenship and since Nigeria isn’t officially considered an English speaking country, we can’t apply to teach through good programs like epik. The agencies we have access to always make you sign a bond.

a bond? hm i didn’t even know there are agencies for nigerians to come to korea to teach.. what are they if you don’t mind me asking?

yeah, basically agreeing that you can only work that one job under the contract. It’s not an official teaching job specific agency per se. It’s just a branch under the company my parents work in (total e&p). They are affiliated with lots of different industries from different countries and in turn, they provide opportunities to children and spouses of their employees. It’s the type of situation where you have to know someone that knows someone 😂
