Josh thank you for the awesome video! I started my first IT job this year after three years working as a math teacher and it’s been such an amazing transition. Your videos helped so much especially in the job application process, you speaking about doing home labs and how to make yourself stand out helped land me in the role I’m in. I think the podcast tip is super impactful, it made for conversation when speaking with employers very helpful since it showed I was staying up to date with current trends. Can’t thank you enough for all the content and am definitely gonna look into going down the Google Security route soon. Oh and CYBER10 !
CYBER10 I really appreciate your hard work and dedication. I agree that getting a google certificate would be a great add to your resume. Thanks so much.
CYBER10 I like your channel I've always worked in IT, but always for and employer. One thing that has always been a burden is not being able or allowed to help people on the side, even for free. I've missed out on a lot of chances to learn in the moment and to get to aspect of interacting with other people when solving problems. This year I've decided to start working for myself and want to get to know people in IT and not just the problem solving from a technical perspective, but also the how did you get here and how can we prevent this from happening again. I've recently been talking to small business owners and there is still a lot they don't know about IT.
Your video came right at the perfect time! I have finished the 7th module of the Google Cybersecurity Professional Cert and will move on to the 8th and last module but I am not too confident in my knowledge of what I learned in the course. Your videos give me so much hope in landing my first Cybersecurity job!
I’m almost there with my google cybersecurity course on course 5 rn. I’m a fitness trainer with no experience in tech but I decided to take the course to protect my organization and the people around me and upgrade to a high pay job.
I’m almost done with the Google course and was looking for that extra boost of confidence next steps! Thank you Josh! Really appreciate your time and effort!
Wow! This is the most helpful video I’ve found thus far because this addresses my concerns about How to start in this field, step by step approach, resume etc
I’m almost done with this course. I am currently an intelligence analyst in the us army. I plan on finishing this course paid for by the army then taking a 3 week in person course to get my sec+. I should be done with these by the end of this summer and by July 2025 is when I plan on getting a job in the Los Angeles area. I’ll probably take more courses in order to overall prepare myself more. From what I have been seeing in the LA area are entry level cyber security analyst roles no less than a $90k starting salary really. Having a secret or Top Secret clearance can also help you land a 6 figure starting salary from what it looks like on LinkedIn. Just got to work for a national defense oriented company. I like the course I’ve been learning a lot and a cyber security analyst role is very similar to my current job just security in the cyber realm and not in physical world. Even with all this the what if it doesn’t work out thoughts still cross my mind lol
Odd that this come up on my feed. Never watched one of your videos before but just completed the course and received the certificate. I am going for the Comptia trifecta and figured the Google cyber cert would be a good fountain which seems like it is. I will work on implementing your tactics to leave public service work and get a foothold in IT. Thanks for the info.
CYBER10 As a Cybersecurity professional with 5+ years, Josh is spot on. Employers love someone who is resourceful and willing to go the extra mile to learn. Love the content man, Keep it up
Josh this just came up. I have been feeling so lost. I needed to hear this... that I am on the right track and must continue with my Qualys and this course Ive started on...😢❤
I can’t even get an entry level job because “you don’t have experience” even though I have a bachelors in cyber security… can’t even get a help desk job.. this field is so irritating
Bruh, thanks. I needed something like this. All I have is the Google Cyber Cert and Bachelor's in MIS (I forgot everything I learned and they didn't push certs or even talk about them)
CYBER10 Welcome back, Josh! I’ve missed your videos in my life these past several weeks! 😂 Love this content, anyone looking to start or advance in their IT career can massively benefit from your tips, I know I have. Question- could you do a video reviewing the updated WGU MSCSIA degree? I finally got my CISSP a couple months ago only to find it satisfies only one course in that program now! 🤯 Awesome to see you back, take care!
Thanks for the warm welcome, I really appreciate it! I'll put that on my list of upcoming videos to make. :) congrats on getting CISSP, I know it's a pain and costs a fat coin, lol
Would you recommend getting a job as an IT Support Desk analyst before applying for Cybersecurity jobs? Or should I focus on getting a CS job with the job I have at the moment (not related to IT or CS)?
Just a heads up. I signed up for the Cyber Security class with Coursera and got to part two. Then all of the sudden it forgot my account. All the work I had done was somehow deleted. This is after I made payments.
New subscriber here just found when i was scrolling to find resources and facts of CS. While every one is recommending so many certs out there.Beginners like me where confused from where to start this.Just wanna know the google cert inculdes what all aspects ? Will this cert gives me atleast an intern or freelancer opportunity ?
CYBER10 Hey Josh :) just wanted to say thank you and that I appreciate your videos, you've answered a lot of the questions I had about going into cybersecurity, especially with following a WGU fast track. I don't have any criticism, partially because I dont feel like I have the authority to, but also because you make great, elaborate content that's detail-oriented and you don't fill your videos with fluff, which I appreciate a lot.
CYBER10 I agree with the resume section 100%. If you don’t tailor or format resume correctly, a lot of opportunities are going to pass you by. Welcome back Josh! -DR
Best video on RU-vid for cybersecurity. You literally gave the roadmap to success. I’m going to implement everything you said on this video. Great job and thank you for keeping it real.
Josh I live your videos definitely keeps me encouraged to keep going. I hate hearing how some people can't find jobs, yet this field is so in demand. All of your tips and tricks are very logical.
CYBER10 😊 I agree what Josh said. Let me add this, "Targeting the smaller jobs will prepare you for higher roles in Cybersecurity. Even with the certificates, you may find it difficult to break into cybersecurity unless you target the entry-level roles"
I am looking to be a network admin/engineer, not so much cyber security. I am doing self study and I put that on my Resume but as of yet no one will even look at me for a basic help desk job...working on transitioning from a automotive technician role in a repair shop to being in IT.
What entry level roles? They don't exist. Been applying for 5 years. Got a ccna, security+, cysa+, third attempt OSCP, azure 900, azure 104, electrical engineering degree from top uni. No responses. Tried applying for SOC, infosec, netsec, pentesting entry level. Im going to cloud DevOps., and hack on the side. Im totally done with the BS. Its clear the cybersecurity industry doesn't know what it's doing, especially when a GRC role gets paid double a pentester.
I'm half way through the program now, I have over 10 years of security and correctional experience state and federal. Videos like this only gives more confident! 💪🏿 Almost finished!!!
While the Google course may be great as per your recommendation, I think the concern is the HR Gatekeeping that tends to require more "well known" certs such as Security+ as well as the fact that there is no proctored exams in the coursera courses.
@@8.24.you’re a cynical clown lol. He said this would help land an entry level job. Not guarantee it. Nothing about how much money you would make. Just help you get an entry level job. It’s almost as if you didn’t even bother watching the video.
Hey Josh, It's great to see you back with new videos! I had my A+ certification beforehand and subsequently purchased your career course. Even though I landed a help desk job before taking the final exam (thanks in part to the course), everything you mentioned came to pass. In my interview, I discussed the labs we covered, and I even managed to negotiate my salary! I'm contemplating diving into your cybersecurity course, but I'm considering first obtaining the CompTIA trifecta to ensure it's the path I want to take. This brings me to my question: Have you ever thought about offering certification courses, like Security+ or AZ-104, AZ-500? Sort of like Mosh does with his courses or Zero to Mastery.
Really love to hear it and see it! Congrats on the job, and I'm glad you were able to flex your portfolio and negotiate salary, haha. I haven't really thought about making full-blow COURSES for certification, but I do make free practice question decks with (usually) over 1k questions. In case you haven't seen them, here are some: CISSP: joshmadakor.tech/cissp Security+: joshmadakor.tech/security-plus
So I have no certs at all if I do Google cyber security cert can I at least land a helpdesk job, I'm unemployed and need income before I can pay for other certs.. or just buy CompTIA A plus to get my foot in the door.
@@Ib90Speaking as someone who has the CompTia trifecta, you would need a decent amount of time to pass A+ even with some prior experience. (I took around 30 days per exam with around 6-8 hrs per week studying)
Hi jhon I am studying BS E-commerce(mix of Business and IT) but I am passionate about cybersecurity. can I get job in cybersecurity without a CS degree? Should I pursue MS in cybersecurity after BS E-Commerce? or should I start self learning and certifications only
Thank you for the this roadmap, I’ll definitely will follow it and will tell you soon the result! I’m just starting my Google cybersecurity course and I’m eager to finish and start working in the field! I fell in love with the field.
I’m enrolled in the google cybersecurity course right now and it is really good for someone who didn’t know anything about IT or cybersecurity I wouldn’t say it’s good for the comptia security+ it’s more hands on and preparing you for what you would be doing on the job. I’m currently on the 7th section of the course there is only 8 so by next week I should be done and have my google cert. I started on august 10th with minimal breaks I had to take couple weeks off for work, but if really put time in should take Atleast 1-2 months max.
Currently in my first year of masters will implement everything step by step as you mentioned in this video leveling up stats, will let you know after 2 years following this has helped me or not. Also i am currently taking cybersecurity professionals course by google in coursera, thanks josh!
Man your timing is impeccable! I literally just got the certificate last week and was wondering where to go from here. I will definitely be putting these tactics to work. Love the content, keep it up!
This was a CYBER10 rated video. I was really intrigued with the interview tips like listening to all the Darknet Diary episodes. Interviews are also something you should practice especially for those that are introverted or get nervous at the interviews.
You can hop right into my course without prior knowledge, but the learning curve is going to be steeper. I might recommend going through google cybersecurity course, or at least watching professor messers security+ videos to get a sense for the basics!
Thank you for the Clear Path for getting into Cybersecurity. I have been looking for a video that will help me Start. Josh you are an amazing Person with dropping all this Knowledge.
Hey Josh, the information you shared is very fruitful, but unfortunately in my current location: Lebanon, I'm not able to find any cybersecurity analyst internship or full time role, so I used all the Keywords I know, optimized my LinkedIn profile, nothing has worked so far. I'm seeking international relocation visa sponsored jobs/internships in the U.S., I guess this is impossible. I'm not legally authorized to work in the U.S./E.U., neither in the E.U., nor I hold American/Canadian/E.U. passport. Although I'm currently pursuing my BSc. CS, and graduate next year, I'm currently pursuing the Google Cybersecurity program, but all they ask for is experience. I check a role at Deloitte internship in Luxembourg, the HRs refuse to give a chance to candidates located outside the job location.
Great video man , I’m currently learning networking basics, Linux, sql and python for dummies along with going through the security+ before taking the course just so I can have knowledge already and save money on the monthly fee then actually taking the security+ as well so I can get the discount since I’m not exactly rushing it and want to soak up the knowledge. Love the channel and definitely going to check out those podcast you recommended!
I get conversion money from Coursera, but def won’t sell something if I don’t believe it’s good. I also go over thorough implementation so ppl actually know how to use it 👍. But technically, google pays Coursera, Coursera pays Impact, and impact pays us
Josh, GREAT video. I’m a mid-level information system professional with a couple certificates, about to graduate with a Bachelors here shortly. I’ve done most of the things you’ve mentioned in the video and I’m about to interview with a fortune 500 company next week. I’m so glad I watched this video as supplement. I never thought about listening to podcasts to sharpen my vernacular and I wish I had this when I was first starting out. You offered a great guide for beginners and I hope to see more professionals out in the field!

CYBER 10 There you are! This man has been missed I need your advice! If I can pass the coarse careers part for Information Technology with no certs how likely am I able to get a job within 2-3 months I’m just transitioning from truck driving to IT
Hey! It kind of depends on the quality of your execution of the stuff in the course, as well as the execution of your job hunt, the type of jobs you're willing to work, and where you're willing to work geographically. If you live year a big city and go wild with your applying and don't care where you work, you can find likely find a job 1-2 months after finishing the course, but it just depends! Just make sure everything is as good as it can be, then when you're applying, consider running through the course again to build up your intuition! This will help when it comes time to interview
It really depends on where you live, but like 40-50k in flyover states, up to high 80s+ in coastal cities if you really have a good portfolio and stuff
I've read a lot that this cert is never going to be enough to get into cybersecurity. I am hopeful but do you think it's genuinely doable to get hired based off of that alone?
You won't get hired off of a single cert, you have to do a bunch of other stuff (which is why I made this video). Please watch it, and please watch this one as well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N-pskzV_WQk.htmlsi=GRGJI5YhoK-F2c_Q
CYBER10 Hey Josh, thank you for uploading for us job seekers! I'm finally on the pathwork of being a cybersec tech. Without your videos and cyber wire, I would be so lost. Keep it up and keep doing you man. Thank you . I will sign up for the google course very soon!
Congrats! You are one of the winners! Josh do you know anyone that acquired a job with a google certification only? It would be a great segment to your channel if you can interview someone that acquired a job with only a google cert. Love your channel by the way. Thanks.
The more I research the more it seems like the big Tech Companies have a severe labor shortage, but continue to make it difficult for themselves to hire employees. A college degree is slow and out dated. At 40 years old I assure you by and large the programs used now will not be the programs in 5-10 years. They want employees to fit a social structure they do not train and is more or less a random coincidence if they find their "like culture" applying. The training courses to obtain the skills they desire are scattered and not specifically designed with a clear order to take them, specific certifications to obtain, and a clearly defined goal. It's all, like most civilian life, chaos simulating order while maintaining chaos in the larger scope of project. Too many choices can lead to a blurred vision when choosing, and allows the opportunity to choose a path that did not yield the specific skills they wanted to find employees having for a specific position they wish to fill. That is my observation of this situation as I continue watching these vids for research and viewing professional courses online.
CYBER10 I agree with this video. Although I haven't been able to land a job in IT or in cyber yet, the steps explained by Josh are definitely the steps I'm taking to break into cyber. I've been lazy about my resume in the past but after watching Josh's past videos on resume prep, interview prep, portfolio building, and other career-related videos, I know this is the path to take. Hopefully, we can all break into cyber together!😢
If you can't jump straight in cybersecurity, start with helpdesk then pivot after 1 year experience and have your Security+. Security+ is a huge checkmark atm.
Josh you are THE OFFICIAL CS JEDI! I'm subscribed and now a VIP. I just signed up for the Google cert and currently working on A+ Cert so I'm in the beginning stages. I will be signing up to the hands on training you have in a few months. Thank you for all you give and do! ❤❤❤
CYBER10 Hey, Josh your videos are what got me onto the IT path. While, I am not totally knowledgeable about cybersecurity, I will say that the content you make hasn't let me down yet. So, I imagine this course would be awesome for anyone who is (1) looking to get into Cybersecurity and (2) going to apply themselves. I'm a current student of your CourseCareer course--so when I say your content is helpful I'm not just pulling it out of my ass. Either way, this might have me checking out Cybersecurity next. (also did you get a new editor or change something?). Thanks!
Hey! Thanks for the nice comment, I'm really glad you have liked the content :). It's good to know about cyber if you're in IT even if you don't get a full-blown cyber job, hehe. and yeah I did get a COUPLE of editors actually. They are absolutely great.
Very impressive video & full of valuable guidance.. Sir,I am a 40-yr old guy with a commerce background with 11 years of experience in banking industry..My career has been stagnant & no job satisfaction is there.. Although I am interested & excited, I am a bit skeptical that can I make a transition to cyber security- considering my background & age.
CYBER10 Josh I just discovered you a couple weeks ago and your content has been crazy helpful. I totally agree with what you said in regards to resume building. Being able to take keywords from a job post and tailoring your resume to it is extremely helpful. I've completed the first part of Google CS cert and finishing up the rest. P.S. Love your Azure lab and although I don't get some of what you're doing in there, the experience of running through it a couple times has improved my knowledge on the "why". Again thank you for the content!
Hey, thanks so much for the comment. I'm really happy to hear you running through the lab multiple times. Doing that has improved my career so much in certain areas. It really builds intuition like you noticed :)
I was laid off a year ago Today due to recession from a SysAdmin/IT Generalist position at startup company. Been contracting on the side to pay some bills and been thinking about going into cloud engineering/aws. Now I've been considering cybersecurity. It's funny because I've had a 3rd kid in that time so I lol'd at the intro 😂 do you think the Google cert and CyberSec is the faster path to a job than going after AWS/cloud engineering? I've had difficulty landing another job with the skills I currently poses. Thanks!
Thank you for the road map and being real about what you recommend after what you've accomplished. I'm changing careers and this will help so much. Thank you.
If I had a company, I wouldn't hire an ex Ubee driver or ex Mecganic, or whatever, with a 6 months certificate, without EXPERIENCE and background studies in IT, Computer Science or Computer Systems in general, to secure my Company, if dorn't know the basics of computers! Most of these graduatea don't even know what OS means 🙈
literally my only issue with starting this, currently living check to check and $50 a month is harsh. while im confident a job in the field would pay the course itself, it would effect my current living situation drastically… i’m currently learning on freecodecamp, hopefully that can help me gain some experience or even score a job
Save a few bucks every week and purchase a month of courserea, then study your butt off during that month. If you don't have money cancel the sub and pick it back up when you get it saved again. It'll save your progress and you don't have to restart the whole course
Sorry about that. What I meant is cheap relative to almost every other alternative. Also I think Coursera has financial aid: www.coursera.support/s/article/209819033-Apply-for-Financial-Aid-or-a-Scholarship?language=en_US
Nope, those are free! CISSP: joshmadakor.tech/cyber/assets/decks/CISSP%20CBK%20Reference%20(6h%20Edition)%20Deck%20-%20By%20Josh%20Madakor%20-%2005.21.2023.apkg Security+: joshmadakor.tech/cyber/assets/decks/CompTIA%20Security+%20Practice%20Questions%20(SY0-601).apkg You just need to install anki and import the decks 👍
Hello Josh, I think what you said about paying just 49.99 for the whole course is incorrect. I was charged month after month by Coursera on the same course until I completed.
Oh I think in the video is suggested completing it in a month to only pay for 1 month. I don’t remember exactly what I said though, so I’m sorry if I said it in an unclear way 😔
I actually just got my first IT job doing the google IT cert. I have completed the cybersecurity cert so hopefully 10 months or a year into IT I can make that transition.
Hey I know this video is kind of old but just by any chance if you seeing I just started university and my major is for a bachelor in cybersecurity, everyone says a agree will improve your chances getting in the field and while that may be true, I know a good deal of people who don’t have jobs in their major. Is it worth my time going through with my major or should I do all this self learning and grind my way there? My job pays for my schooling but my job is ass and I hate working there and would love nothing more than to find another one so this is my reasoning of asking.(I absolutely will stay I’m not scared to work I just hate it here😭)
Thank you so much for the video! I'm on Course 5 of the Google Certification. This is great information. I can start getting myself prepared. It's a whole new industry and career for me! 😊
This might sound stupid but any help would be appreciated people. I want to move out of the States and live in a low-cost country like Mexico or Thailand. Getting this certificate would it be possible for me to get a job internationally making about $4,000 a month or more? I'm not looking at trying to make $100,000 but if I can then that's great but I'm just trying to make about $4,000 a month. Is it doable?
Hey Josh, I need you to help me get in the door. I’m a graduate and recently passed my Comptia A+. I have been submitting applications but no light. I need your expertise.
Hi Josh, nice content. I am not an IT person but doesn’t mean that I don’t fancy IT, though. I’m just curious to ask- how weird is it for a finance background/professional to transition to cybersecurity? Isn’t that 100% crazy and impossible?
Can anyone share that how much pay does get as an entry level. I am asking this because when you switch from other field(like Development) then do you get hike then previous job or it depends on the fresher level?
I have a question Josh. I’m intere in software development. But it’s kind of difficult to get into. Do you think I should stick to software development or just switch to cyber security. I don’t see many jobs that are entry level in cyber security. Will it be possible to give me your insight. Appreciated 🙏
Thank you for this! I'm at Course 2 currently and I was wondering if any of those who finished the course with no degree related to computer or tech, did you get a job for CS? Especially after watching this vid?
I agree wtih you especially the job experience and how to compensate for it with labs. You're the man! So many people use your siem lab video without giving your credit. Great info as always. Thanks Sir! Cyber10
