How I Used the MicroKorg for Ambient Pads

are you happy with the micro?

@@Jaesonbraun I liked it when it first came. Then I started seeing the flaws and almost sold it. Now I can say that I do like it and want to keep it but it wasn't a good first synth. It sounds kinda cheesy sometimes, only has 4 voices and the menu diving is horrible at first but it has something... I enjoy it a lot.

@@Zer0Spinn So would you rather have gone to the Xl version nowadays?

@@Jaesonbraun I have never played an XL. I think most of the menu diving problems are still present on the XL and that's what I would point at as the biggest reason for me wanting to sell my microkorg at first. So I don't know about that. If you're looking for a nice first poly synth I would look at the korg minilogue or the yamaha reface cs. Very hands on, lot's of knob twisting to do and really nice sound for their price. I'd watch some reviews of those and see if they fit your needs.

Oh, it’s truly wonderful for that sort of stuff. Like I said, when I heard that particular layer of the “Stairs Pad,” I knew immediately it was going to play the role of harmony in the track. I couldn’t imagine any other pad in its place. 😊

This is honestly a very difficult question, because I own both and have sometimes used both in the same production. And when it comes to which is better, they both hold up strong on their own for chill and dance music, but even better together. Considering it’s your first, I’ll sum it up this way: if you want the most possible out of a small synthesizer (i.e. various LFOs, digital waveforms, audio effects, vocoding, and an advanced arpeggiator), then you can’t go wrong with the MicroKorg. It was actually my first synth, but I’m still finding new sounds on it. Plus, you can find it in good condition used for cheap. But if you want an analog synthesizer and don’t mind spending $500, the Minilogue is also thoroughly fantastic. It only comes with a delay effect and one LFO, plus you lose the digital waveforms due to it being analog, but it still gives a wide variety of sounds that are perfect for chill and dance music. Others may differ with me in opinion here, and I’d need to know more information about what you want for a first synth, but between the two, I’d go for the MicroKorg based on feature set and cost alone. That’s my recommendation. 👍
