I'm flying to Baghdad to learn how its economy and stability are improving, finally. Its young people have big hopes and some of them are refusing to move abroad.

I live in Iraq. Iraq has 30% youth unemployment. 40% of Iraqi children live below poverty line according to UNICEF. Iraq has one of the lowest minimum wages in the region ($200) while being one of the richest in resources. Staggering levels of inequality. Iraq suffers from more hunger today than it did under embargo. Downplaying deep-rooted systematic issues is at the expense of the majority of people. We have to see the problem for what it really is in order to fix it. Neoliberalism has plundered Iraq only benefiting foreign corporations and local mafias. Baghdad is filled with malls, private schools and private hospitals. Yet its infrastructure is crumbling with little to no social service. It gets worst in more rural areas where public schools are made from mud. Political change has to happen. It is the reason behind the 2019 protests. Iraqis will own their resources, kick out foreign monopolies and develop again like they did in 1958. It's hilarious how you only interviewed business owners and upper class people in the richest parts of the capital city.

I met young irakis a couple of years ago and I was amazed at how nice they were, they did not judge or criticize and refrained from passing judgement on anything or anyone, they just said things were complicated, they were young but seemed so mature...., the Iraqi youth does not seem to be hateful, they are not chanting for the death of anyone, there is no hatred in their eyes but hope, it looks like they sincerely want to make the best of their future.

As an Iraqi I first would like to thank you for your nice words. Iraqis love foreigners & love to show their hospitality & generosity. Since we lived under a secular dictatorship for many years, the society is secular in some ways, yet the western media usually focuses on the negative side, the extremists, etc. for a specific agenda. There is a large number of Iraqis who don’t pray 5 times a day for example or those who drink alcohol occasionally, we even make our own local branded beer and wine! Iraqis are less strict & more accepting of others, it is truly a unique society, balancing religion with secularism, although it varies from one city to another. The other thing is that many Iraqis are well educated and were brought up in middle class homes, so traditionally respect, ethics and morals were important in the society (although these are becoming less nowadays unfortunately with the middle class shrinking and the rise in nouveua riche & the poor).

I’m surprised to hear the narrative about the Iraqi Dinar. The Dinar is about to be reinstated and revalued and will have a much higher exchange rate compared to the USD. Prime Minister Al-Sudani and Dr. Ali Mohsen Al-Alaq from the Central Bank of Iraq was just in America last week and they were here for about a week. There were negotiations made with oil/gas manufacturers in Houston, Texas. The reason for making USD illegal in Iraq is because Iraq is cutting ties with America and the petrodollar before announcing the new exchange rate. There is currently a project happening in Iraq where the Dinar will cut the three zeros from the Dinar because the currency will be so valuable, that they have to re-denominate the notes. Lots of great news happening for Iraq and the Iraqi citizens. Congratulations.

The ball is in iraqi people's court. A few macro and micro implementations would change the Iraq for great betterments. 1. Have peaceful and friendly relations with neighbours. This is a must for security and peace in side the country. 2. Do not let the debt go beyond limits. If possible have a balanced budget for 7 years. 3. Put the rural are in pace, specially prepare for climate change. Local water management is the key for Iraq to grow.

If it wasn’t for US sanctions and war, Iraq would still be one of the richest countries in the world-as it was prior to the sanctions that started after the Kuwait invasion. The US set Iraq’s development back by decades. While I disagree with Saddam’s harmful actions in the 80s and early 90s, which also set Iraq back and were also instigated and strongly supported by the US, the reality is after the failure of the (first) Gulf War, Saddam gave up and indicated that he just wanted to govern Iraq in peace (which would have let to prosperity, as well), but the US (and Israel) wanted the Iraqis to suffer, and they wanted Iraqi oil and complacency. All of Iraqi suffering (I.e. millions of dead) and destruction since then is on the US’s hands. That’s what they can “thank” your demonic country for.

Very interesting. I spent a year in Iraq during the “Bush Surge” [2007 to 2008] as an Army soldier. My job was to protect supplies in transit, so I probably seen more of Iraq than most Iraqis. It never occurred to me to revisit Iraq because the infrastructure back then was non-existent. When I was there, 80% of the populous didn’t have access to clean water. I saw hundreds of miles of adobe houses and dirt roads. To see they now have malls is mind boggling. Still, it’s not safe for Americans to travel there just yet. The large Shia population has a strong connection to Iran. I wouldn’t build a summer home there just yet.
