How ICON 3D Printed House Zero

High performance + High end architecture designed by Lake Flato, Built and Fully Owned by ICON who recently raised $185M.
This home near a school and the bustling area of rainy st has an awesome location in Austin, Tx and features some really clever design details. A big one off the bat is you'll notice no holes or cuts exposed for pluming and electrical. This is because all the utilities went in through the slab and roof! The entire home is finished with clear douglas fir for a very high end look. This home is just the first of many in a series where ICON will push the limit of what is possible on their own instead of relying on their customers to find new boundaries and efficiencies for 3D printed construction. The things they learn from these experimental houses will be used for the 100+ homes they hope to build this year many of which will be affordable housing units.

That house is so different it's hard to imagine what it would be like living in it, but the combination of it being so unique, high end and small is beautiful and I can see why you like it. The color of the wood brings such warmth to the house, and that is my favorite wood color for a house interior. I watch the channel of Enes Yilmazer and a few others because I like seeing what architects come up with when sometimes the budget is unlimited. The homes are often ridiculous, spaces too large for a person to feel comfortable. Some of the best design ideas come in boats, RVs and tiny homes, because the design has to be optimized for function, including multi-use of space. That the 3D printing of walls allows different shapes to be made without it costing more is an exciting development though. It's good to see ICON exploring its potential.

This is the first 3-D printed home that I like the texture of the walls - they look like a soft weaving (so I appreciated the way the designer brought in wall hangings and rugs that reflected this!). I have questions - how does one hang a picture in a 3-D printed home? How are the walls repaired from wear and tear over time? Does the texture catch dust? Can you add windows that don't run floor to ceiling? Could you open up the space using half-walls instead of whole walls? I look forward to seeing more of these homes.

I have been following your review since ICON's inception and now has really made progress as new technologies come into play. There are still so many people stuck on stick frame building which cannot keep up with the demand or give the performance economically that will be required by the NetZero requirements in the very near future. This has certainly made my decision to build 3-D printed house and not a stick frame. Even back in 2010 we build a Integra Block house which is so tight, solid and sound proof and then build a stick frame home to achieve this performance would be so expensive, high maintenance and not near the life span of 3-D printed houses. Thanks for the update Jarett!

@chrisgerritsen2376

@@stevepasquarella823 Thanks Steve, I am in Canada and the Net Zero is not far away - The Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act , which became law on June 29, 2021, enshrines in legislation Canada's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. In 8 years, by 2030, new houses have to be NetZero ready and compliant by 2050, not to far away. The issue that is not seen today are the standard stick frame built houses that will need to be retrofitted to meet this standard, not so bad if a house is in need of renovation but not good for new house owners in the years coming up before 2030. I do feel a bit for home owners whom may get caught in the middle as the initial price of a home is expensive already and then requirements for NetZero will compound the expense their home. Just my opinion based on what we know today.

I'd imagine that dying the concrete would actually be fairly easy. Just mix whatever dye into the concrete prior to feeding it into the printer. You very well might have some issues with ensuring color matching depending on the color and size of the home though but you could probably mitigate that by just using two different mixers to pull from to ensure that each one gets the right amount of dye and time to mix in. Be like running two different spools of PLA into the same extruder on an Ender 3.

@@dianevega7077 I'm sorry that my initial comment wasn't very clear. Yes, an individual house gets completed very quickly, but overall the total number of printed houses being made in the world is tiny. I would love to live in a 3D printed house, but currently, they simply are not available to "normal" people. The 3D house are either used to create model homes (such as this video), or tiny houses for homeless people. These are all great uses, but not available to me. I have tried to order a 3D printed house, but the printing companies are just too busy doing their showcase projects at this point. It will be very exciting when there is enough capacity in the industry that a "normal" buyer can just order one.

Me too. Icon is really protective about sharing the trials, research and pitfalls of the technology. Very selective about how they market themselves, which I suppose is probably best for an innovative fabrication technology that is about to uproot conventional construction methods. Although I also wish there was more transparency into the design process with the architects, since I would like to implement this fabrication technique with some of my clients.

Nothing wrong with that all being surface mounted, so if there ever is a problem, you could fix it without tearing a wall apart and rebuilding. Who ever came up with the idea of hiding all that behind walls? A woman, probably, plus I like the industrial/loft look. Also, I hate bending over, so have all the power taps/sockets at waist height or higher, instant partial child proofing since most toddlers can't reach that high.

I saw this company on 60 minutes and am very intrigued by these houses. I also just read an article online regarding another home in Texas that was built with concrete designed with deep grooves to help dissipate heat so that no Air Conditioning is required, even in the triple digit temperatures of Texas. I can't hep but wonder if with the method that the icon houses are built that automatically creates grooves between every layer if this design doesn't provide similar benefits for heat dissipation? Has Icon tested their buildings "R Factor"? I would love to know what this is prior to the "Trades" installing insulation, as I did not hear anything about the inherit "R Factor" of their buildings yet. I would assume the "R Factor" has to be pretty decent with their design and could be significantly higher with double walls where there is an additional air gap between the inner and outer wall. Either way it has to have a built-in value for saving energy which could be ridiculously increased with the proper insulation material, which makes me wonder if Icon has researched the best material/option for insulating their buildings, especial when they are expecting to be building on the moon...

I wonder if at the windows and doors a robot could cut a straight line into the beads so that you can install a window in a straight square opening? Where they have the metal edge for the shower it seems to make sense to do a simple clean vertical cut and stick a piece of metal in there with minimal caulking (potentially in the inseam) to help with the install process. If you did that on both sides you wouldnt have to worry about thermal bridging and if by robot then it could be really precise. Just a thought, it seems that the interface of the vertical connections is the weakest point but this idea could be an option to solve that. I'd be interested to see if frost protected shallow slabs could be used and even basement printing as well. Here is cold canada we typically have basements since we have to be so deep below the frost line.

Smart features or networking functions can mitigate it, but looking at it from a low cost housing solution is there an introduction of other products that current housing don't require for it to function well?

There is one common problem with 3D printed houses. The layering surface on the wall easily attract very hard to clean dust and cobwebs. It needs to be smoothen out.

are the different layers mechanically or chemically bonded? the material cures before the nozzle arrives back at that same spot, so its just the weight of the material that keeps it together?

Excellent presentation, but some critical questions. First, because of the outrageous insurance premium, how is this house reduced in fire risks by having less lumber? Another's fire proofing to a 100% fire proof to eliminate insurance? Secondly, with hurricanes and earthquake probabilities in certain regions of the United States how have you made the structure stronger to the these mother nature forces??? If we can eliminate risks we can reduce home ownership costs after construction!!! Where is your development on construction with apartments or multi-dwelling structures.

Cost? Why don't they talk about cost? At one point he said the back house walls were delivered for $50k for 400 sqft? Yikes.$125 a sqft for just the unfinished walls.....

I build for a living, and I'm still not seeing how this is cheaper than building out of 2x6..... or 2x4 for that matter....with less mechanical issues in fitting it out... What does all that pour-as cement look like when it gets dirty ?

What's the volumetric difference of material of the straight wall design vs the curved, like on that facade? I love the look, but you say cost is the same. But there is a difference between distance in a straight line vs a wavey line.

I'm a 3D printing enthusiast - but I'm conflicted about this project. Icons previous projects have such progressive mission statements, but this one feels like they're reaching into very mainstream/materialistic ideals to gain reputable traction; Which I suppose may be necessary to truly cast (or should I say print) their technology as an industry standard. It's great to see they've taken it upon themselves to test variations in quality, utility supply, and even interior finishes - But for some reason it feels they are still creating "architecture" that feels very traditional, not very progressive, like, at all. Same goes for Cobod's "architecture". As far as I'm concerned WASP has the greatest sense for creating innovative Architecture that actually utilizes this technology in a way that is emergent. They are Actually producing structural pleated walls - not making analogies to waving sheets of paper...

I disagree, big projects like this are important getting started. The best thing is to be well rounded and do it all.

@@automateconstruction Not necessarily. In many cases it is more effective to focus on one or several interrelated areas of research. From the current information available it appears ICON is diluting their focus in an attempt to reach into as many areas of architecture as possible. You can imagine how producing a multimillion dollar home morally conflicts with fabricating affordable housing. And the suggestion that both homes could be comparable in price, with only a cost difference in quantity or quality of material, just isn't currently true. The amount of labor and active monitoring increases significantly with the complexity of these home builds. I just wish they were more transparent about documenting and sharing their research Like WASP is. WASP is truly building with a focused agenda. But I appreciate the conversation and your channel is a fantastic way to share this revolutionary technology.

@@StephenCoorlas Are you kidding about the "...morally conflicts..." crap?!!! Are you suggesting they shouldn't use the technology for multi-million dollar homes?!! Those are the people who can pay for homes to keep a companyloke this running. Those are the people who DESERVE a home! I don't live in a multi-million dollar home, but I'm NOT unrealistic when it comes to how the world works; not some pie-in-the-sky idea about flooding an area with virtue signaling "affordable housing" that quickly morphs into drug infested ghettos. I'm talking mainly about the USA, where it has become abhorrently apparent that the majority of people don't deserve any assistance with affordable housing, which is often necessary to insert them into affordable housing. They also do not deserve public transportation, for the same reason - namely because Americans are too lazy and disrespectful to take care of anything. Hence the reason they don't deserve anything. There are few exceptions, but even then...guilty by association. I'm so grateful I left!
