I just want to say thank you for the support. Be sure to check out some of the animations located in the description!
it feels like Disney itself has forgotten that their films are for the whole family rather than just children, and that they're starting to treat their whole audience like kids
Which is a huge shame because Walt Disney himself once said the following: “You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway.” C.S. Lewis, the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia, said this, “A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.” Disney flat out rejected those two quotes, which is another reason why they're failing.
@@Trainboy452the narnia books are just as enjoyable now as they were when I was a child. The concepts were fairly heavy at times, and that's what made them work. An all-out war, genocide, all heavy themes for a children's book, but done in a clever way
I actually feel like it’s he opposite, the older generation and their experience with Disney has been keeping Disney alive and Disney hides behind the excuse that their unoriginality is because it’s for kids
Considering their previous CEO, Bob Chapek, actually said in an interview that adults don't want to watch animation, yes, that is exactly what they've been doing. They didn't like that Owl House's success was largely due to teens and adults, and not young children. They pushed back heavily on Matt Braly's desire to make Amphibia a darker series (and Anne was supposed to be 16 but Disney insisted she be 13 to draw in a younger audience). Finally, the video shows the garbage they pulled with Gravity Falls. I'm hoping they'll improve with Chapek gone - I'd assume anything released this year was well underway before he was kicked out - but that remains to be seen.
Seriously, even when something like what happened with Sony's Into/Across the Spider Verse and Alberto Mielgo occurs, there was a creative liberty that Mielgo introduced with his art to Sony. Unlike Sony's attempt to match Disney's standards with films like hotel Transylvania, I hope they learn from the greed they inhabited from making 1-2 sequels with less and less of a reoccurring plot and boring character tropes and preserve amazing stories like the first Hotel Transylvania movie and the spider verse movies
They won’t. Have you see the many concepts from Wish? One example is that the star was originally going to be human, but that was rejected. An artist’s work down the drain and instead we got that Luma Kirby like star in the final movie.
@@JonathanGaetaI swear to god I am going to rewrite the entire wish script just to add the star boy (it would probably be shit if I actually did it seeing as how I have no experience with writing but oh well)
@@JonathanGaeta not only that but we were also supposed to have a villain couple, both the King and Queen were supposed to be evil, but then it also got scrapped in favor of a "villain" who isn't even evil until the plot requires it...
Disney? Mostly all of mainstream animation has been struggling recently (other than Spiderverse and Fiona and Cake). Indie animation has kept on growing and Digital Circus saved us from letting Elsagate being the "only known" indie animated content. I'm very glad that asdfmovie, Sr Pelo and BFDI gave me even more enjoyment now compared to how I seen them before. These are beautiful masterpieces.
Another thing, matpat made 2 film theory videos discussing exactly how disney can fix themselves, a youtuber made a step by step tutorial on how dosney can save their company
You spelled "Disney" wrong on the second time you typed it. Also it's kinda funny how a smaller team can come up with a way to fix their company vs a multi-billion dollar company.
I feel like Disney is going to try to get a indie animation series and ruin it. Edit: I feel like I’m giving Disney ideas… Edit2:Just for clarification I mean that they would try to buy different indie animation series
If that happens, then I hope that either A) the creators will refuse the trap, or B) Disney will reveal that they've actually learned their lesson and give the creators just as much freedom as Glitch Productions gives to Gooseworx.
I'm almost 24, my boyfriend showed me TADC, a show that my 7 year old nephew also likes. Indie animators making stuff everyone can enjoy is honestly so refreshing
The style of Tadc looks kid friendly, but the whole story and the concept behind it is not really kid friendly. So try not to explain to your nephew many details
@@BananaPhoPhilly it is kid friendly tho? Yes it gets dark and has dark scenes and moments but that is quite literally the things disney is being critized for is because they have gone way to soft. TADC is a psychological horror, it will be creepy and unsettling. But I would say its one of the few psychological horrors that kids can actually watch and enjoy. Especially if they are out here playing fnaf
@@expiredmilk763 Eh? 7 is on the younger end, but I was super into Warrior Cats and Rainbow Factory around those years. (At least some) kids around that age crave getting into darker content (stereotypically, that which juxtaposes cute colorful characters with horror). As long as they can engage in a safe and healthy manner (ie having the ability to separate fantasy from reality, + not watching something far out of their age range) I don't think it's bad to let them watch horror. Honestly, TADC is like the perfect media for that. Its garishly colorful "kiddy" setting even leaves it clean of the hard violence and gore that kids would otherwise come upon in their first forays into darker content. I can already see TADC becoming the FNAF of early Gen Alpha.
You're massively underselling just how much of a game changer Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss were for Indie animation. Instead of a brief mention at the start they should've gotten an entire section of the video unto themselves. In 2019, everyone thought it was basically impossible to turn a profit making stuff like The Amazing Digital Circus. The RU-vid Algorithm heavily incentivized frequent uploads. Unless you were uploading one video a week or more, RU-vid would stop recommending your videos to people and your channel would become irrelevant. It was an ill-suited environment for long-form, serialized animation. Then Vivziepop and Spindlehorse came along and started cranking viral hit after viral hit with TV Quality animation and expensive voice talent like Richard Horvitz entirely on an indie budget and released months apart. It's safe to say that without Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss there would be no Amazing Digital Circus or Lackadaisy or Murder Drones.
Yep. Indie animation needs to level up one step at a time, and I don’t like demeaning Hazbin for having fewer views than TADC because Hazbin probably added so many people to the indie animation community that would then go on to watch TADC. They’re all fun and I hope to see more of both in the future.
@@skyesyd221I mean they're not wrong though. Helluva boss was made cause Vivz also wanted a series with a male-lead and something to balance out hazbin, and TADC managed to gain even more popularity due to known people working on it like gooseworx and kovac
This is honestly why I'm trying to get my parents to watch the pilot for Amazing Digital Circus (by strapping them down and making them watch it /j). I felt so refreshed after watching the pilot, and in the back of my head I kept thinking, "I should 100% recommend my parents this. This feels like a brand new golden era of animation, and they *need* to see this at this point."
You might be surprised how receptive they may be! I (37) got my Mom (62) to watch Hazbin Hotel (pilot) & Helluva Boss & she absolutely loves it. Haven't shown her digital circus yet, might be a little too 'abstract' for her taste, but sharing this interest with her is definitely a lot of fun.
The thing with this is that, TADC does feel a little childish if we ignore some of the parts. I showed my mom murder drones (IMO best indie show) and she was bored from it. Like some parents might like that stuff, but I believe that most of them simply wont be interested.
@Cubeytheawesome I totally understand! I'm a one man team myself but I'm also learning so much from the experience. I'd recommend starting off super small then doing more over time!
Me too! I've always got a lot of ideas on my mind. But I have a terrible habit of procrastinating. That only piles more onto my shoulders and makes things more difficult. I've always had a habit of brainstorming potential crossovers, but I'm hoping to do something new one day. I just need to commit to it.
I wish you the best of luck and success for the craft. You're an amazingly talented person with brilliant ideas. Keep up the amazing work and you'll do well in life.🫂🫂
One thing to keep in mind with 3D animations is they are massively frontloaded, a lot of time and effort has to be spent sculpting and rigging a character, but once completed the character can than be manipulated much more freely. So while it will take time to make more digital circus the glitch team wont have to spend nearly as much time creating and rigging characters. This is one of the reasons murder drones is able to have a much larger cast, they are effectively all the same model with a different wig attached them. So adding an arbitrary number of drones to a scene only slightly increases work needed.
It also helps that indie animations are geared towards older audiences a market of adults who enjoy animations wasnt really capatlised by companys like disney. (No adult comedys like family guy dont really count in eyes)
Basically reiterating the video but Disney just needs to put less money into effects and reallocate it into story telling and think tanks for better ideas. All n all, They just need to simmer down on the kid friendly content and add some adult themes that people are enjoying from these "indie" animations
People don't want a dime a dozen toddler toons anymore since they already have cocomelon, paw patrol, and half of Disney+. People are craving *intelligent* adult cartoons and shows nowadays, lol
I think one of their major issues is that big companies are so controlling they stifle the creativity of their artists. Owl house is a prime example of what happens when a big company like Disney is in control of a genius’s creation. Edit: I said this before he started talking about it and he absolute hits the mark 12:00
@@Unfishy_ And that's because Dana fought hard to get as much creative freedom as she could. What we got was the sweat and tears of the poor creator trying to give us a good show. Disney managed to cancel it, but at least we managed to get a great show regardless. Glad Dana left disney tbh, so hopefully she can find a better place to let her creativity go wild.
THANK. YOU. I was thinking this exact thing! The show deserved so much better! If you try and appeal to literally everyone at all times, you're going to appeal to nobody. I feel like Alex Hirsch said it best. I don't remember the exact quote, but when asked who he was animating Gravity Falls for his response was basically "I'm making this for me, it's just disguised as a kids show." And The Owl House was the same.
I usually click off when I hear an AI voice. But I could tell from the get-go that you were passionate about this video and put a lot of effort into the script and the editing, so I was compelled to stay. You had a great message and I stayed to the end. Ultimately this video meant more to me than many voice acted ones on the same subject. Thankyou for defying my expectations.
Idk as an artist I highly value having a certain aesthetic to tell more about the vibe/story of the media. I feel like new Disney movies lack this clear "vibe". It just feels like they're throwing colors and stories together, trying to make make it work. Take the Spiderman movies as an example, the artstyles differs depending on which character is shown, yet you immediately recognize each artstyle as part of the movie.
i couldnt be happier for the indie revolution thats coming, Im literally such a sucker for uniquely stylized things and sick of the 3d disney style, I really wish they continued doing 2d stuff. I just love how indie animation passion projects can exist now, and it makes me so happy to see people getting inspired and making their own stuff
@@aaronyc2011i said i dislike the DISNEY 3d style, nothing against 3d in general but i feel like the bland stlye becoming mainstream really wasnt that great for quirky artstyles. everything was trying to be disney. I think 3d animation is amazing when its used to accentuate like in the new puss in boots or into the spiderverse, or like you said in TADC
Owl house; Is Unique, and Succeeds off of passion Disney; NOPE! PASSION ISN'T WHAT EE DO HERE! DON'T GIVE OUR HIVE MIND A TASTE OF ACTUAL GOOD CONTENT! Former pokemon fan here. Seen this kind of thing WAY too often. It's just that with pokemon it's the fans themselves that do this moderation, marking any competition as a Pokemon Clone.
It’s kind of funny how non-Disney creations are getting tons of success while Disney is hitting new lows BECAUSE it wanted to prioritize profits. Stuff like TADC, Hazbin, Mario, and FNAF weren’t perfect, but they understood their audience and their stories. A super creative project with strong moments can be appreciated despite its flaws or will at least leave an impact on people, but a bland safe creation isn’t going to leave an impact on anyone. I can’t call modern Disney stuff abysmal because it’s not noteworthy enough to BE terrible. You can call Hazbin a terribly paced mess if you want, but you definitely remember it. Mario had almost no plot, but that’s what fans wanted. FNAF was basically all lore, but that’s what fans wanted. When we have creators that listen to their audiences, we get awesome content.
I just want to make a note thay Gravity Falls did not get canceled. It was Alex Hirsch's decision from the start to end the show when Mabel & Dipper Pines' summer break came to an end as that's the entirety of the story he'd wanted to tell. I heard him talk about it somewhere years ago. No hate, just wanted to explain a bit more.
As someone who wants to own an indie animation studio and post animated content on RU-vid, this is amazing to see. I have wanted to make animated projects my way since seventh grade, and a few people worry that I won't make much money if they're independent, but I don't care about that too much. Videos like these really give me more motivation to work on this pipe dream.
Me too! I have a lot of original characters and stories I've made throughout the years since 2014! Although sadly I don't have much to make the passion projects I've wanted:( But one day, we'll get there Just stay determine and hopeful for the future! Good luck buddy!🌈✨💗
One thing I think that makes TADC so popular is because of the colours. They are bright and fun, as they get attention from kids and adults. It’s the perfect blend of two different worlds, and I think that’s what makes people drawn towards it.
Because unlike disney, indie developers have learned. It's not about the amount of writers, but the QUALITY of their writing. Some amazing Indie works have been the product of a singular person doing the writing, voicing, etc.
Thank you for shouting out the amazing indie animation community. I'm developing my indie short Space Cops 24 and it's wonderful to have channels like this shout out amazing indie works. 💙
Not only is Primos a copied vibe, but a lot of the names used for characters have been called out as concerning or offensive and derogatory by a handful of creators in the culture the show should be centered around, you can find plenty of folks tearing the show down for many aspects like that. Funny how they throw a fit about 'chub' but don't seem to fix things when people are outright saying they have an issue with things. And how they threw many fits about Gravity Falls and Owl House despite those being their most beloved shows. It's like they *want* the studio to die at this rate.
Conspiracy theory; during the actors and writers strike a coalition of inner Disney execs started to band together to purposely try to kill the company in order to free art from the death mouse
Since they treat their animators nicely and give a lot of creative power their basically a more Sympathetic company which makes them awesomely Built Different
I knew as soon as I saw wishes trailer that Disney officially gave up, the entire movie really does look unfinished with the 3D characters and the 2D backgrounds. When fans said they wanted the original 2D Animation back they just thought of money again and gave us that monstrosity. I’m so happy to see that indie animation is becoming WAYYY more popular
I watched “the amazing digital circus” and I wasn’t excited but saw all the hype. But when I watched it I was absolutely blown away! I am soooo hyped for the full season because it’s everything I want in a show. I think it shows in its popularity.
I have to say Luca, Soul, and Turning Red were all amazing movies that were completely done a disservice by Disney's marketing team and disney plus. They are original stories that have a lot of heart and are definitely not low-tier pixar movies.
I was actually looking forward to watching Turning Red at the theater but went LIVID when it went to stream when finding out the news. It broke me. Again, I was looking forward to seeing it but then you just restrict it to streaming? Bad move.
I'd add Encanto too. I'm glad someone's talking about them because they're amazing movies, and the writers pt a lot of effort into them. But sadly disney is cutting down writers too nowdays, and uses AI instead.
@@VivianaSilverback AI just sucks. Nothing is going to replace human creativity. Seriously, I've been writing my own tales since the pandemic. It's hard but a fun challenge.
To put it simply, the soul and love for the craft is visually and conceptually taking a toll on the project. People are starting to forget why this medium is so popular in the first place, and if you don't intend to do something new, why even create? Happy that this video is getting so popular, Jahni. Hope to see you going places, you deserve this.
I literally screamed when when you mentioned The Owl House. That’s honestly my favorite show, the representation meant a lot to me and I was so upset when I heard they shortened season 3. You can just TELL which parts would’ve had their own episodes, and you can see how Season 3 had to be rushed and have parts of it cut out because it “didn’t fit the brand.” Disney tries too hard to be family friendly and that includes cancelling ground-breaking representation just because some of the content doesn’t appeal to Disney executives. Like you said, indie animation is succeeding because it actually appeals to what the audience wants and doesn’t strictly fit into the “family friendly” category. Gay demons? Murderous robots on a different planet? Cats who steal alcohol? Someone mysteriously trapped in a digital circus? People LOVE that as it is, but if Disney ever tried something like that it would mostly appeal to the younger audience and not everyone else. The Owl House proves that people DO like gay demons but Disney went ahead and mutilated season 3. Also, again like you said, Disney’s art and stories are getting repetitive whereas indie animation has a really big variety that millions of people actually enjoy. Thanks for making this video!
im so happy for gooseworx. ive been a fan of her work for years and the fact that digital circus blew up like this is absolutely amazing! she was never really the most popular animator in the world or anything, so the fact that this happened was COMPLETELY out of left field.
It doesn't help the fact that movie tickets are no longer cheap and we are in another recession where you have to choose between going to the theaters, or putting food on the table
Exactly. I only watch movies at the theatre with friends. I'm not interested unless the movie genuinely seems good, otherwise we'll just sail the high seas for it instead.
With Digital Circus becoming an overnight hit, murder drones and helvuta boss being very popular along with the rise of the object show Comunity , it’s shocking how Disney is still doing to well
It’s so sad. The marketing of elemental was so so bad but it was a really cute movie. I watched it when it was In theaters thinking it might not be that bad and was pleased. The visuals were great and so was the narrative, it was just the execution.
I enjoyed TADC's pilot the entire time I was watching it. It's great that indie animation online is taking the reins when major corporations like Disney are lacking.
One of the issues I take with major companies is that they always keep blaming the pandemic. I understand that even they suffered during that time but those restrictions were lifted ages ago and....well last I checked _they_ were the ones that had animators, writers, editors, and showrunners in spades. At a certain point, blaming the pandemic doesn't work anymore because at a certain point you're just scapegoating to avoid the fact that other issues are driving down your earnings.
I think Disney is trying to "play it safe" and they have their head stuck in the sand of tradition without introducing innovation or "risks" That is what makes them stagnate.... Animation on youtube can be flawed, imperfect, it can be made by anyone even someone who just does animation as a hobby but those aspects also create the charm they have, it makes them beautiful and unique since the animators and writers are actually putting themselfs into their work and not some decades old traditions that were forced down their throat. They also don't need to fear constant censorship. Animators on youtube are free while Disney animators are stuck in a birdcage of old, unable to take flight. It is a pity but I am also happy for this indie animation renesance as I hope to see more stories be told by everyone, not by a company...
Even Ed, Edd, and Eddy had all of their characters walk in a distinct way. It really brings out the character and feels more relatable. My old friend could find me instantly from a crowd because she said "You have this lopsided kinda walk." I do Also, I think another project I'm excited for is The King David show by Sunrise Productions. Can't wait to see what they have in store.
This was also the best unintentional ad for TADC. Before watching this, i had no interest whatsoever in watching it, and now i actually do. Great points! Edit: I watched it! It was great
I think I know why indie projects are so loved With indie projects like Undertale, FNAF, Digital Circus and Helluva Boss they have heart and soul in them with Disney products nowadays espically with live action remakes their is no soul in that they had before and with these indie products they are made to entertain, tell a story, or just for fun.
Here are at least 5 things I learned when thinking of the difference between Disney and Indie Animation. 1) Theme and Storytelling Indie animations mostly fall towards a more character-driven storytelling, and while Disney does focus on character-driven storytelling, they also convey it through an antagonist who acts as the catalyst that carries out the "plot conflict" of the story. Most indie animations I've seen often relied conveying personal struggles and introspective themes without relying on an antagonist, per se. Though I could also be a hypocrite for not considering other Disney movies that also do that. 2) Method of Visual Media Disney has been known for making movies with a definite beginning and a definite ending, what a movie should be, though I will still point out that they're slowly entering the tv series side of animation through Disney+. However, for most indie animations, I've personally considered them for being known to be for being animated series since it can help fill out a whole range of episodes for plot and character development. Though I'm not trying to insinuate that a movie will always feel "rushed", I just feel like indie animation will always give the writers more time and freedom to influence the direction that the story has to go, in a way that feels mostly natural and that they will find things they wouldn't if they had to make it into a entire movie only. 3) Maturing the content Sure, a lot of the indie animations are targeted to a wider audience, not necessarily including a younger audience per se, but to a certain extent. And yes, I know Disney movies are somewhat limited to targeting a younger audience, it only seems to do so due to its family-friendly content. But in the end there will always be fans who wouldn't have anything else in the world than to see their same old childhood franchise capture the hearts of a new growing audience. 4) Content Filtering And yes, finally, the level of freedom to make whatever you want. Sure, indie animations are known for being diverse and sometimes not being afraid to bypass both unheard and written rules in content creation. But for Disney, I would say there were rules left behind by previous writers and directors that shaped the way Disney creates their movies. I can't say for certain that they are, it's just that I doubt it wouldn't influence the future animation industry of Disney as a whole. 5) The Legacy of Animation While there have been quite a lot of new and upcoming animation studios making indie animations, Disney has had a long legacy and one that probably has been reformed for over a whole century (yes, 100 years is a great accomplishment). But the creative direction is never what it used to be, but don't get me wrong, the animation industry of Disney cannot fully recreate the same vision it used to have. So in the end, the new reformed legacy of Disney does not fail to succeed its own predecessors. It's just that a new variety of indie animation industries will always find their own audience to attend to and I think Disney is already doing a great job doing so, just not in the way you expected.
every since I heard of Alex hirsch’s censorship problems and that the owl house will be cancelled is when I held a grudge against Disney. I don’t really go on Disney + that often anymore (unless I’m tryna watch Bluey or the Owl House) because yes… I believe that Disney is starting to aim for the younger audience than the older. And I makes me kinda sad that Disney isn’t making content that anyone can love.
Honestly, indie animators need to make their own platform in which audiences have more and easier ways to support the projects and ways for the indie studios to help and support each other. Such a platform could have all the pilots for such shows free and options to buy or rent the rest of the series. Subscriptions kind of force studios to pump out more content, so I don't think a subscription model would be good. RU-vid is growing more and more corrupt, placing more and longer ads, locking features behind RU-vid "You had these features before, but now you have to pay for them" ("Premium"), and it is a little more restrictive than it has been in the past.
I feel like any "Indie" thing such ad Indie rock, Indie aesthetic, Indie Animation, Indie games are all going to be a popular thing and blow up on the internet and that big names are going to try to obtain such manner to also blow up and "try" to get relatable characters, As i could see in te trailer for Wish and in the movie Ruby Gillam and Turning Red, all the "teens" all act "quirky" and "unique" but i feel like indie animation actually resonates with every person of any age, Unlike the movies....
This is honestly a really good video and shows later how Disney really does need to get it to act together or they’re going downhill and probably won’t be a thing because there are so many good indie artist and honestly I hope every indie artist animator creator I hope it pops off. They deserve it also I followed you. I hope you get 1K soon.
I’m honestly impressed with the animation industry. It been getting insanely big, and the company’s been getting more advanced with how they make the animation, and make it better. I’m excited to see what the future has for us in the animation industry.
I love this video essay! the writing is solid, and the editing is OUTSTANDING! keep up the work :D! also I hope the best for others who wanted to make a indie animation :], creativity is coming to life again
I wish to do things like that someday, while currently I’ve been working on a fan project based on fnaf, I do hope to explore animation and make a animated series someday.
It says a lot about the current state of Disney when 2 movies by Netflix, one about a shapeshifting demon girl helping a disgraced knight clear his name, and the other about a 100-year old talking iguana (voiced by Adam Sandler) sharing his wisdom with the children of the classroom he's lived in his whole life, are better received/more beloved by audiences and critics than what Disney was hyping up for their 100th anniversary.
Over the years Disney has restricted the creative freedom of its cartoon show writers, refused proper salaries to its talented film animation team, recently cut their 2d staff down to nothing, and refused to celebrate female staff who have saved their films multiple times. In my opinion, Disney has semi-black listed themselves in the animation community. And now new talent is starting their own independent projects/working for non-Disney owned studios, leading to a decline in quality at Disney. Chris Sanders moving to Dreamworks and making some incredible films is a great example of this.
😁😁😁😁 This is how my face looks as I listen to you speak about Disney's decline and the rise of indie animation. Thanks for telling us about "The Amazing Digital Circus."
@@skyesyd221 Are you saying that indie animation is a bandwagon??? That's like saying art itself is a bandwagon. It might seem like a bandwagon for those who don't appreciate the craft and think it a cheap and easy way to make a quick buck, but for those who have genuine ideas for stories they want to tell and are willing to face the possibility that their projects may not get the recognition they crave, it is anything but a bandwagon. Take it from a guy who's done his own independent animation on RU-vid back in 2010.
I think something people are forgetting to mention about Disney, especially in reference to Wish, is that many fans are boycotting the company in solidarity with Palestine. All of the points you made are absolutely true, but it's also important to recognize that Disney is doing particularly poorly right now because of issues many of us have with the morality of the company and the actors they are hiring. Disney in 2023/2024 is lazy, unoriginal, and arguably unethical. Many of us would prefer to support smaller studios made of our peers (younger creators who understand current memes and trends) than greedy studios who already have enough money and who don't support or reflect our values. I've not a care in the world what Disney tries to put out next, but I'm extremely eager to see the rest of The Amazing Digital Circus. The music is great, the characters are all so interesting and lovable, and the tone and humor feel way more relatable to me than anything Disney could dare to release. The one really amazing thing Disney has given us recently (in my opinion) was The Owl House, and what did they do with it? Snatched it away (probably because they hate queer people, which they've already proven in their emails to Alex Hirsch).
Every time a new Disney trailer releases, I just get disappointed. I haven't been excited for a Disney movie in a long time. I think the only movie of theirs I'm actually looking forward to is Inside Out 2, mainly because the first one really resonated with me. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if they ruin that movie too. Let's just say I don't have high hopes.
Indie animations know how to relate and appeal to their target demographic and even non targeted ones, disney doesnt know tf its doing anymore, its being run by uncreative directors or old people that dont know what theyre doing anymore
There’s quite a few indie pilots out there I’d love to see get greenlit. Long gone Gulch has some potential. Hullabaloo is a movie turned mini-series on kickstarter that just released with its first episode. Monkey Wrench is a funny sci-fi comedy that’s still going strong. And there’s still other hidden gems. For those who like indie animation, I recommend keeping an eye on these ongoing projects.
This whole lack of creative freedom problem deffo started in 2018 when Rich Moore left Disney to work on Sony pictures. When the director of Zootopia even goes to the company who made Spiderverse you know they messed up
We live in a world where creative industries are afraid to be creative because it threatens to be a "risk". It is so much easier to take a tried and tested franchise and wring it of all its potential until people get tired of it and then they wait for another 5-10 years to cash in on that nostalgia again.
@@skyesyd221 Still has that indie spirit and creativity, unlike most company produced stuff. Hazbin has heart and soul put into it, while wish has merchandise and disney world in it. Plus A24 leaves a lot of creative freedom, unlike disney which forces you to turn an original idea into cocomelon-like garbage
Good video. I think Disney should take a look at Ghibli studios as well. They are making a movie and have been since 6 years. they should take time instead of just shitting everything out. Beautiful art takes time after all.
There is some hope for Disney though just a couple days ago I hard that soul, Luca and turning red we’re getting rereleases in movie theaters though, it’s prolly too late for that it’s kinda pathetic honestly
This moment in time is reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s when Ralph Bakshi was creating new experimental animation that appealed to adults and Don Bluth (a former Disney animator no less) was curb stomping Disney with films like An American Tail and The Land Before Time.
1:02 I think the biggest character inspiration though was Alice in Wonderland. There are several clear similarities, like Jax (White Rabbit/March Hare), Kinger (Queen of Hearts), Caine (Mad Hatter) and Bubble (probably Cheshire Cat, with his floaty movement and big enigmatic grin). The protagonist Pomni herself is obviously Alice, a confused girl stuck in a wacky, nonsensical world which she tries to escape.🤔🐰🎩🃏
I just found the Amazing Digital Circus like 4 days ago and it's hand's down one of the greatest creations I've ever seen. I don't know how or exactly why, But I absolutely love everything about it. It's mindblowing actually the level of production quality that it has, And then you've got so much supplemental content (ie: they made a whole video of Caine saying Viewer suggestions, Because his voice / character is super interesting, and they're making supplemental content based solely around that, which is awesome -- They also made an entire video for a voice acting competition event thing, And it's got the real voice actors switching back and forth between characters and their real persons, It's just incredibly fun and extraordinarily well put together, and the Animators and VAs have made their own videos on their own channels giving extra content and behind the scenes content as well, which I'm enjoying WAY too much) that even with just the first episode, It feels like there's so much more to explore. It's Incredible and makes me want to aspire to create something that great.
Actually Disney is staying right on brand, Taking other creators ideas giving their own filter on it and then profiting off of it, they were just lucky that some of the first artists were based off of plays/books where the artist have been dead for awhile
I like to shift a bit of the success of indie animation towards the aftereffects of the WAG/SAG-AFTRA strikes. During the strikes, Bob Iger said that giving the writers and actors a living wage (which they can definitely afford) was asking for too much and unrealistic. Let's also not forget that a CEO said publicly that they would only be willing to go back to the table only when the strikers become homeless. The CEOs of all of these major companies - including Disney - showed their ass and proved to the public just how greedy they all are. In response, a lot of people pivoted towards indie animation and projects because they treat and pay their writers and actors well (A24 was the only studio that was exempt from the strikes as they agreed to every one of their demands), they take time with their projects, and they are owned by passionate artists and not giant corporations - making it an ethical alternative from the likes of Disney or Netflix.
The difference is, indie animation actually has a real soul. Digital Circus feels like it has a real message and heart to it, whereas Disney’s shit just feels like boring stockholder stuff that won’t experiment anymore.
12:35 That's quite a valid point. You can see this in various Disney shows, like Star vs. The Forces of Evil, which is basically a Disney adaptation of the "mahoshojo" anime genre (such as Sailor Moon or Minky Momo), and artstyle-wise it looks like it came straight from Cartoon Network. Another example is Disney's Amphibia, which artistically looks like a combination of Rick & Morty and The Simpsons.🤔
It’s funny how shows like Hazbin Hotel & Helluva Boss all get a lot of hate because of Vizziepop, and I don’t see a lot of people talking about The Amazing Digital Circus that much. In fact, it’s nowhere near as popular compared to other shows like with SpyXFamily or My Hero Academia.
It does raise the question, how much of the show's view count is genuine and not botted? Glitch doesn't seem to have done anything to manipulate the numbers, yet it continues to get millions of views by the day with no signs of peaking, especially when their other videos _did_ reach a peaking point.
@@binkyboy448 If it's really that popular, then I expected it too be more well known like with MHA, which it isn't. And is not largely praise like with most animes that I had previously mentioned & now that you've mentioned it, maybe Glitch is using bots for the view counts because think about it.. If the show truly is a success, then why isn't more people talking about it?.. The Owl House and Amphibia get talked about more than off TADC, and those shows are Disney properties. Plus I don't expect much from company channels since they are a hack on RU-vid (looking at you WatchMojo).
Smh I’m so tired of society (in this case, Bob Iger) using the pandemic as an excuse for issues that have been around long beforehand! As I’m a teacher, I see this a lot within the educational realm- drives me nuts!
@@MonthlyDoseOfCringe I just can't believe they are going into the ground like this. Like pulling it together some people have too much power. It happened so quickly. I am going to Disney to work there for a college internship. I just want to see what's going on there. I love the South Park Panda Verse series
@@ExtremeWreck what about the parks? Do you believe they would keep them open or all of it going down? I just don't see that happening they own so much land near Disney it's crazy. Like the gas stations nearby will only sell coke products.
I also think that the TADC visual style is inspired by a more polished glowup of Cheaply-made RU-vid Kids content, which offers a lot of really cool symbolism.
"Go Woke Go Broke" Let me fix this phrase, "GET POLITICAL GO BROKE". Be it leftist or right wing politics, both are bad. Most people aren't political, and only want to have FUN, to escape their reality, ESCAPISM. There's already so many harships we experience and we get very tired of our monotonous and repetitive and sometimes dangerous lives. I could walk out of my home to get to my workplace only to be hit by a car and killed. I want to have fun, shows, tv and movies and cartoons and animes, comics, mangas and Manhwas, music and so on. Are my escapism. They keep me happy. I want to be happy, and im sure everyone else feels the same way, Politics in my Escapism isn't good, i hate it. This is the difference between the Woke and actual good content. Actually good content are entertaining. Woke bullshit invading my escapism isn't entertaining, its preachy and annoying. I became political because of leftist woke politics invading my escapism. Lets hope the right in response to the leftist woke plague doesn't become extreme themselves and make me hate them as well.
Disney was afraid to admit that Elemental was a Romeo and Juliette story because the discourse around it would all be focused on real world racism, so they cowardly let us believe it was more of a Zootopia story than not. Cowardice reaps its just rewards
It's truly quite simple see. Disney ~ Greedy corporate buisness people with no creative drive Indie ~ The complete opposite. People who wanna create cuz that's what they do. And it's pure beauty
Owl house diddnt deserve what it got from Disney. It was basically one of the only good shows left in Disney channel. The story telling was amazing the characters were so likeable and it was all just so perfect. I used to tune in every Friday or so just to see the new owl house episode ( as there was a new one every Friday at the start of every season). But then Disney did what Disney does best and it got canceled because it “diddnt fit the brand” season 3 is literally 4 episodes long and about an hour or so per episode just because they had to finish the story before the show got canceled
Can people who talks about digital circus also involve skibidi toilet too its also another famous series and also people are making crossovers of skibidi and digital together
