How I Use the Model:Cycles Chord Machine
Today I've got my Elektron Model:Cycles and I'm showing you all how I use the chord machine! The chord machine is a very versatile engine that can be used to emulate a sort of rhythm guitarist type feel! By constantly changing the inversion of the chosen chord, you can bring a whole new depth of sound to you track. Enjoy the video!

Excellent vid as always, man. Though I still can't understand why people prefer the Model:Cycles almost 10:1, when compared to the Model:Samples which I find insanely fun and powerful.

I think it all comes down to some folks preferring to work with synthesis instead of sample manipulation. Also the cycles is a self-contained groovebox, but the samples needs a computer to load the actual samples onto it. Thanks for watching!

Hey there! Looking to buy Model Cycles myself! Was interested if the chord engine can only be used on track 6, or you can use every engine on every track (meaning I can use chord engine on both track 3 and trak 6 at the same time) ? I'm new to hardware of this type, so excuse me if I'm missing something!

You can use any engine on any track, and you're free to use multiples of a single engine if you'd like :)

@@FreeBeat Maybe i was hallucinating but i remember someone demoing a way to have a slight delay between the individual notes in the chord. sort of like a rolled chord on the piano.

They might have set chord colour as the LFO destination, you can get a sort of rolling effect than as the chord cycles through different inversions on one trig. Takes a bit of fiddling around to get the effect you're after. You can also obviously create chords, rolling or otherwise, using multiple tracks (one chord tone per track), but to me that seems a bit of a waste of tracks if you're using the M:C as a standalone groovebox

So there’s no way to audition what a particular chord inversion might sound like when making edits to steps? (Like pressing FUNC+YES on Octatrack to hear that specific trig)? You have to guess at what it might sound like in context of the sequence and press play to hear it after tweaking? Extremely time consuming and frustrating IMO? Great video BTW… all of your Cycles vids are super helpful. Thanks.

Can you midi out to trigger sounds with the Chord Machine?

None of the machines themselves actually send midi data, only the six tracks.

But how do you know what notes in what scale and the chord progressions ?

The screen will tell you what note you currently have selected, as well as your chord and extensions. It does require a little bit of music theory knowledge to know what the chord names mean though.

Btw, I hate how in the Cycles, it says M7, which one would think is a Major 7th chord, but it's actually a Dominant 7th. The "Maj7" in the Cycles is the proper Major 7... they should have just put "7" in there for Dominant, instead of M7, as it's pretty confusing.

Yes you can, the Cycles can transmit midi over USB.

Sorry to be an acktually dude but …. M7 isn’t major 7th it’s dominant 7th , so a major chord with a flat 7 . Elektron decided to label it M7 and Maj7 for major 7ths. I think it’s because a lot of people call dominant chords 7ths , further confusing people who tend to use major 7th chords .
