Man the accountability part is kicking my ass. I’ve been learning for about 3 months and I went from playing everyday to just a couple days a week so fast

next time you watch a youtube video have the guitar in your hands. I normally have a dedicated 30min guitar session where i learn a new concept/song and only focus on guitar. Then i will passively learn that concept or song while studying for school, watching netflix/youtube. If you find your morale low while learning,(it's okay it happens to everyone) it's because you haven't had any new break throughs with playing, which means you're not playing enough. you NEED small consistent victories when learning guitar.

Atomic habits book has a good example for this. Keep your guitar out in the open in a place you spend a lot of time like living room. Increases the chance that it will trigger you to be able to get a practice session in

1.2 years in here, 0.8 self taught and the rest taking lessons. I went into lessons knowing all the basic concepts, all the open chords and started working on bar chords. I think this is the perfect inflection point of taking lessons. I think I would have been bored and frustrated learning basic concepts week to week. Now I'm learning at such an amazing rate and being held back when I need it and being pushed when I need it. Song curation with specific challenges has really been the biggest influence.

Over the years I've tried and given up on trying to learn guitar over the years. A few years ago I went though multiple teachers trying to find the right fit - none of which benefit me because they were focused on their agenda, not my questions. The last teacher literally told me to practice more while playing with his new 2000- Les Paul he picked up a couple of days ago when I asked what I should be focusing on since I haven't seen an improvement in over a month. On a someone what positive note, I've decided to give it another try and found this channel to be more productive than all the lessons, books and what not I have tried in the past.

Great video on a topic I think a lot of beginners are struggling with. I started playing guitar 9 months ago at 47 years old. I tried Justin Guitar, Fender’s learning service and Pickup Music. I have stuck with Pickup Music because they have a distinct curriculum (which I require) and personal feedback built in. And for the more advanced players they have genre/style specific courses. There’s almost too many options which makes finding what works for you difficult, but being patient and willing to try multiple options should get you headed in the right direction. If you want to play the most important thing is to just start playing!

Hey Kevin I have been following your videos, just wanted to give you my feedback. I watched many different channels and just wanted to tell you I really like your theoretical approach. Just for the rythmic (counting 1, 2, 3 ,4) is not something I think I have seen in other videos! You deserve way more views and I am sure you'll get them :) Keep it up. P.S: Do you think you'll make some videos about fingerstyle (strumming/beginner patterns,etc..) ? not sure if it is something you can do! Thanks a lot for the content !

As a self taught guitarist the biggest issue is no corrective mechanism. If I’m learning to sweep pick (which I currently am… slowly 😅) if my technique is bad I really won’t know so I can learn the wrong way.

I have been playing 3-5 hrs everyday, i can play neon, shape of heart, playing god, goat, hey snow and a lot of other songs... So what will you rate my progress?

@@jellyj8194 my practice routine is daily 3-4 hrs on guitar trying to challenge myself into learning hard stuff extremely slowly and then speed it up, I learned abc riff yesterday and slowly and slowly it is sounding good. You have to be always be in the mood to play smtg new and challenginge learn and don't limit yourself sometimes I just randomly hit my guitar here and there try to visualize a melody which may be i want to play then slowly find it and play, adding percussive elements and syncopation just makes it sound better.

Thanks! Enjoyable as always. Can you help explain why I need to learn the minor pentatonic scale (or any scale for that matter)? It's a pretty easy pattern. I can play it. Now what? Why is it important to learn that pattern of notes?
@warboy4004
@warboy4004 4 месяца назад
I’m not the most informed cause I’ve only been learning for a few months but everything is derived from scales. Chords for example are derived from scales. The scale you’re playing can be played all around the neck in different positions. Memorizing scales and the appropriate notes to play will help you build music.
@eaburns
@eaburns 4 месяца назад
@@warboy4004 Yes but for chord building it seems fine to know the scales just on paper to calculate the notes and progressions. I'm assuming there is some other reason that he suggests building muscle memory for playing the A minor pentatonic scale, for example. Like that I'll need to play it or pieces of it often. But I'm curious where/how. So far for songs, I'm mostly just strumming chords, not plucking notes in a scale.
@danieli.9252
@danieli.9252 4 месяца назад
The minor pentatonic scale is just a collection of notes that sound good when played together. The trick (and I haven’t figured this out) is knowing some small sequences within the scale that work. You might hear those referred to as “licks,” or “riffs.” Many solos are built from the minor pentatonic, it’s just a matter of finding them. I don’t always know that practicing the scale all the way up and then back down is super useful, because that isn’t really how you will play it. Do a RU-vid search for “minor pentatonic practice” or something like that, and you’ll find about a million videos, then find the ones that make sense to you.

I've been "playing" for about 8 years now, and you've practically mentioned every issue i've made personally. Accountability is difficult. Learning improper technique, and then unlearning it, is a colossal pain in the ass too. But also while there are endless resources online, vast majority of them are just not good. Either they completely omit important details, which only leads to learning something wrong without realizing it, or they assume you already have a certain skill level, and just don't even bother explaining the concept

Checklist for your technique: Does it sound the same as the online instructor plays it? Does something hurt? Do you feel comfortable? Do you have unneccessary strain somewhere? Does it groove? Then your technique can't be wrong.
@Vern859
@Vern859 5 месяцев назад
Well If you're teaching ABC and 123 doe ray me you can not go wrong. I start my students out 1 4 5 chord progression . Also, learning the notes. You learn the notes on the E string you know them all your just starting from a different letter "note" I notice that the professional guitar teachers dont teach this simple technique. I believe it to be because they are teaching in away that they can get more money out of the students... I teach for free. Everything on the guitar is just ABC. If you make a A chord A shape the next is B one step BC is just half and EF is half. My student lear fast. The hard part is strengthening of the fingers and hands. I see people playing open chords for years and years. Then i show them the ABC thing right up the to 12th fret and their like oh wow i did not even know that. Because there stuck reading music and just playing open chords. I show people this concept that dont even know how play and there like oh wow. Problem is strength to holding the chord down. Then right hand technique might be more important to sounding musical... These poor folks pay thousands of $$ for years and just learn open chords.. I had 10 year old kids jamming to a 1 4 5 progression in there first lesson. They light up light Christmas tree with excitement.. All that theory stuff can come later. . My opinion It works.
