We wanted to give an update on how Bree is doing these days! Jim is also out mowing hay with Bill & Baron!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I used to help my grandfather in the 60's cut hay with a mower like that. But his mower was converted to be pulled a small Farmall Cub tractor. Grandpa drove the tractor and I sat on the mower. We put hay in the hay mall lose. Grandpa had a very small dairy farm and milked his 5 cows by hand. He also worked for the SOO Line railroad on the section crew. I kept my horse at his farm. That's why I had to help make hay.

Jim and Brenda, Your right that the Belgian /Suffolk Punch Cross sucjh as Bree should mature heavier and possibly taller than her Sire Baron. Also i agree with Jim that leading her around the barn yard is enough along with daily handling Bree iwill do fine until Bree is between 2 coming 3 years old. To start ground driving her and move forward from there. Also Jim is ao busy with Duke and Earl's training. Brenda as you get into your mid 70's like i am there are lots of smeels and issues that trigger wonderful memories of years gone by. That's why " Working Horses With Jim " keep my horsey memories alive. Thank You Jim and Brenda Gordon.

Bree is one beautiful filly!!!! Love her flowing blonde mane! But how could she not be a beauty having such gorgeous parents!!!! Worming her last month definitely paid off as she's gained over a 100 pounds!!! Lookin' good Bree❤ And her baby sister will be beautiful too. Someday they will make a gorgeous team! I still can't get over how great Bill and Baron did at the horse pull! I know you are so proud of Baron being this was his first pull! Brenda, down in Tennessee, our strawberries are in their last week probably, and looks like yours are just getting started! I sure will miss them when the season is over. Hope you all have a good weekend...and Happy Father's Day to Jim!

Curly dock is pretty hard to get rid of, especially if you let it go to seed. It gets some pretty deep/extensive roots but you should try to get rid of it if you can in a hay field by digging up as many as you can and not letting it go to seed. The whole plant is edible for people and has some medicinal properties but they can cause kidney stones if you eat to much of them because of the oxalic acid. Best thing I like them for is rubbing the leaves/crushed up stems on bug bites, they really help reduce the itch and take the inflammation out like from mosquito bites or bee stings. Cattle, horses and sheep should NOT eat curly dock. Chickens shouldn't eat the seeds however they can and will eat the young leaves (but chickens are pretty good about not eating things they shouldn't). Bree is looking great!

Every time Bree is taken out is a lesson. Just a reinforcement of her earlier lessons. And she's doing fine for her age. If anything, I would suggest lifting feet every time she is in the barn. Will make any future problems or need to have her feet trimmed so much easier. I did it to my 2 geldings when they were young. I never had an issue when it was time for them to be trimmed.

Well I see Skippy is still supervisor of all the work and I am glad to see him on the leash around the mower. I wish that I lived closer so I could help Jim with the repairs on the mower. I love welding and I could weld tread on the steel wheels for a little more traction. I spent a lot of time on my knees replacing the knives and broken guards on cutter bars. I was very happy to see Lady and the new filly are doing well on the previous video. May the good Lord bless you and your family please keep safe especially on your trip to Lancaster County PA.

Jim, it looks like the sickle are in good shape on the sickle bar. Have you tried top-serrated or under-serrated, I once worked at a sickle manufacturer. I asked what the difference between top-serrated and under serrated is that the under-serrated sickle sections are self sharpening.

Brenda were those mole hills in that planted field you were walking in? You have no need for dirt but I was told that dirt moles kick up is ' sterile ' in that it is free of weed / seed and makes excellent dirt for potted plants because of it. I guess the moles eat everything in it. I'm a person that ended up having to buy dirt. 😢. So when I spot mole hill dirt I get a little excited!😂. Bree looks good. Love her mane. It's fun to see Skippy interacting with his farm family. What was he trying to do with that chicken? 😅 I could watch him for hours. Thank s for the video.❤

Jim, obviously you have the potential for a team of Mares down the road, with Bree and her new sister. It seems that most of your horses over the years, including Andy and Rory, have been males, geldings or stallions. What are your thoughts on a working Mare-team on the farm and logging? I'm partial to working with geldings, myself. Dennis.

Curly dock is medicinal. You might want to mentally mark where that is in the field. Would it help that mower to braze some lines across that wheel? Just wondering if it would give you a little traction. Seems like we need someone making replacement wheels for these old mowers, since no one is building them anymore. Don't take me too seriously, Jim. I try to have a comment on each of these for the algorithm, to help you build the channel, and a question to help keep you from getting "writers block" while creating content every week. We were hoping to come see you at Horse Progress Days, but it doesn't look like it is going to work out.

There are several videos on RU-vid that Jim might find useful on using and adjusting horse drawn mowing machines. Also, I find using a calendar like Yahoo on my computer is helpful in keeping track of items on the farm like shoeing and medication. I can schedule a future date to remind me of what needs doing when and even have it send me an email announcement. A spreadsheet is also useful for keeping track of such things and very good for a garden. There is a learning curve but worth the effort.

Fresh strawberries remind me of one time when Grandma and I were picking strawberries in Nelda's patch, and I asked her why she bent over, instead of squatting down, and she said one day I'd understand. Now I know exactly why! 🙂 I also remember her saying, "Oh my, my shoes are squeaky today" as she bent over and got back up...LOL!
