The ignition system is a crucial component of any gasoline-powered engine, providing the high voltage necessary to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the engine's combustion chambers. In this video, we'll explore the inner workings of the ignition system, including how the ignition coil works, the components of the distributor unit, and the role of the spark plugs in the ignition process.
The purpose of the ignition system is to generate a very high voltage from the car's 12-volt battery and send it to each spark plug in turn, igniting the fuel-air mixture in the engine's combustion chambers. The ignition coil is the component responsible for producing this high voltage. It's an electromagnetic device that converts the low-tension (LT) current from the battery to high-tension (HT) current each time the distributor contact-breaker points open.
The distributor unit is a critical part of the ignition system, consisting of a metal bowl that houses the contact-breaker points, rotor arm, and a device for altering the ignition timing. The central shaft of the distributor is usually driven directly by the camshaft or, sometimes, by the crankshaft. The distributor cap carries the high voltage from the coil to the spark plugs, which ignite the fuel-air mixture.
In this video, we'll provide an animation that demonstrates how the ignition system works, from the battery to the spark plug ignition. We'll also show an ignition system wiring diagram that illustrates the connections between the battery, ignition coil, distributor, and spark plugs. Additionally, we'll give an overview of the parts of the ignition system and explain how each one works together to get the engine started.
By the end of this video, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of how the ignition system works and how to troubleshoot common problems. Whether you're a seasoned mechanic or a novice home mechanic, this video will provide valuable insights into one of the most critical systems in your car.

Sir, great video. I love the clarity the animation brings. How about one on a magneto ignition system, or a capacitive discharge system. Lastly, I would love to see one focused on the coil, e.g., internal connections, output waveform, output frequency.

Bro the capacitor or condenser just prevents arcing when the contact points break by providing an easier path than air does, until the points are far enough to stop arcing (also when the capacitor is full im assuming). The cam head is just timing the spark plug fires. Took me a few minutes.
@galinstan5603

The output of the secondary side of the coil is AC. Therefore, virtually passing through the capacitor. The electrons do not actually pass through the capacitor. However, the energy passes through by virtue of the internal electric field. It is an AC by pass when the points are open. The closing of the points resets the process.

so while designing these such as ignitions to power automobiles, they didn't quite understand the entire principle mechanisms until decades later wasn't it. it's like electron microscopes allowed medical observations to what they were already doing.

Current in a battery flows from negative to positive, not positive to negative. This is a common misconception. To be correct electric flows from a negative ground to the positive side of the battery. All current flows are incorrect, otherwise a decent illustration.

@@jacobfortier4069hook up a battery the wrong way in a car and see what happens 🤣🤣🤣 the literal movement of electrons does indeed flow "backwards" negative on a power source should be called the positive if one thinks of positive as the one that gives and negative takes.

When getting especially technical (at least several decades ago) we discussed the flow of electricity as "hole flow", not the electrons directional force. And incidentally, WITHIN the battery itself--which you directly mentioned--the flow here would be from negative to positive. You might want to consider this anomaly.
@arthurbrown6650
@arthurbrown6650 4 месяца назад
Current is defined as opposite the flow of elections. You are correct electrons flow from negative to positive, but current was defined before we knew this
@galinstan5603
@galinstan5603 4 месяца назад
There is “conventional current” and “electron flow” both are correct when used in the proper context. Remember, it is all theory we create so we can analyze and create circuits.

Remember, voltage to the coil is not battery voltage. It's reduced to about 7 volts by a resistor not shown in the diagram. If your car is running full voltage you will burn the points!

@@omareid2297if the spark plugs are used to rotate the pistons, how can the pistons be used to rotate the camshaft which in turn turns on the spark plugs? This seems like a putting the cart before the horse situation.

The starter gets the whole thing turning just like when you pull the string on a lawn mower you are turning the engine by hand
@larrywhited3070
@larrywhited3070 8 месяцев назад
The starter rotates when the battery supplies voltage to it, via the key and an in-line solenoid (to handle the high current required). The starter when activated then engages the flywheel via mechanical gears. The flywheel is a large diameter gear bolted directly onto the crankshaft, not to be confused with the camshaft. The crankshaft with its offset pivot points is what the pistons are bolted to, but with the necessary rotational movement being achieved via piston rod bearings. It is therefore the crankshaft that makes the pistons move up and down when starting an engine (or back and forth for horizontal applications). Then, once the engine starts, it then becomes the pistons that force the rotation of the crankshaft, which is connected to the drivetrain. Not all engines are designed exactly alike. What I'm describing is the most common application for these older gasoline engines that are becoming fewer and fewer. If you have a 1950 to 1980s era engine (roughly speaking) you'll find the video helpful. Now to your specific question: There is also "linkage" (accomplished in various ways) between the much larger crankshaft and the separate and smaller camshaft. The camshaft has individual lobes that open and close the intake & exhaust valves for each cylinder. (The cylinders are the dedicated housings for the pistons.) The camshaft also via separate mechanical linkage causes the distributor shaft with its own lobes to rotate...hence the answer to your question after a few necessary diversions. The short answer would be that the starter motor is what first forces the lobe rotation within the distributor, but it accomplishes this through a series of other in-line components. After the engine starts, the starter itself is then completely out of the picture. By the way, this was first taught to me in a small-town high school over 60 years ago.

@@omareid2297 you mean the rotation of the camshaft produced by the cam gears. The piston is inside the chamber. lol
