“Back in India, the economy is dumpster fire.” I said that in this video and am getting a lot of Indian bros disagreeing, so … was it fair? People have pointed out two facts, which are undeniably true: 1) The Indian economy is large, and is (or is soon to be) the world’s 4th largest. And 2) in the last handful of years, it’s been improving at a good rate. Yet my “dumpster fire” has some data to back that up. - GNI PER CAPITA: I believe this is the fairest way to judge an overall economy, since it doesn’t allow people to cherry-pick good/bad data. Despite the massive size of the economy - they have 1.4 billion people, after all - on a per person basis, it’s still pretty poor, with a GNI of $2,200 per person. That places it #123 in the world, on par with countries like Jamaica and Namibia or some others I hadn’t heard of. - INCOME DISPARITY: In the world’s biggest country, there are billionaires who throw parties for more dollars than I’ll ever earn, and there millions of people in abject poverty. The last stats show about 140 million people living under $2.15 per day. That’s both improved from the past, and still horrible. - RECENT STATS: Some are improving, but we’re still looking at a 9.2% unemployment rate in June, lowered savings, substandard healthcare, education, labor participation rates, and India still has a yearly net-out migration of about a half-million, which is proportionally small but more people are still leaving the country than entering it. So … is that a good/large/improving economy or still one that’s still Third World, despite being one of the earliest civilizations on Earth?

I think dumpster fire was a bit of an exaggeration. Yes, India needs to improve on its wealth inequality. But when we judge anything we do so based on the past. India was a basket-case (which the Brits thought will be Balkanized within a decade) when it was finally independent. It was staring at bankruptcy as recently as 1990 before it liberalized its economy. A more accurate comparison would be the median income difference between Indians living in the US and Indians living in India... and I guess that what you actually meant to say.

We call a Dumpster fire economy , when Debt to GDP Ratio is 124%. When the nation is in $33 Trillion inFederal Debt. When the time it will take to completly pay the Federal debt if GDP was paid without Zero expenses is 340 Years... An economy which runs by printing money is called Whitehouse Dumpster Fire Economy.

It’s true, India was looted by Muslim and British invaders in the past. It takes time to develop a country. It’s very hard for India to rise because of geopolitics. India is surrounded by the enemies inside and outside. Pakistan gets funding from America, China, and other western countries against India. So many things still going on against India to divide it further by foreign countries. But it’s true Indians encourage their children for study. Indians also respect and follow the law and order wherever they go. They don’t do any kind of jihad.

Btw- education is different and success in abroad is different - by 25 once you realize you got to work on many issues of life - most hardworking people realize their way of doing things and Indians coming from collective cultures - our responsibilities always keeps us on job to excel

Hey Ken great video, but you are committing a slight error. You are inferring that the huge Indian household income is because of values, traditions work ethics etc. You also mention that Indians have the lowest divorce rate of all ethnicities. Well that’s the trick if an average green person earns 70k but lives alone, and the average Indian earns 40k but is always living with a working partner that would make household incomes larger for Indians , which hides a different reality. In reality other metrics do show Indians success but this one could be misleading. For instance it was used to say that black Americans have their average income declined during the last 40 years, which in fact the average income of a black American has increased, but given that the divorce rate has skyrocketed, the household income could have decreased you know ? It’s just a comment, I really appreciate your work . Keep on man !
@ElephantsInRooms

You know, this is a fantastic point and one I need to dig into more, especially for future videos. You're right in that different divorce rates could -- depending on how they deal with divorced parents -- definitely be affected even if salaries were unchanged. Thinking it through, if I divorce my wife, are we now considered two separate families? If she remarries, are the kids considered part of two families? I can see it getting confusing, but is worthwhile to know. I'll definitely look into it. You know, one of the slight bummers about producing these videos is I sometimes -- like now -- get educated better, but only after the video is produced. Thanks Kevin! --Ken

Ok, I spent some time with this and can confidently say: I'm not really sure. The income data comes from the U.S. Census and that's all household based, and I could only find one reference that attempted to break it down by individual. That was Pew, which I highly regard. Even they, though, didn't give me a comparison to other American ethnicities, just Indian vs. Asians in the U.S. And those numbers showed Indians substantially outperforming. According to them, Median Annual Personal Earnings of full time workers: Asians - $60,000, Indians $85,000, roughly the same differences we saw with family earnings, maybe even larger. Again, no national comparison for everyone, though. Those are also round numbers and I couldn't find their source/methodology and I don't know divorce rates for Asians in general here. www.pewresearch.org/fact-sheet/asian-americans-indians-in-the-u-s/#:~:text=MEDIAN%20ANNUAL%20PERSONAL%20EARNINGS%20%28ages%2016%20and%20older%20with%20positive%20earnings%29%20%7C%20%7C%7C%7C%7C So, well, there we go. --Ken

Finally Americans are waking up to the powerhouse Indian talent that has become a critical part of the country. Their hardwork and contribution to developed America is recognised after three generations or more. Good points. What’s missed is that only Indian Hindu are at the top anywhere in the world, as also seen by wealthy American Hindu Lobby catered to by Obama and Trump alike. The crux of this success is the continual ancient Hindu civilisation values in families though distorted gravely due to invasions, genocides and modernism. You’ve extracted the points well on education, math and arranged marriage within families. If you look closely these values are identical with ultra rich generational wealth holding rich families anywhere. That’s because that’s the only way to succeed with stability, passing the benefits down the generations or building up in case of newly poor Indians thanks to Brit’s and Islam induced multiple genocides. Indians have a very strong civilizational memory of wealth and are just trying to get back to where our great grandparents were. Math runs in Indian DNA so that’s a natural. Medicine, law, engineering are culturally revered due to lineage of Ayurveda, Dharm, Excellent architectural genius of civilisation. But the Hindu education behemoth system was cut by the Brit’s and English education imposed which is highly inferior hence the struggling Indians post Brit colonialism. Hence, they all get whatever education they can get by the fragmented British education system setup in 1800s and to avoid corruption of govt that kills opportunities, Indians move for opportunities essentially though reluctantly as Indian food and spirituality is carried by them in their hearts wherever they go. Spirituality is a huge basis for non consumerism, minimalism, karma conscience to do well and strong sense of giving back to those who gave them shelter, ie the countries they migrate to in current context. Teachers are seen as revered sages culturally hence even if current teachers aren’t anywhere near that level, still out of respect, you’ll see some videos going viral of Indian graduates touching feet of American professors who jumps back in confusion lol. Edit: With economically rising India and Indians queuing up to come back to their home country, American politicians are worried about draining Indian talent, hence such videos are becoming the talk of the town. As Trump said "Indians study in Ivy Leagues here and go back to India, create businesses , become millionaires and billionaires making their home country rich. We need to stop the talent and give them green card straight away with their graduation degrees in STEM etc fields". Just wish Americans become kind to Indians who are concentrated in top layer where their peers have no qualms but face racism from larger society. It is evident with Indian standup comedians and others who live with drooping shoulders in fear of being attacked, afraid of breathing to their full capacity, wherever they work among layman Americans. Racism which doesn't exist in India despite being the most diverse country or because of being the most diverse country.

Shame on these guys !! When they show their own countries they will show most modern sides not the dirty streets - people living in the side walks, drug addicts roaming around the street with fierce looks (this is a common sight on the streets of most of western countries). You should not compare indians with anybody else there is no other country in the world. We have many languages, many faiths and many ways of living. Mostly hindu population we are accepting of other faiths and traditions instead of practicing exclusivity in some other faiths which vows to convert everybody to their faith causing friction. Since 1200s we have lived under muslim rule preserving our hindu identity. Then 150 years of british rule. They have weakened our economy a lot. Then after independence we have had almost socalist rule. We did get a good foundation but now much of capitalist outlook. So now we have conditions favourable we are doing better. Since the drying up of Saraswati river indians have shown resilience. Our values teach us to value life give chance to every living creature to live and not take everything to perversly satisfy hedonistic living. The british carved out india and pakistan from the same set of people. One country chose to live by one faith while the other embraced diversity. There are only very little other faith people in pakistan yet the country is full of hindu hate. They are not happy with their islamic identity if they were they would treat their minorities well. But all you get is radical rhetoric. In india people are happy with who they are. Mostly they will strive to make themselves better. In india most of the mainstream media is owned by non indians so it is hard for indian voices to reach western world and are often suppressed. We now can predict how bbc or al jazeera will cover an indian event. Your video seems to be similar take the good things from the indians and trivialize the indians. You should read the note written by Richard Feynman on the indian community in west indies. Atleast he did not seem to have a bias. It is very easy to demean or trivialize indians but very difficult to live like indians to better your self without holding grudges about others.

Compared to many, who dealt with this same topic - you have balanced multiple facets of the issue - yes - being an Indian, for that matter people coming from closed cultures and developing nations and have showed resilience and adaptability since ages - we develop certain traits and this land of opportunity looks like a perfect place to show them where already they were in a lullaby of many things for the past century (after the world war). But that is Half of the story - the rest is more important - you should also cover topics like = Nationals of highest H1B visa frauds; Nationals with highest fake on their resumes, Nationals with highest people involved in real estate frauds; Nationals with least social responsibility - my point is as long as it is 1% to 5% you wont see this - if we become 20 to 30% and busy in only saving and not spending - only making our kids read and not play = and also bring the caste hierarchy like India - what kind of a world and society you will see - that is more important for discussion.

Eg) cutoff for general in jee is mostly near 90-92 percentile and sc/st less then 45 percentile and total 65% seats are reserved and other 35% is not for general but open for others too, So yeah they leave because they are hardworker and wants to spend a prideful life in a notion with better unbaised system. As an Indian born half decade naturalized citizen of the USA, I can vouch for a 100% accuracy of all your points in this video. You sure did your homework. This is also why conservative political leaning should be natural home for Indians but somehow that has not been the case largely, although it is changing as the immigrants' kids grow (example Vivek Ramaswami). We love the USA, our adopted homeland. There is opportunities for everyone if they just apply themselves.

Once again Ken, you are killing it with the reporting. You are able to take a topic like racial demographics, immigration, and rates of success and speak plainly about them. I haven't agreed with every view point you have on this channel, but you have inspired me to research these topics on my own more. Please keep doing what you are doing my friend. One day the algorithm will pick you up.

Thanks so much for this. I've had generally low views, but they're definitely picking up. I re-did all the thumbnails and am paying a lot more attention to that in the past month, with some success, so ... we'll see! In the meantime, the only thing that's kept me going over the last year is optimism/stubborness, and comments like yours. Thanks again, Derek. --Ken

As an immigrant paying taxes in the US for my entire stay here, more than a decade, there are many taxes we pay for but are not eligible for the benefits. e.g. medicare is not allowed for non-citizens, but we sure have to pay the medicare taxes. if anything, the tax laws are biased against immigrants since their benefits cannot be given to them.

Sir you need to correct one information. Most of Indians come to USA are from Middle class background in India and it takes very screw turns to get into middle class in USA. Indians are among the all the foreigners who come to USA reach middle class status at fast rate. You do not find Indians coming to USA from poor, Slums etc. Majority of Indians come to USA are middle class back in India. If you do not have money you cannot be educated.
