Just some random description stuff to help the rankings:
This is a video about how i tricked my brain into liking difficult things. It's about building habits and being consistent at the gym. It's also about how to read when you hate reading.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet, but one of the keys to enjoying stuff is knowing the deeper meaning behind what you're doing. For example exercising, you should research a bit about anatomy, human biomechanics and how the body functions, and how all the muscles work together. It'll make exercising a totally different experience. The same thing applies to other activities, If you take a walk in the forest you might not think too much about the trees and plants around you, but if you take the time to go read about forest life and nature i general, you're going to notice things you never would've before, and therefore taking a walk in the forest becomes a completely different and much more enjoyable experience. You can apply this process to many aspects of your life. hopefully this will help you and make you enjoy and appreciate stuff and life more :)

@@emmadora9509 Read about what you are learning, for exemple, if you are reading(idk), about Imaginary numbers, read where they are used and why they are used. Yeah. I think that ist it. Read where the thing you are learning is used and why is used.

It's true. My first job was less than 20 hours per week and I just hated having to go to work. I had to make my own schedule and I procrastinated and did the bare minimum, did as little as I could get away with. My next job was at UPS, I had to show up and work extremely hard manually, still part time. But it was different because it felt like I was actually doing something with my hands instead of stupid computer based auditing. Still sucked, though. I kinda liked showing up and bullshitting with my coworkers, who were generally friendly. My next/current job is fulltime, and twice the payrate too. My coworkers are all great, and after switching shifts and getting to know a couple of them we've actually hung out outside of work a few times. Now, I really like my job and I have learned to love working. There's a certain thrill to being able to get lots of stuff done, being fast, and doing quality work. There's a hope in the back of your mind that someone will notice and the idea excites you, maybe someday you'll get a promotion, and you know the whole time that you're getting paid a decent living wage to try. It's a similar thrill to what I get from getting good at a video game, it makes you feel like a badass. I mean I could go on about how I've been dealing with procrastination in general too but this is already way too big

I hate to be "that guy" since I'm a millenial but I really think technology is the problem. Everyone I know is addicted to their phone and would rather sit around scrolling through facebook than do anything else. Going to the gym or reading a book simply CANNOT compete with the internet in terms of reward sensations to our brains. Many people are starting to realize that it takes hard work and self-discipline to break free from the addictive influences of the internet. I am saying this as someone who gave up facebook earlier this month and went straight to youtube. Still working on it.

@@Nicole-tc3kd Two chrome extensions that basically do the same thing, but paired together killed off a wicked bad youtube addiction that I'd been dealing with for half a year after I had kicked facebook and reddit. Crackbook revival, and Mindful Anti Distraction. They break the instant dopamine hit cycle. I like to put crackbook at a 10 second wait, but the 3 seconds worked for other things before I grew more patient. You'll notice that you'll have clicked on videos, and within the 10 second delay you won't even remember what the video was, you were barely engaged, but you just wanted to click something. Also recommend using uBlock Origin to nuke the recommended videos on youtube's homepage. That and use the block element tool to nuke the youtube icon up in the top left corner. No need to keep going down the rabbit hole once you've gotten bored. It's time to leave. Only problem with blocking the front page is that you lose the content on channels pages, haven't figured that out, but it's not a big problem. Good luck out there

I think a lot of us are starting to realise how bad our technology addictions are. So much time is spent on social media, video games and watching videos and we don't realise how it's affecting us. I would bet a large sum of money that it has a lot to do with why people feel so run down and are depressed. Better habits equal a better life.

That's My problem, My routine is hard as fuck because I want to be the person at the end of the sacrifices, but it's tough as fuck, how do people like the process? The process of being a professional Makes You study like for 3000 hours of your life, the process of being ripped requires a diet. I can't understand how people like this, so I do It anyway but I struggle a lot and take some breaks off

The videos are short and simple and frankly, I think we dislike the guy because he's telling us what our lazy side doesn't want to hear. This is an amazing concept: do not focus on goals but on habits instead. I learned it by myself when struggling with yoga, working out and fancying a beautiful, strong and flexible body. I came to realize that it's quite pointless to set yourself a goal on things like working out, reading or playing an instrument. None of these are concrete goals, but buildable processes. After two years of practicing yoga consistently (1 to 1.5 hours every day), I forgot about getting flexible or how my body looked like, and without realizing it, I can now do poses I would have never dreamed I would be able to do a couple of years ago. I love doing yoga, it makes me feel like a ballerina. You are right: the key is to enjoy the process and forget about the goal. If you keep consistent, you will achieve it anyway. By the way, I guess it was not a coincidence to pick The Power of Habit as the book you put next to your coffeemaker to get it read...

But I feel that it also can be a trap as well by creating the illusion of doing something substantial while it's actually distracting me from doing the things that, according to these books, need to be done.

Man, this actually kinda blew my mind. I was playing with the idea of going to the gym again as new years resolution. After watching this vid, I feel stupid about my mentality. How to trick my brain into doing hard things: 1) Don't fantasize on the end goal but enjoy the process. The feeling of fantasizing being a Greek God is different from actually going to the gym, which demotivates you from working out. 2) Come from an abundance mindset and not a scarcity mindset. Saying I NEED to practice is a scarcity mindset which makes doing things feel like a chore. 3) Use habit bunching. Combine the habits you're already doing with the habit you want to cultivate. If you drink coffee every morning you can bunch it together with reading a book while making/drinking coffee. And thank you Joey Schweitzer, the face behind Better Ideas for creating this video :)

Having a playlist I am only allowed to listen to when I workout truly is helpful. I've been working out consistently for 2 months now and I find that if you really like the music you're listening to you will want to workout just so you can listen to that song that's been stuck in your head. It has been especially helpful to change my mentality around exercise. To cultivate a positive association with exercise, I wrote down how I felt after every workout (energized, happier, proud, achieved etc.) for a month to where now I just know that when I go to workout especially on days that I don't want to, that I'll feel better (mind and body) afterward. Also, allow yourself to have days where you just can't lift as much, do as many reps, etc. Use your body as a guide to how much you can go that day because what's important is that you put in effort to keep the daily habit even if you didn't show up 100%.

1. rather than focus on a goal, try to enjoy the process - stay in the moment and make yourself just start and you'll probably keep going (it doesn't have to be that serious or perfect. If you READ, find "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Dr. Normal Vincent Peale. Published 1952. And, yeah, a lot of the examples are from the 40's and 50's, so it may sound "old" and "quaint" but the principles have stayed the same. It's one of the most-read books in the world. For years, I had it in audiobook form, too, on cassettes, and I'd listen to one in my vehicle as I drove. Coincidentally, yesterday, I went on Amazon and bought (used) the book on CD's because I want to go back to listening to it. I've been HUGE on reading for decades now, and it's the BEST book I've ever come across on learning "positive" thinking. (You can see if your library carries it, check it out, and read a bit to see what you think, so you don't spend $. Also, google "Norman Vincent Peale" and see what's up about him. Famous figure. And, don't be put off by fact he's a minister. I'm an atheiest and still have gotten SO much out of his books because they are so PRACTICAL. (They're NOT about "praying" your way out of anything including negative thinking. PRACTICAL ways of looking at what's going on in your life, instead. All the books written since his, on "positive thinking" are just "re-hashes" of what he wrote.

You pretty much explained everything about what just happened with me, I bought a game a month ago (Visual Novel), did all the routes and saved best route for last, but I found myself spacing the gaming sessions so much that I went from playing around 2 hours per session to around 30 minutes per session. All to delay the inevitable end that is to come. The best route was just that, the best route, and I loved it so much. So when I finally finished it after days of trying to lengthen the enjoyment, I of course felt empty as hell for the next two weeks desperately searching for another visual novel with a similar premise to replace it. In the end, I still occasionally look at that one game at the top of my steam library, remembering what a damn good ride it was.

Whenever I think about whether or not to train, my brain searches for reasons why I do not have time for it. To avoid that I say to myself "stop!" and instead of thinking about it I start doing it immediately (at least take the first step) . I can do that in many cases like whether or not read, learn, study at the moment. This method works for me almost everytime.

Exactly! We always think that we have to "feel" a certain way in order to do something that may be hard or uncomfortable. If we all did this, then nothing would get done, no one would get anywhere. It's important to realize that you can start doing something no matter what you're feeling in that moment. You'll usually find that what your brain thought was so terrible actually isn't so bad. So don't listen to the voice in your head that says, "that's too hard, I can't do it." It won't get you anywhere. Just start performing the action and tell your brain to shut the hell up :)

What I realized so many years after the fact is that while the school system is far from perfect, it can actually be instrumental in training our self-discipline, work ethic, and time management skills. Those skills could later be applied to whatever you decide to do in life. That's another way of looking at schooling that might make you see it in a way that makes it more useful and beneficial for your future plans. It's like practice for getting stuff done later in life in your career/business/etc...

I totally agree with the guitarist here, 1-2 years ago, I wasn’t into playing the piano anymore to a point where my parents wanted to sell it, I said no obv. My piano teacher using terms like “practicing, homework” and more school related terms had really taken a toll on me wanting to play and burned me out. It's a pretty interesting topic, I've first heard about it by Aj Hoge, he teaches English (and I'm learning it) He says you need to build a habit for reading or listening to english. Let's say you wanna build a reading habit and to do that you need to pick something personally interesting to you and pick something you already like a lot and combine these two things (I hope I didn't make that confusing) So if you wanna read non-fiction books often but you don't feel like it, listen to some music that you like a lot, that one that gets you pumped (like Saitama said in the video), and overtime your brain will associate the feeling of getting pumped by the music and the habit of reading something in a foreign language, so it'll come a day where you get excited about reading and you won't need the music anymore It's all about psychology

EDIT: just adding one thing I saw in the latest Vsauce's video, you have to combine a feeling with the activity, if you do the activity mindlessly, that's how you'll feel even when you're done with the task, if you feel uptight doing the task youll feel this way etc. So if you're happy, excited and eager (in a good way) to do the task, and maintaining this emotion throughout the task, it'll come a day where you feel this way exclusively about the task, and you can, kind of, go back to doing the task mindlessly, because now you're enjoying it more than never, so it's not mindless anymore.
