I love you so much. Your tips are helping me with my total disorganization. Just a tip. A miter jig vise is an easy more accurate way to file the flat on to the part of the ring to be soldered to the back plate. Easier than eyeballing it in the round ride of your ring clamp.

Beautiful work , questions: 1 what gauge wire do you use for the shank. 2 At which points do you use hard, medium or easy solder 3 most important question, how do you determine your price point. PS : I think your work is calming
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 3 года назад
I choose the gauge based on the disign. I check what looks best, and by that I mean, not overwhelming. I want the ring shank to compliment the rest of the ring, and in this case I wanted something sturdy, but not too big. You use hard solder for all most important joints, and you also start with it if you need to solder multiple joints. To determine my pricing I calculate my time, supplies, media and materials. All essentail costs. I will share more about it my next vlog! And the system I use :)

your away over doing it again at your age its not good for you you should be slowing down haha, i do like those rings really nice work and the stones suit them spot on, see you went for the smiths little torch i find the only fault with them is using the two tanks making it a bit more expensive for not a lot of difference in versatile plus you have to find a bit more space plus more ventilation in using two different kinds of gas, ok going to hut my mouth now you take care keep well keep safe.

Hiya Baia, well you've done it again! By that I mean brought little stars down to us... Have I mentioned how much I love your work? I can't pick out a ring and say, "This one!" I pick out a ring, then another, then a third, then another, but then again another... Then I pick yet another, then back to another... It's too unfair, you make them all too well, and too different... I love them all for their uniqueness! Did you think, or even try letting a bit of light through from the back for those that are translucent? The Opel gems maybe? That hit me when you showed the pairings on the sticky card, the light shining through some of the wonderful gems, tugged at my heartstrings, but I can't buy and wear everything you make, can I? I want to!!! I love your Smith little touch, it's exactly like mine, still in its box. I still need to set up my new desk, and then get the propane tank, and the gauges, and the blowback... and... From my working life as an electrician working with plumbers, you must have the gauges and blowback... they could save your life. Get them from a gas place or large plumbers suppliers to get the best, not the cheapest, the ones you can rely on! Fix the tank to the wall, I'm saying tank as I have the oxygen concentrator instead of an oxygen bottle, but if you have a tank, the same thing, fix back gauges and flashback. You can not be too safe!!! Rant over! You can be the best bench jeweller ever, but if you blow up your studio!!! Honest, rant over! I want to get into stone setting and I've been reading all I can, watching all the YT videos I can. But... There is nothing near that I can find, yet so I took a gamble and looked further afield. I'm reading a book on setting by Scott McIntyre, I love it, and he teaches at Vanilla Ink in Glasgow... A look at their site later and I'm booked in for a weekend course in September. A further look and I'm booked for a wax ring carving day course in July. Wax carving? I watched a video here on YT by another teacher at Vanilla Ink and jeweller called, Lorna Romanenghi, I've spoken of her before and she is very good. It's the first film I've seen that takes you from marking the wax tube to sending it off for casting... To getting it back, stone setting and polishing... I was hooked on trying the carving so a short course seemed ideal. I've just got to book my hotel and... Basia, any recommendations for places to eat? No, not deep-fried Mars bars... I think I've rambled enough... So. Stay safe...Steve...

@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 3 года назад
oh my goodness, thank you so much Steve! Reading your comments always makes my day 💖 Thank you for being so kind and supportive, your feedback is very sweet. Hahaha I know, I do tend to make each ring completely different, which, on one hand is great. But on the other, I know that it complicates the choice haha :)) I agree with you about the gems, they look so gorgeous when the light comes through them, but unfortunately, with this desing, it would be very hard to have them opened on the back. I'd need to cut through the wings and place it all in a certain way and I'm afraid that in this case in particular the result might not justify the amount of work and cost. For other designs however, keeping the open backs would be perfect :)) I'm very excited to set everything up and start using the Little torch! I'm even more excited now, because of all the bits from you and the oxygen concentrator, it makes me feel much more confident to start using it. You are so right, the skill doesn't matter, accidents happen and being able to protect the studio and myself with this piece of equipment make a huge difference! Oh woow! These courses sound amazing! I'd love to go there myself haha :)) And in Scotland, goodness, what a treat 💖 This will be a lovely trip, or trips actually! Hmmm, you might be surprised, but I don't know many good places in Glasgow haha 😆 That's because whenever we had some free time, we would go to Edinburgh! 😆 It's my favourite city. But Glasgow has an AMAZING pizza place, Paesano Pizza on Miller Street. I'm sure there are lots of other great places too, that maybe opened in the recent years. Why you wouldn't want a deep fried Mars bars shokcs me though!! hahaha Have a great day Steve, take care xx
@stephencoster9532
@stephencoster9532 3 года назад
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Paesano Pizza on Miller St. sounds perfect, Italian food is some of my favorite, both to cook and eat. When I was married when I was home I did most of the cooking. Neither of us had done much before so I stepped up and with a few books taught myself to cook. A good pressure cooker made a huge difference to one-pot meals, and so quick when I would come home late from work. I've just purchased a pressure cooker, pots and pans, implements, and herb plants to plant out in a little bed under my kitchen window. But deep-fried mars bar??? Shocks you, dear lady, I'm a bit overweight now, imagine a few lunches and dinners on Glasgow's answer to Stroganoff? I love Stroganoff, mushroom, or beef. Mind you a huge box of marzipan... Wicked extravagance... Stay safe...Steve xx...

Hello 🦋 I always wanted to say to you, firstly your work is beautiful! So much!! Secondly, eventho I'm not a silversmith, I do find your videos very sweet and encouraging to do what you love doing. So thank you for being that kinda stardust ^^ As inwas listening to your video, I just wished to suggest about the photography part. Maybe helpful or worth a little research for defusers or some kind of modifiers. They are very cheap and perhaps can give you a whole different perspective :) also then no need to wait for the sun to hide hihi. Lots of love 🦋 Edina

@stephencoster9532
@stephencoster9532 3 года назад
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing The defuser would need to be very large for the frame to not intrude into the background. At work we typically used a 4'x4' or 1m200mm square frame with different mediums tacked on, then a flag stand or two to hold it. Or an 8'x4', or an 8' square, it depends on how big your background is. It's a whole new world of lighting and shading, bouncing light, excluding light... I got paid a lot of money to know how to do it, plus running the power... To start buying the equipment £££ times £££. Steve...
@ad1ne
@ad1ne 3 года назад
@@stephencoster9532 hmm, perhaps the professional modifiers are expensive. But to block harsh sunlight can also be done inexpensively I believe. Many people use window lights with white mesh curtains, double the thickness if you need to etc. The goal is to cancel the too much brightness, softening it so it doesn't leave harsh shadows. A bit of diy is always fun 🙂🌥
@stephencoster9532
@stephencoster9532 3 года назад
@@ad1ne there is a reason most modifying is done to artificial light, not sunlight, the light from the sun moves around very quickly as the earth rotates, a single small cloud at the wrong time, all are not controllable. Basia decided to wait for the sun to move a few degrees in relation to her subject, knowing British weather you would just get the screen set up when a cloud would move across, been there, done that. Leave the earth to rotate to what lighting Basia wanted and it would last a long time in relation, allowing a long window of settled light, even a cloud would not upset the camera set up too much. A direct sun set up only works for a very short time, been there, done that.
@ad1ne
@ad1ne 3 года назад
@@stephencoster9532 Sure thing 😊 the earth rotates. I was suggesting an option. I've done photography work before. I agree, if you are shooting still then you are not urged to block out the moving sunlight and you can wait I suppose. But I worked on a shooting when I had assistent to hold up a diffusing screen just enough size to block out the sun that was constantly (in 5-10 min sessions)in and out. It worked amazingly. I understand what you are saying tho. Each to their own I guess. Have a good day Stephen 🙂🌞
