@@gilevansinsideout I'd love to hear your analysis of his iteration of Buzzard Song from Porgy and Bess. It's such a gem. Also maybe any comments you have on his use of the string orchestra on the album he did with Helen Merrill would be most welcome. Been a reader of the blog for a while, I really admire your work. Thanks!

Oh thanks for following the blog. Yes I haven't done much on Buzzard Song and nothing on his work with Helen Merrill. I'll keep those in mind.

Thank you Fredrik. Are you going to try it out? Maybe on Milestones Old? What else would you like to see on the channel?

@@gilevansinsideout I often arrange for brass quintet (mostly in a non-jazz context), and often take inspiration from line writing techniques related to the ones you present here. For my next arrangement, I'll try and elaborate on these things! I am curious to hear what a Gil-treatment of sweet, diatonic melody lines like "The midnight sun will never set" or "Polka dots and moonbeams" would sound like?

Oh that is good to hear! Maybe we could do a collaboration of some sort, and harmonize some of those sweet diatonic melody melodies?

Hi. Nice work. I am not clear at to why you chose an F# major as a sub for the D minor...

Oh yep, it’s a II chord to the Emin. So there is a II V i into E minor. Does that make sense? Then the II chord is substituted so it becomes a II7

@@gilevansinsideout Is it common to substitute the minor of a minor 2-5-1 with a major chord? It sounds good, but I am just curious. I really enjoy the series, BTW.

Thank you, Yes it’s common enough. Think of it more as a secondary dominant than a major chord though. You’ll see as you continue the series. Think of how often You’ve seen D7 G7 Cmaj7. Thanks for your question
