you are the only stylist on youtube that understands that there are people that can't get a professional cut; whether it's because they don't have the money or have just had bad experiences with too many hairdressers. love your channel ❤
For me it's not the matter of prices but it's a matter of hairdressers not having much experience with cutting curly hair. So my hair is 3a/3b, and the curls can last up to 5 days without a need of restyling however every time I go for a cut, my hair goes crazy for a few days, ends up looking wavy, dry, brittle and what not, until it goes back to it's curl pattern. I mean, hairdressers here are amazing, it's a very high quality studio however, people here, if they have curly hair, they just want it straightend so hairstylists can't really get much experience on what to do for curly hair to make it look amazing when actually worn curly.
@@amerie.k6 for me it's been like 6 years I tried to trim my hair on my own but not with hair cutting. The last time I got my haircut with hair cutting shears was like 6 years ago
Thank you Mel! I don't have curly hair but I watch your videos to help my 12 year old daughter. She started rocking her curls about 4 months ago and last week she told me : "mom I love my hair now". What she considered her weakness has now become her strength, and for me that is priceless. Thank you again Mel ♥️
I know I’m 2 years late, but my when I was younger my hairstylist used to make me blow dry my own hair and wouldn’t style it because of how long it was lol and then convinced me to cut it off (I was like 16 so I didn’t know how to stand up for myself at the time lol)
if that's all you care about then don't get a haircut. I have a cosmetology license and this drives me crazy... get conditioner and treatments and just let it grow...
Thank you for this! I went for a “trim” last week and from 4 fingers off that we agreed somehow I end up with triple the length off. I HATE when stylists do that
That's why I learned years ago to trim my own hair!! I love her videos and thank God she had the heart to make and share this video because half these so-called "pros" don't listen to their customers because they do what "they" think it's best vs giving the "paying" customer what they want!!😒
As someone with trichotillomania, I have serious salon anxiety. I just trimmed my hair using your method, and it came out great! Thank you for this video!
This video has made me re-evaluate whether I actually NEED to have my hair cut at my next colour appointment, because I automatically get it done, whether it's needed or not. My hair is healthier than it's been for a long time, is still shaped nicely, no split ends, so I'm thinking not. Thanks Mell, I always come away from your vids feeling like I've learned something.
I have course, porous, 2B-2C hair (thanks to binge watching your videos I now know that) and I have used several products and techniques I’ve learned from you and my hair has changed in just 2 weeks. I don’t even recognize my hair! I can’t believe everything i thought I knew! My hair is not frizzy, it’s lifted and soft and more wavy and just the besttttt! You are saving hairs all over the world!! Thank you!!!
@Mell, thank you so much for your videos. My wife wanted me to cut her hair and I have NEVER done anything like this. She has incredibly curly hair and I was a nervous wreck but your videos gave me the confidence to get it done and it came out great! Thank you!
*I haven't had my hair cut/trimmed in 6 years. It's now down past my butt. I went to get a spiral perm and the 19 year old stylist fried my hair off. I had 1ft cut off after that. This is why it's been 6 years, that I haven't been back to a beauty salon.*
My mom has cut my hair my whole life, but a couple weeks ago I was craving some bangs, so I cut some long side bangs and trimmed the other side of my hair to add some layers. It was actually so fun 😂
I have NEEDED this video. I moved, which meant losing my hairdresser, and while I was waiting to find someone, I wanted to trim my own hair so bad but was too scared.
I have never found anyone that could cut my hair without ruining it.... Thank you for enabling us blessed curly haired folk with the knowledge to maintain our manes 😁
Ermagerd I just want like a live stream of you cutting at the salon. Lemme see all the cuts on all the curl types! I'm addicted to your actual knowledge, not the curly girl cult.
Mell, would you please, please, PLEASE do a video on thin fine curly hair?? Like best hairstyles and how to style? Thanks for all the videos they help so much, love your channel 💞
I always thought all the hair grows at the same time I never knew that different parts of the hair grew differently than other parts. I always wondered about that thank you for clearing that up
Hey! could you do a video like this only explaining how you cut/trim your seester’s hair? i love the shape and have a similar length and curl type to her. thank you! x
Best most helpful video ever ! Some hair stylists don’t even know how to cut textured hair ! that’s why i do it myself lol i’m in cosmetology school and they don’t even make us learn how to cut textured hair.. no wonder why no one knows how!
That up-close shot of your curls was 🔥 Soft looking, shiny, perfect spirals, looking real good. I’m inspired...I’m going to trim my ends tonight! ✂️ ✂️ ✂️
Could you explain a bit more about “stacking” and having layers with curly hair? I tried to explain to my hair stylist how I want more layers like yours and she still didn’t do it because she said my hair is long. She advice me that when styling my hair I could just crunch up my roots to give it that effect but still doesn’t look right.
munchy8427 - The struggle is real.. I never know if I’m being told ‘no’ for a legit reason or if I am just not communicating exactly what I want (cos I’m technical term oblivious) 🤷🏻♀️
@@kimberlyg5887 Truly is a struggle! I think if Mell was to respond, she would say to look for a different hairstylist which I will. I just hope i find the right one! And low key hoping she will make a video of curly hair layers!
Any hairdresser has to know the layers, get another one or do it yourself if she does not understand what you are meaning. I would not trust it😅 I’m a hairdresser myself and since i’m only wearing my hair curly i cut it myself. Lack of good hairdressers that can properly cut curls. I do it in the same way as here🤘🏼
Your hairstylist probably doesn’t know how to cut layers into long hair. I’m a hairstylist. I know. You need to get another stylist. Although during these trying times with the pandemic some stylist are not taking new clients. Check out Mells video on teaching her Seester how to cut her own hair with unicorn method.
This is the video that got me cutting my own hair. I got lazy and forgot the details so I’m back. Thanks a lot it’s been so nice getting to cut my hair the way I want with skills I learned from you
Happy to see you cut your hair when it's wet. Been seeing a lot of curly videos saying to do it when it's dry, but that's super tough with my wavy hair!
Omg thank you! I don’t want to go a salon anymore, my experience was bad. My hair was almost to the hip. I was growing it for almost 2 years. I went to a salon to get layers and the lady cut my hair mid way to my torso, around where my bra is. I wanted to cryyy!! She said I looked better that way. And she left one side longer than the other one. Not to also mention that she brush the hell out of my curls while they were DRY!! Now I have spilt ends and I hate them. I’m too scared to go to another salon, but I’m glad I found this video!!
I fell down a hole of watching people with curly hair give themselves haircuts and came across your channel and I knew right away that i trusted mell and I've been binging her videos for DAYS now
Mell, I just wanted to say... I'm quite new to your channel, but I just really love your energy. I don't know what it is, but you're video's give me the feeling of being in a nice, safe, warm, calming little corner. Maybe it's your voice, or your sense of humour, or your way of speaking, but you make me feel happy! Lovely!
Best haircut I've ever done on myself after following your suggestions and tips. I like to care for my own hair, as I haven't had great experiences at a salon. Thank you. Love your content; they're so helpful.
Literally you just saved me from chopping all my hair off 😫🙏🏼. I have been so upset with my hair. So thank you for shedding some light ❤️. You're a goddess!
I have been cutting my own hair for years now becuase I have YET to find a hair stylist who is able to listen to be when I say "Just a TRIM please". Lol. Thanks Mell for the tips. I'll be adding a few of these to my hair cutting routine! Glad to see you feeling a bit better I hope.
So excited to use these tips! I'm dying for a trim, but I don't trust anyone with my hair anymore 😅 thank you for your channel, it's changed my hair life 💗🙌
Hi!!! I just recently followed your tutorial and it brought my curls back thank you so much girl! 💕 most informative and clean base and to touch up when dry allowed me to start fresh!
Thank you!!!!! I had a horrible headache this week for 2 days. Then I realized how thick my hair had grown. I did a careful trim over a few days near the one spot the headache was and boy does my head feel better! I’m still planning on going in for a professional trim - but with no extra time this week your video was an answer to prayer! Thank You!!!
2 down 2 to go. I imagine trimming hair is difficult. Trimming your own hair must be even more difficult. So trimming your own hair whilst tutoring others must be near impossible. Yet you makes it look effortless. You are truly amazing
Thanks for the awesome tips! I cut my own hair, so this is super helpful! I love how you said not to get too sizzor happy, I've totally done that in the past, and subsequently am now growing my hair out lol. I mean, it was probably for the best because my hair is way healthier now. Love you Mel!!!
I did this haircut but I did it in much smaller sections because my hair is super super thick. It took me awhile but it looks nice :-). Oh, and mine is also a complete re-shape using this method so thank you so much! It’s now round as opposed to pyramid LOL
You are the only one I trust, and I’m going to brave it because of COVID quarantines. My curls never looked so good since I found your channel! Your advice is gospel!
I'm so fascinated by the different methods out there. Another stylist suggests twisting loosely and trimming at an angle feathering down. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Omg I was just wondering about how to cut my own hair for the first time ! Being a curly headed in India, I cannot rely on any salons ...but just on my own hands and RU-vid videos
I used to see my mom trim hair like that. : ) But she never told me how to comb my hair, apparently, as I've been doing it upside down! Your hair is gorgeous!
Mel, thank you! The 1st cut I did used your pony tail technique. Today, I purchased new scissors and couldn't wait to try using these instructions. It will be wonderful to go back and get my hair cut by my stylist, but until then my curls are poppin'! Thank you! Oh, I said that. Well I am grateful.
Happy texture Tuesday! I might just give this a try this weekend. My vacation starts in just a little over a month and it would be great to start it with fresh, happy hair. I love your videos. I have never been so committed to watching anyone else's videos the way I am to yours. Thank you for being you. Always remember, you are a strong, beautiful woman. Receive all the love from all of us, your loyal followers. ❤
My hair definetly needs a trim with urgency! I just have not found the hairdresser who understands my hair. Every cut gets messy. I wish I could have an apointment with you girl, but I am gonna follow thru you advises and let you the results...😃
Love it! My middle layer wasn't cut short enough in the back so it was kinda flat, and just kept getting flatter as my hair grew out. I dry cut that layer a tiny bit shorter, maybe an inch, and it looks like it's rounding out a little better now. Thanks for telling me to take a step back from the scissors because I was getting too into it lol. No telling what I would've done!
I’ve had a love hate relationship with my curly hair since I was little. I’ve shaved my head multiple times and now I’m at a point where I love my curly hair and want to grow it out for good. My problem is I’m having a hard time finding someone who specializes in curly hair in my area. I’ve been avoiding a trim or cut because every time I go to get one, it looks pretty mediocre and just not satisfying. Thinking about trying it at home so I’ll be binge watching some videos for a while before I dive in. Thank you for being so informative and transparent 🙏
Video request: How to refresh after a gym session! Maybe a low-intensity workout as well as a sweaty, sweaty session. How to tie up hair for a workout and how to clean up afterwards. All the info online is not helpful... It just says "try to not sweat as much on your non-wash days!" Well, I sweat... a lot... always... so that is not an option. I usually rinse my hair with water quickly, but I really try not to fully wash or even co-wash for about 3-4 days.... Can we have epic curls and booty gains?! Thank you for everything always!
Jennifer Pearce hey I’m a curly swimmer! I recommend basins swim repair shampoo bar and basin white conditioner bar, and a Maui moisture hair mask. I wash every time I swim (4-5 times a week), condition everyday, and do a hair mask 2-3 times a week. I never really use styling products because I usually just put it in a French braid so that I don’t have worry about changing my style for swim or dance. I hope that helps!
I stress cut my hair yesterday and tweaked it some today. I cut quite a bit out. Thankfully I didn't mess it up. It actually looks fine to me. Glad I watched this video for some tips.
I would always see everyone use the denman brush and thought it was an exaggeration. Until I got my own, OMG! I've never had so many ringlets. It's the best brush ever, thanks for the recommendation, and the haircut.
I love what you’ve done. I have tight curls (my cousin Jason calls them bungee jump curls). Now I’m a hair pro in my own right from products, coloring, etc. and I only do dry trims. In the past, I literally developed anxiety going to salons! I still am uncomfortable from the years of how poorly salons in Manhattan treated me! One time a male stylist working at a salon at 81st street referred to my front curls as, “...I don’t know what that junk is...” to his fellow colleague. Nasty, rude and awful. I sat and cried silently. He’s lucky. That’s all I say. I was 11 years old. My mom says she should of sued. This is a mere synopsis of the day. In the late 1980s thru the 1990s many salons didn’t know curly hair. It’s was very disheartening. Times changed. My stylist on Canal Street is the best Gay Japanese-American Stylist who treats hair like art and we’ve sang together and he can move! The salon is dope! Nervous? Champagne! Tired? Espresso! Amen! Your video proves that horrid time is over! Thank you Darling! 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 Much love for sharing your knowledge! I appreciate you, truly! I pledge to donate. 😇🙂❤️
I’m so scared to give myself a cut but living in a area where there aren’t any curly girl stylists I do feel comfortable with only cutting the fairy knots out which I notice has helped until I get a actual cut.
I’ve been washing my hair 5+ days a week since I started my curly hair journey 4 years ago because I always had crazy frizz after sleeping in a bun... little did I know, the main solution to my problem was $11.99 on amazon. 😂😍 Thank you, Mel!!! 👑
Ironically I just trimmed my hair by myself today before watching this 😂 I think i did all of those things you mentioned but thank you for making this 😅
Your did great, I loved the end result. I get my hair trimmed every 2-3 months, but my face framing hair never looks how I want it. I may use your tips just for that area and see what I can do. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video Mell! I have been dry cutting my hair for a while (and I do exactly like you were, go me!) but I'm still nervous to go in when it's wet. I might give it a try now 💜
Its SO easy to trim your dead ends away. But i believe its because our hair is more fine and easy to follow. If i had thick dense hair idk maybe it might be harder? Maybe not haha. But just gave myself a much needed trim. My problem area is my crown, the top middle part of my head. Wow extreme breakage. Idk why, its very frustrating. But my hair is all trimmed and even and the definition in my cursl are BETTER. Can't wait for it to grow out. Id rather take care of my own hair because it's free and i dont have to wait when my hair needs immediate attention. Thanks girl for giving me even more confidence to tend to my own hair.💖🙏🙌
This was so incredibly helpful! Thank you so much! I just gave myself a trim using your video and my hair looks better than ever! And I saved the $100 I would have spent at the salon!
I've learned soooooo much my hair is about 20" long curly and wet no idea how long flat ironed out , thank you so much for this video finally someone understands that there are different textures in my hair and I have to treat them differently! Really enjoyed this is you look like my girl Tori Kelly 💓
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! My hair is actually very similar to yours but I do not have the time and resources to do the same haircare routine you do so I am always falling a little too flat or frizzy. Nowadays I am often seen wearing a braid or pigtails because I just can't manage all this cuuuurl. I am in dire need of a trim though so I am going to cautiously proceed with the tips you gave here and do a very minor trim before going back to it maybe the next day. Thanks for this!
Newcomer here who binged all of your curly hair videos - you, your sister, and your videos are awesome! ❤️ I would love it if you could do a wavy hair video or one dedicated to perms!!! I just got one recently and have been really struggling with it 🤦🏻♀️
Hope one day my curls can look like yours 😍😍😍 I cut all my hair off cz I damaged to the point it was nappy straight😥 I'm trying to grow it out but it's going to b long time since I have a almost pixie cut😔 I love u mel keeping doing what you do!! U are a true inspiration that's ur gift from God!! Use it cz we need more ppl like u!! I mean it!! Thanks for what u and what your seester do it really is beautiful!!! Its hard to find curly hair hairstylists that actually know wtf the are doing!! Love u doll!!!💕💕💕
I usually hack my hair to pieces. Pony tail cut. Guilty!.... I wanted to try something more elegant and came across thos video.....i tried this method and i think this is how im going to trim my hair from now on. Easy and brilliant. Thank you so much. ❤🤗
I’m so glad I found your video! I’m going to attempt a trim on myself. 🤞🏽I hate going to people. They never do a good job and I end up paying to leave in tears. If my hairs gonna look like shit it may as well be at my own hand. I’ll figure it out sooner or later. ❤️ thanks again!
Just bought the brush you recommended (both the Denman and the wet brush for untangling) and the verb products!! Thanks for the recommendations!! Hope you are feeling better! ❤️
I've always been intimidated by hair extensions. You made this look really easy and way less daunting than I thought it would be. (I've wanted to try extensions, ALL my friends are OBSESSED with ZALA so i think im now sold to make an order1!)
