25+ year veteran grognard here. It's crazy to see how talented young people can pick up and then in a few years master a craft that you have been doing for most of their lifetime. I'm still a beginner compared to Emil and many of you talented people. Still, the most important thing is to have fun and express yourself, not to be "the best". Keep painting and don't forget to play with your minis some time as well.

Think the big issue for me in not being able to improve is not painting regularly due to work/life in general. I get to paint 1 or 2 models every 2 to 3 weeks but I have fun doing it which is all that matters 😊

It's funny because copying others works as studies is a fundamental learning tool in most other art mediums. It's definitely something I recommend for mini painters as well because learning theory is one thing, attempting to put to practice with a practical example that is a fully realized piece another more skilled artist has created will teach you so, so much about implementation. Someone can tell you why they used what colour where and what technique they used, you can even watch them put each stroke down, but sitting down and doing it yourself and puzzling things out engages critical thinking areas of your brain and will teach you so much more. definitely something that can really level up your own work. But yes, it is incredibly important to give credit where credit is due; the original artist created something original, you need to acknowledge that and celebrate it. :)

I try to paint something every day, no matter if it's 2d or 3d. I can't get out my colours and brushes and stuff out every day. but, I can get my alcohol markers and shade on paper for 15 minutes in a break. I learn stuff about shades and volumes, but I don't go through the hassle of all the supplies. Maybe this helps you too.
@badfelix007

I don't paint, but a good trick that helps to build habits is to start small. If you give yourself the objective of painting for 10min you are more likely to do it and usually you will end up painting for more than only ten minutes. If you associate painting with an 1h task/job it will be harder to find the time. This is a concept covered in the book "Atomic Habits" from James Clear.

IDK how others would use washes, but I personally find them to be extremely useful if I want to create subtle colour changes in a model, or Nurgley stuff. I mean, for the dirty sickly bunch, starting with a light base and then slapping on thinned layers of Seraphim Sepia, Atonian Camoshades, and whatever else not in the methods of washing did wonders. As for literally everything else, I just start with pure-pigmented paints and mix as I go.

Emil's video about looking at other painters is what got me to go onto Instagram and follow painters - which has definitely helped my understanding of concepts of light and volume. Thanks to the FLGS 'wall of Reaper minis' I have lots of low cost choice so I can pick ones that will require a technique I want to try and copy (Emil's red orc armour for example) or a technique that I want to challenge me (skin, sheer clothing, OSL). (and some of the 'classic' white reaper minis have 'soft' enough details to present their own challenge)

Great video - I'm just starting the journey. I've been collecting wargames minis for 50 years (yes, I'm getting old) - almost all historicals (I like ancient history). I have thousands of unpainted figures in my "to do" pile. I 'hate' painting - partly because I prefer using them than painting them, but also because I'm less than satisfied with my attempts. So I thought, I'll get myself some Warhammer and throw myself at them with a real attempt to learn how to make the most of it (because I don't really care about WH if I mess up, but the sculpts are nice). I figure, if I can get half decent I can then use that in my main interest period and finally make a real dent in the pile of lead I have sitting there. So, I watched a few paint tutorials, I've liked your's, I subscribed, and I'm eager to learn!

Now I have been working on my shading and mixing techniques, watering down my paints some, and so on. My fist small set of 8 orcs I have been working on since I got back Into painting are looking great so far but I feel like it's taking me way to much time, about 2 hours just to do skinper orc, mind you they are orc savages I believe and they are mostly naked, but I still just feel like I'm taking way to long.. Anyways, you and Geek Gaming Scenics are my 2 favorite channel. Thank you for all your help.

Hi Emile. I agree with all these tips but i would like to put more weight on the last one. Commisions. I had reached a level that people recognised my style and wanted me to paint their figures. I was very flattered so found it hard or impossible to refuse jobs. I worked hard doing 15 hour days but the back log still built up. I got more and more customers and was happy. After a year or so i was invited to one of the biggest competitions and exhibitions of the time but realised i had nothing of my own to show. My own figures were over a year old and were not at all competition standard. Also i was painting pieces that didn't please ME. After that i got bored and it was no longer a pleasure to paint. I stopped taking new commisions finished most of the stock gave some back to the owners unstarted and gave up. I no longer paint and of course the level of my last efforts are now way below what is considered good nowadays. So be careful, limit your commisions to a number that you can complete. Give yourself time to do something for yourself occaisionaly. Work hard but not so hard that you have time for nothing else. Evaluate what your time is really worth, count all materials used even if it is minor. Do not undervalue your talent. And most of all know when to refuse. Too big a job with to many pieces, or something that you know you will hate painting, (one or two is ok but not when you dislike all the pieces) In short, think long and be careful. Like all jobs, it is a commitement. Can you do this all day every day without losing the pleasure, i thought i could. If you are sure, go for it, it can bring enormous rewards. Give yourself time off to do something else and don't bury yourself away at your workstation to the exclusion of all else. Most of all, have fun. I dont want to discourage here but make people aware of what can happen. All the best to all who manage to read this to the end.

Amazing advice. One thing I would like to arque with is to change things as a general rule. It is a way to improve but what makes armies work on most cases is concistancy. It might slow your skill progress but makes armies looks better. I usually improve between projects. Army X is done in a specific way then I move to a need one and improve It. But I keep the scheme.

Army Painting yet it was a chore. I had lots of them and it took me a lot of time and effort to complete but batch painting was a skill I learned there. Usually it took me aroung 3 Months a such a commishon to do a 2000 army that started like a total trainwreck of minis. This included stripping, putting together, basing and painting.

Awesome video!! I’ve started my miniature painting journey through your channel. Speaking of copying work, I’m painting an entire Tau start collecting in the same paint scheme you did! Once I’ll finish I’ll be crediting you my good sir!

Commission work straight up killed painting for me. I stopped for 2 years. Being forced to paint something I don't really care about, in colors I don't like, using techniques which I don't enjoy (all of which the client usually specifies) just crushed the joy of it for me. Slowly painting again, maybe a few times a month, but the love I had for it is definitely diminished.

no cat? :O you conditioned me well tough, the like came right away ;) Thank you so much for this! I started mini painting 2 months ago and from my 1st squig to the loonboss were such a jouerney just from a start collecting box! Washes I trew out after the 1st mini, for the same reason. I now prefer dark or black lining so much more. I did something differnt with every squig, troll and grot - this is also such a helpful tip! After staring at minis for so long, I tried my luck at microscratches on my loonbosse's armour - and it turned out cool! :D I'd love to give you a second like just to get youtube to push the tips you give!

I think we forget about the ultimate factor. Time. It's easy to practice day in day out when you have time, but not everybody has that luxury. That being said, your tutorials are amazing to follow. Learnt a lot even working through Lockdown.

Emil that is freaking awesome development on skills mate. I have to admit that I'm more on the side of watching your videos (and enjoy them) than painting which I barely do 🙈 That leads me to not being a good painter at all and dont improve too much. Whether building or converting miniatures or now that I'm learning japanese tend to avoid me to have time to paint. I will try my best to get some time for painting, at least once a week and see if I get better in handling and paint managing at least.
