I completely agree, there are way to many strong generic extra deck monster with little to no downside. Herald of the Arc Light is a great example, it having such low stats makes it easy to swing over it without using anything that could be negated. Every strong monster should have some kind of downside/weakness, this could be something like locking you into certain cards, low stats, hard summoning condition or detrimental effects.
@calvinbarboza
@calvinbarboza Год назад
The issue with extra deck generics is how over the top useful they are. Generic ED monsters should be options to fix certain issues in an archetype to reward creative deck building and target metas. A good example is the new Underworld Goddess link that is a generic Kaiju with some gy hate but costs a lot of materials. Bad ones are Accesscode talker who is just a win condition with removal and utility to chain block.
@MagerBlutooth
@MagerBlutooth Год назад
Coming off the Marvel SNAP meta, it's funny how we're having the exact same discussion over there. The vanilla cards act as the baselines for power at each cost, and the effect cards have more or less power depending on how good or bad the effect is. However, if a card's effect makes it way worth the stat difference, it reduces deck variety at the competitive level by necessity. You either need to use it or use what counters it, since everyone else will be using it.

We all know what the solution is: banlist + erratas (sensible erratas, mind you. Not the ones that kill a card's usage completely). Only then can the new card design philosophy be implemented successfully. The good thing is that any errata of a formerly broken card will be accompanied by a reprint which would eventually make it more affordable, and let's be honest, if a card needed an errata to be balanced, it was never cheap to begin with. Everyone wins. I know it sucks having to revise what has already been printed and which we are all too familiar with, but that's Konami's fault for making these unbalanced designs that won't stand the test of time in the first place. The longer they ignore these issues, the harder it will be for us when they finally have no other choice but to reboot the game or something equally drastic.

Barrone De Fleur, Crystron Halqifibrax, Accesscode Talker, Barreload Savage Dragon, Knightmare Phoenix, Linkuribo, Predaplant Verte Anaconda, Starving Venom Fusion Dragon etc etc are all in-archetype monsters. Sure, Accesscode Talker gets to attack twice and pop a lot in Code Talkers, but he's also the only win condition a deck like Sky Striker's has.

This is just the result of too many years of power creep. You used to have a separation between offense and defense, but at some point those two started to fuse together. Now you have highly offensive monsters, with some of the best defensive effects. It reduces the overall strategy aspect of the game, both in a match and in the deckbuilding beforehand. You never have to think about wanting offense or defense, since you can just have both of them. Unfortunately this is pretty much impossible to fix at this point. The power creep is so ingrained into the design, you can't really take it out anymore. At least not without banning a few dozen cards, which I don't see happening as it would cripple every deck released in the last 5 years or so.

Sadly, they cannot errata atk and def to a lot of cards now randomly. And if the upcoming generic boss monsters have fewer atk and def, the players will go back to the ones that are generic, powerful and with higher atk and def. That is the problem, not with what will come out but with what is already out.
@sterling8389
@sterling8389 Год назад
Cards like Baronne de fluer leave absolutely no room for a comeback. Since it omni negates while destroying, you don't get that card back. Then it can destroy a card on their own turn, so even if you set a monster to maybe even buy you a turn, it can just get rid of it. Then with its massive 3000 attack, it will swing for game with ease. Oh, and it can negate any battle phase related thing as well, since it's omni-negate has no condition attached to it. Let's compare this to Knightmares, another set of generic cards people talk about. I think they are ok. Well...at least not the banned ones. They require a discard, so not all decks benefit from that. It draws a card while co-linked, which rectifies that issue, but co-linking it generically isn't always going to happen and it's arrows aren't the best in the world. It also only has 2300 attack. You can not only get over that, but you also have a better chance of surviving that turn to try and comeback. Even if I still don't win, I'd like to at least try! More generic cards should come with a cost or at least a cost reflecting its effects. Using Barrone as an example, it would come with an effect that states that it *has* to tribute itself during the End Phase while summoning a level 9 or higher monster from the gy. Or for Borreload Savage Dragon, it loses 500 attack each turn. Something like that to balance their power for being able to be made so easily.

The funny part that people forget is that Baron De Fleur is part of an archetype. It's just not good. But ATK and DEF values for boss monsters are pretty standardized at this point and more than likely won't change unless a reboot or rotation happens. 3000 is standard for a boss monster and that's not the hardest thing in the world to run over.
@codystevenson9648

I think the game could benefit from more counter-oriented effects. I had an idea for a kind of extra deck monster that is summoned like a synchro-ritual hybrid by tributing monsters whose levels equal or exceed the new monster's level. The new extra deck monster is summoned with counters equal to its original level, and uses those counters for effects. So a monster can be easy to make, but it only gets its effects a few times and it would also usually come with a stat reduction, like -200 ATK/DEF for each counter removed by activating effects, so the longer the monster is on the field, the easier it becomes to beat it eventually. Some may also self-destruct when they have no more counters.

What doesn't get touched on a lot is how few monsters actually have high defense points. Across the board, defense values cap out lower than attack values. It didn't used to be that way. The 2k defenders in LoB, or Destiny Hero Defender. There's an intentional design choice from Konami for a while now that you should be able to walk over defense position monsters for free, because atk is just generally higher than defense. I think it'd have helped a lot if at some point some designer had said "wait why dont we make it a 1500/3000 monster with an omninegate instead of a 3000/1500." Then at least the board full of negates would have a hard time killing you.

Awesome video Paul! I was actually thinking about a lot of these points too when watching the last video on atk vs def position monsters. Another idea I started thinking about lately was if generic monsters maybe had a limitation on how good the effect is based on if they used any in archetype monsters to make it. Fleur for example gets a pop, negate (quick effect), and a shuffle back. Maybe generically it only gets some of the effects if summoned but if a fleur tuner is used it gets all three. So maybe it doesn't get the shuffle back so it cant be recycled without using fleur tuners or the negate is not a quick effect without the use of a fleur tuner. This way there is a bonus for the archetype that actually uses there own monster. I think the super quantum deck is an interesting design style to follow for this way of thinking.
@RunicSigils
@RunicSigils Год назад
That could definitely work and is exactly the kind of design I was using a couple months back when creating hypothetical Witchcrafter ED support. The good stuff is still good but in general they can either be a lot better or become much easier to summon when you use monsters in the lore related archetypes to make them or have those monsters present on the field or in the graveyard. For example, there are two Synchros, one a more powerful version of the other. The second form is specifically 4 levels higher than the first and gives protection from Extra Deck monster effects if Magistus Zoroa (a Level 4 Tuner) is used to summon it. It's still has a destruction/burn/draw effect so it's still good but even that actually is meant to go with more Magistus stuff. It's all one effect, so you're giving your opponent two free draws if you use it on them - it's really meant to be used with Magistus ED equips for you.

@@RunicSigils I think the trick is balancing what you said about the card still being good but definitely better in its own archetype. I think on the whole, boss monsters need to be made archetype specific, no more generic link 2 extenders like Elf and Halq, or generic lv 8/10 synchros omni's like baronne and Savage dragon. I think the generic beaters like Accesscode and Borrelsword are probably ok for the most part, they're primarily to close out games, though accesscode being able to board clear nearly for free is kind of trash, but he's still very vulnerable to veiler and imperm so it's not the worst thing ever.

Jirai gumo is probably one of the single most well balanced cards ever put into a card game. Massive attack, potentially huge draw back while also drastically changing game states without being too op He's stoppable, but also a huge threat I think if an effect monster has a super high attack stat with a strong effect, there should be a genuine downside to using it or at least make it nowhere near as easy to summon Like, c'mon. The fleur archetype has another synchro that sees nowhere near as much play because it requires the tuner even though it also has a great effect. So should baronne If you actually manage to summon baronne in a dedicated fleur deck you deserve the huge payoff. But since it's so generic, if baronne shuffled itself back into the extra deck automatically after using the negate while only being able to summon fleur monsters from graveyard, I think that would be way better balanced. If you bait out the baronne negate the body is gone. And now baronne has a genuine downside to using it while still being great in archetype Same thing with borreload. If it has such a strong effect, either give it a downside or actually make it require rokket tracer + another dark dragon monster. Or at the very least make it so you have to pop a monster on your field to negate. Just like the rokket archetype specifically enjoys doing and not much else would appreciate There should absolute be some kind of cost with these generic boss monsters

And that is the opposite of what they want. Konami wants to make money, so they make cards that make people want to buy the packs. Power creep is bad for game health but great for sales.

Same with XYZ (2 level 4 (insert archtype monsters) and links should state 1+ (insert archtype monster) i think Generic cards should be completely removed excluding staples. Cards that can be swapped into anything shouldn't be a thing.

Apollousa has a good design principle with decreasing ATK as a cost. That should be a DEF mechanism; low DEF can make things easier to destroy. Like in MTG how toughness determines if creatures die. Slifer has this built in on Summon but uses ATK. Example: card effects that destroy monsters instead decreases its DEF by 2000 and if it reaches 0, destroy it. Card effects that banish monster instead decrease its DEF by 3000 and if it reaches 0, banish it. Sucks to be Link monsters Now passively minor changes in DEF can be difference between being able to one shot a monster, or whether you want to brave an attack instead, which will use it's ATK stats. The only issue are set monsters. Would have targeted set monsters always flip.

Wym "sucks to be link monsters"? Link monsters don't have a defense value, you can't change it to 0 because it's not there, such an effect of banishing a monster when their def reaches 0 would be unable to be activated or just Fail to apply.

generic cards or even most cards in general need more conditions to gain powerful effects because seriously 2 monsters bam negate whatever you want, sure once but sometimes its accompanied by other omni negates or something that maintains advantage, cards today just seem like they are inherently made to power creep and then get swept later by another, everyone remember Zeus or Dragoon the cards that NEED to be banned and even Borreload savage replaced by Barron defleur because she dont need no man like borreload does since he needs a link monster in gy to activate, this game heard slow down as an insult and wanted to go the full 9 yards instead of bring the game to a brisk pace to play and im not talking control decks play i mean you summon big monster ill find a way to bring it down via the core or what was supposed to be core gameplay and attacking over your stats with mine like a Blue eyes to a Dark magician instead of effects that hold you down unless you find a way to sweep lol but i do appreciate playing through boards as well.

I believe that archetype should be primarily locked within itself. There is no excuse for cards like DPE to be playable in every deck... at least make archetype extra deck monsters harder to get out unless your playing that archetype. I'm not trying to kill deck creativity I just don't want to see archetype extra deck monsters be universal when they can easily make universal extra deck monsters. Because it only hurts the players trying to play in their archetype in the end. I'm sure destiny players hated to see their hero cards get banned just because the rest of the world wanted to play DPE...

i don't think it would do much of anything because of one single reason. The battle phase is largely meaningless. Whether a monster has 0 atk or 5k atk it very rarely ever matters anymore. It's not hard to get monsters to 3k atk and it has never been. The problem is how easy it is to either negate everything the opponent does and how easy it is to just wipe entire fields if there is no negates or enough of them present. When i can just negate everything you do or get rid of your entire field do i really care about the stats of monsters on the field? hardly. If something needs to be done is just give generic bosses actual costs to their negation and destruction effects. Immunities also need to be more selective instead of "this card is unaffected by virtually everything!". Give cards real costs and weaknesses and things would actually be balanced. Baronne would be fine if it had either just the negate or the pop or a bit more difficult summoning condition (like requiring more than 1 tuner or non tuner or locking it to the fleur synchron tuner) having all 3 though? no, even then it's just a nuisance i find in most cases when compared to other generic boss monsters.

Konami’s formats (16) 1. Cross duels 2. Speed duels 3. RUSH duels 4. Duel Links 5. Advanced Format (Current format) 6. 1v1 7. 2V1 8. 2v2 9. 3v1 10. 3v2 11. 3v3 1. “TIME WIZARD FORMAT” Retro Formats ( I’m not explaining it bc I don’t really like it bc one part of it) It’s that you can only use cards from the Sets that are from the year of and before that banlist and Rules 2. (Heart of the Underdogs). Restricting what Decks or Cards can be used/played because other Cards can be Controversial in how FAIR It they are 3. (Common Charity Format ) Duelist Can only use Cards/Build decks of Common Rarity 4. (Rivalry of Warlords) (Nobody knows Yet) They’re excited to announced a new program that’s a fun and easy way to introduce duelist to themes they may not have tried/played before (I Added more details to how it could work without being broken and conflicting with game play/mechanics/rulings) 5. (Deck Master formats) - The Deck master begins each game outside the Deck(s). (Either Face-up or Face-Down below the Extra Deck or Main Deck) - Either you can special summon the Deck master when ever you want ignoring its summoning conditions OR how Konami proposed When ever you are able to Normal summon you can normal summon the Deck master ignoring its summoning conditions. (Total 30) Too me are pretty wack but still thought id mention em) Trinity Format Goat Format Edison Format Set/Card/Deck Drafts 0. YGOCardscatalogger Format from the video/spam comment 1. Rarity formats 2. Special summon limit formats 3. Formats With different boards and rules 4. Bonus rules and mechanics to types of cards 5. Character deck list Formats 6. Pure Archetype Formats 7. Each Duelist must Have 60 Card Decks 8. No forbidden and limited list Format 9. Can only play 1 Copy of Each card you put in the Deck 10. Merging Rush Duel and normal YGO cards in Deck 11. “Heart of the Cards” Draw phase Format (You can search and add a single Card during your draw phase instead of Drawing) 12. Normal monsters can be normal Summoned unlimitedly. (Must have the appropriate tribute fodder) 13. (From the OG SHOW) Labyrinth/ Maze duel (would need a new type of Game Mat) (And updated rules) (You keep track with paper). (idk if i gotta spell out everything you do but meh idk i type what i type ig) 19. DIMENSION DUELS. (from the Dark Dimensions Movie) - You must pay Life points Up to the Original ATK Value when Summoning any monsters and those monsters ATK Values are equal to the Number Of Life points you paid for the summon of it. (Cannot Exceed the Original ATK Value) - When a Monster you control is Destroyed by BATTLE you then Take damage equal to that monsters ATK Value on field given by its Dimension Summon. - (Here’s a little rule I thought up that would be cool. When you attack and destroy a monster you gain life’s points equal to the difference of the monster ATK OR DEF value.) 20. Shadow duels (Each player bets a Card and whoever the wins the game/Match gets the Cards that both players Bet) Like how else are you supposed to have a Shadow Duel ?😂 21. Tag duels (Like tag matches in WWE or Mortal Kombat Games) (This can only be Done Once Per Turn on Either of the Turn of each teams Turn) You either Tag out the player Completely like What happens in the games i Suggested and can only Tag Out during the Standby phase. Or You and your partner can Tag out before the Draw phase, End Phase, standby phase, or start of Battle Phase Then either 1. swapping all Cards from the field zones, Decks, and hands, Gy, Banished. (Or 2. by only swapping all Cards in only 1 of these (7)places thats either your Hand, main Deck, Extra Deck, S/T zones, GY, Banished, Monsters Zones) Or 3. You can just Tag out Cards from your field for Cards your Partner Had on their field 22. My Prediction for what could be of the (Rivalry of Warlords format) A format that works like the EFFECT of RIVALRY. A Monster type format. you can only have 1 type of each Monster type in your Main or Extra deck ( or the Field) ( or you can only use one type of monster through out your extra and main deck.) dragon, warrior or wyrm ect ect 23. (Gozen Match format) Attribute Centric format. (Player must build their Decks around 1 Attribute) ( or can only control 1 Attribute at a Time like Gozen Match) 24. My version of. (Heart of the Underdog) half of the monsters you use must be Normal monsters. (This is my idea for what it could’ve been) 25. Extra deck Card Type Centric (You can only use 1 of these to build your Extra Deck (Synchro, Fusion, XYZ, Links) 26. Play with the Main and Extra Decks Face-up (revealed) ( Pendulums go in a pile of their own thats still the Face-up Extra Deck but to make it easy to follow and know what pendulum cards have been sent to the Extra deck zone by the usual means and the zone should be above or below separate from the regular face-down Extra deck that has been flipped Face-up ( revealed) 27. Dice Duels Format. (You can choose to roll Dice at the start of the Draw/Standby Phase to determine the Number of Cards you either. - Draw (Top of Main Deck) - Mill (Top of bottom and either main or Extra deck your Choice) - Excavate and add 1 then put back in any order - by picking 1 of either Tributing, Destroying, banishing, send to gy, Flip Face-up/down, Return(to hand or to Deck) cards on the field(either field) then you must do the chosen action up to the # you rolled.(you pick which one you want before you roll the dice) 28. Coin Toss Format (It could either be once per turn or it could stack for every turn that passes for the turn player during a duel For EX when its Turn 4 you get 4 Coin Flips.) ( i thought up so many ways that I didn’t want to mention them all but Coin flipping could be so fucking fun depending and what you gain or lose from calling the Coin flip right or wrong) (There could be a reference sheet that tells You all the possible advantages/ penalties you gain from calling it right or wrong) (At the start of each turn or in the standby phase you can Call heads or tails then You flip a coin and if you call right then you either - Draw 1 Card - Gain 1000 LP - Inflict 1000 Damage - Banish or Mil 1 Card from top or Bottom yours or your Opponents Main Deck/ or Extra Deck. - Add 1 Card from your deck to your Hand - Look at the 1st Cards on the Bottom and Top of your Deck then Add the Card you choose. (if you added from the bottom of the Deck then the card you looked/ or revealed from the top is placed on the bottom of the Deck. And Vice versa when you added the card from the top then the Card from the bottom will be placed on the top. - Your Opponent Reveals their hand and then you choose 1 Card to either 1. Return it to their Deck 2. Banish it 3. Add it to your Hand 4. Send to the GY 5. Tribute it - Choose 1 Card on Either Field to then apply 1 of these. 1. Tribute it 2. Destroy it 3. Banish it 4. flip it face-down/up(and can either negate it effects or allow them to activate) 5. Return(to hand or to deck) or 6. Non-targeting send 1 card from either field to the GY

29. The Idk format 1. Bring back the Pendulum zones 2. Add a 3rd EMZ in between the other 2 3. Move the Field spell zones to be one on each side of the Regular 2 Emzones. 4. Add a secondary Extra deck thats only for S/T and you can Set each 1 Spell and 1 Trap from the Speed spell deck or add then to your hand. 30. Battle format/ Chess format 1. Monsters in the Main monster zones can only attack monsters in the same column as it’s self 2. Monsters in the EMZ can attack any monsters in the Main monster zones along with the Other EMZ 3. Link monsters Arrow can be used to climb up or down the field creating EMZones on your opponent’s field or your own S/T zones (monsters that are on your side of the field under the opponent’s control can be used as summoning material for link, xyz, synchro, fusion, ritual, or tribute summons) 4. And Link arrows let the link monster attack the zones it points to along with monsters in the same Column (Links can attack your own monsters that it points to) 5. Bring back the Pendulum zones (Cards must be face-up to be attacked) 6. While In the EMZ or main monster zones Pendulum monsters can attack S/T cards/ cards in the S/T zones in the same column as itself. (No damage is delt) And/Or pendulums can only attack an opponent’s Cards in the S/T zones while its been summon to the opponent’s field (in your control) bc the arrow your link monster points to is an opponent’s main monsters zones. (Cards must be face-up to be attacked) 7. Pendulum monsters in the Pendulum zones can attack monsters in the mid field Extra monster zones or Cards ( monster, S/T) across from itself on the opponent’s field in the Pendulum Zones. (This rule can be it’s own format by itself) 8. All monsters have battle protection from monsters with lower Levels/Ranks then themselves and also have Battle vulnerability with monsters that have a higher Level/ Rank then themselves. Meaning they are instantly destroyed after damage calc when battling a monster with a higher Level/ Rank So All monsters have battle protection and instant destruction upon attacks on monsters in this order. Level 12 beats level 11 and below and Rank 1 beats level 12 and below ect ect ect Or levels and ranks are equivalent meaning a rank 4 and level 4 are equal so they beat level 3 and rank 3 and below but not each other. I disagree a little? A lot of archetypes have pretty incomplete engines and need to go through things at least partially generically, and it's not uncommon for it to be possible to go into a monster generically that has some specific tag, and it's just a small cost in the process. I like to see decks that aren't just "All the new names in [archetype]" stapled together. And because of those generic monsters, it means that decks that don't have their own fully developed high end can still compete more w/ the specialized things. Plus, the game is fast enough that archetype specific things need to be small packages a lot of the time - e.g. DPE so...
@RunicSigils
@RunicSigils Год назад
Though it can be, partially generic isn't (usually) the problem but 100% always is. Your complaint is correctly answered by them making those archetypes more complete, not to make totally generic things for money. And make no mistake, that's all 100% generics are - a quick cash grab rather than balancing the game. There's no reason you can't have individual Dark Magician, Plant Zeus, and Melfy Zeus cards. It would both fill out the archetypes and types etc. for you and make them more money in the long run. It would also make the game more interesting because those cards would not be 100% the same cards, they'd be designed to fit the needs of whatever they're meant to go with meaning even though they're "Zeus" they're not really Zeus (who should be limited to being summoned over machines if you're wondering what happens to it). But they only care about the quick cash grab now and you as a player and every investor they have should take issue with that since they do not care about the health of the game or long term gains.

Creativity & Diversity killed by crazy powercreep and the 1-deck format. What is the point of creativity when a "standard" META build can win with auto-pilot? . I don't say you should always win with your creative deck. But, sometimes Standard META or 1-2 strongest deck didn't even give you chance to play. That is the reason why people kill diversity because they want a chance, at least, to play the game.

Most balanced doesn't mean balanced. If someone attacks you and only beats you half to death are we not supposed to care because they beat the friend with you all the way to death? A problem is a problem. It doesn't matter if something else is worse you can tackle both. In this case, there really isn't much to be done unless generics are fixed but there's nothing wrong with bringing up that there are more problems with the game than just generics even if it's hard to suggest more exact fixes until the major stuff is dealt with.
