A rather nerdy video this time. Me showcasing some sounds of the Yamaha QY100 that make it sound not too cheesy. Might be useful if you also have an XG enabled device lying around somewhere that's collecting dust.

The two things that surprise me about XG is how little the Yamaha sounds have changed over time, and how usable the stuff from the 90s still is.

Its amazing to me that the QY100 sounds so good, its more than 20 years old right? I would'nt mind the sounds and that reverb in my DAW, holy crap this thing virtually IS a portable DAW, while a bit limited sounds amazing!

Dude, this is amazing! Thanks so much for sharing the knowledge. I've actually discovered the XG format only a few years ago, but apparently it's still very relevant. I love the fact that it's 16 part multitimbral by default, stuff that lacks in all modern synthesizers. But I never knew it could sound so good!

Thanks greatly, you've inspired me to once again try using my qy700 as a sound source. Two questions: 1) are the sound edits you make using your external controller 'remembered' in your qy song files? I'm thinking of trying to get a Keyfax Phatboy or similar, but just wanted to make sure 2) is it possible to share edited voices with others/reuse a good edited voice in multiple different songs?

JayB, thank you for sharing. I downloaded your patch library for the Yamaha S80 but haven't yet installed it. I want to be sure not to delete any patches or performance patches since they are very good also. I could use some advise if you have a minute sometime. I'm interested in the QY unit after hearing you explain things in a couple videos.. I'm curious, is that a controller keyboard you are tweaking parameters with...are those knobs simply changing the parameters on the XG QY?

I'm guessing the knobs are for using controllers ('CC') to er.. control cutoff, res, attack, and release. Decay needs sysex for some reason.

Hi, Jay! I've bought QY100 recently, because your videos inspired me... and I freaking love this little machine. But I have one small issue with it: the changes I make in variation effects for the song, DO NOT SAVE after turning off the unit. For example, I make a dotted eighth note "CROSSDELAY" effect. But after I turn the unit off and on again, the variation effects are reverting to the default delay setting. However, the other two system effects (reverb and chorus) are remaining the same as I set.
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic 3 года назад
This is an indeed weird behavior. Are you sure there is no additional sysex command within the song that selects the variation effect?
@nickcollins9893
@nickcollins9893 3 года назад
@@JayBmusic I didn't look into SysEx commands. Is there some info about how to get into SysEx in manual? Because the first thing I did after starting QY100 for the first time - I formatted the card via CARD menu, there was like 0.01 MB free. And after formatting the card I started to make a little test song. Everything works great, but this variation effects bug is a bit distracting.

I think that I probably checked for some automation data (like SysEx, CC, or whatever else) hidden right at the start of the song. On the newer songs I created with QY100, there was no such problem. Only on Song 1 for some reason.

How do I set different channels to trigger different synths?
@bobcatt2294
@bobcatt2294 6 лет назад
This question would be for the many who are in a stage of confusion of which hardware workstation to purchase. I have been for over 2 weeks looking for a music workstation that is complete with: sequencer, multi-track recorder and great sounds with editor. My budget is $1500.00 USD. I like the Roland keyboard action along with the PX-560 Casio. I think a video from you addressing this (or you may have already) would be of help. The problem is having everything integrated but there lacks other things which makes it a deal breaker for those wanting a DAW-less environment or just too expensive. The option would be to think "components," like you have done. To add to this dilemma, the shipping cost would be prohibitive to return the item, so you would be stuck with a workstation that later you will discover is lacking in areas which are important to you. I am reading about these stories as I go reading reviews.

Alright, another question. I got a QY70 hooked up to my Electone EL90, and it works nice. But I want to take advantage of the Aftertouch functionality. Using monitoring software I've confirmed that it is putting out the aftertouch midi commands, the QY70 appears to be receiving them, it records "CAT" midi commands, but it's not effecting anything. Volume, pitch, nothing changes depending on how hard I'm pressing the keys. Any ideas?
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic 7 месяцев назад
By default aftertouch isn't assigned to anything in XG. However, using SysEx commands you can change that. I don't know the exact commands right now but you need to insert them to channel 1 using the edit function. Maybe I make another video about that one day.
@Daniel32396
@Daniel32396 7 месяцев назад
Ah interesting. I'll check that out!@@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic 7 месяцев назад
Okay, I was able to look now: Edit -> Insert -> XG Exc Multi -> and there you find parameters starting with CAT (channel aftertouch) followed by cryptic letters: CATP-C = Channel Aftertouch Pitch Control CATF-C = Channel Aftertouch Filter Control CATA-C = Channel Aftertouch Amp Control and then the same for the LFO depth (hence the "D" at the end). Set the affected channel and the offset, insert it into the song (by pressing Enter), exit all and play the song so the parameters get sent to the tone generator. After that there should be effect. However, these settings need to be resent each time there was an XG reset (=after every song switch and of course after every reboot) because these settings aren't stored in the QY's actual user interface.

Hey that worked out really well, btw! Thanks! I'm currently making really horrible sounds from having tied the aftertouch to the pitch control. @@JayBmusic

In terms of number and quality of sounds, which Yamaha MU module is closest to the QY-100?
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic 2 года назад
Actually there's none that's _really_ comparable. At least MU128 and later have a newer set of sounds over the precious models (which are closer to the QY70) however, the QY100 still has an even newer set of sounds which you hear especially in pianos and drums.
@jbognap
@jbognap 2 года назад
@JayB Thanks - one more question - when playing the arranger track, is it's MIDI data present at the MIDI output? I'm looking to use it as a scratchpad, so I'm comparing it to devices like the MC-101and MC-707.
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic 2 года назад
@@jbognap Yes, pretty much everything can be sent to Midi out. However, pattern tracks are a bit tricky. Internally they're track 17-24 which can't be transmitted to MIDI, so you can optionally rojte them to channels 1-8 or 9-16, which again means that you can't really use these tracks in song mode.

yoll d Yeah, this is possible. But I'm not sure it's necessary since you can do the same sounds with the CS6x alone.

I have an XG keyboard, but all the XG functionality is kind of hard to access with it. What kind of midi controller can I use to make it easier? I'm a total newb at this stuff.

Excellent question... TBH I don't know of any keyboard that lets you dive deeply into the XG universe. I mean sure, everything you can do with MIDI controller data, like cutoff, resonance, attack, release, portamento... But effect settings or pitch EG and everything are a different topic. Software like XGedit, XG Gold or XGworks are a better option here.

@@JayBmusicI'd love to realtime manipulate the envelopes and everything else on my Yamaha cs1x please elaborate on how to set it up. I'm using ni kore2 sending CC's to cs1x but it's not responding to it.

can someone explain the XG thing to me? Im a total noob. are these the regular QY100 sounds or is there some sort of additional chip installed?

XG is a fixed set of tones and specifications across various Yamaha devices. It has been updated a few times with more modern samples but the story is still the same. So a QY70 sounds exactly like a DB50XG or a MU80. However, there are differences in function and number of sounds, but the core is identical.

@@JayBmusic Okay so they are sounds, but what does it have to do with MIDI? Sorry for the broad questions but i couldnt understand when i researched on google.

@@JayBmusic Like ive heard of XG composing and XG midi files. Do you compose differently for XG sounds? Does midi created in a non-XG unit become XG when you use a XG unit to play the sounds through?
@JayBmusic
@JayBmusic Год назад
XG MIDI files will sound more or less identical across all XG compatible tone generators, no matter if it's a arranger keyboard or a professional synthesizer. That's what makes XG programming so attractive. It's not particularly about the composition itself it's more about arranging, mixdown and choice of sounds. In non-XG units they of course will sound different and maybe even wrong if multiple drum channels are used or special effect sounds and of course dedicated effect settings.

I see these being sold from Japan, do you need a special adapter to run it?

They're available worldwide, not only in Japan. You need an adapter for 9-12V DC. The one I use isn't original either.

@@JayBmusic Ok cool, thanks for the quick reply! :) And thanks for showing the unit in your video. I write a lot for games and this looks like a good step into hardware.
