In this clip, Kelly Slater and Casey Bannon discuss Kelly's health and wellness habits and how he's been able to surf competitively for 43 years. From Mind Game 08 with Kelly Slater: • Kelly Slater: Greatnes...
As an older person who still skies, mountain bikes and does a lot of long distance backpacking the key is having passion for what you do. I have fractured my skull, broken my back in four places, broken knee but it’s the love of my sports that has kept me focused and training like a dog. Most of my friends are pretty much the same. In the winter I live or ski and the rest of the time I live to ride and hike. I also eat mostly a keto diet. I am well into my 60s and still hitting it hard and have a much younger wife, that also helps. Never stop training and doing what you love. One more thing don’t drink and drug, at least not often.
Agree with the drinking, but I smoke pot regularly. I’m in my mid 40s and still surf and skateboard daily, or at least 4 days of the week. Surfing is really pretty easy on the body. You’d think it’d be rough on your shoulders but my shoulders feel great. Can’t say that about my knees. Skateboarding kinda messed them up. No surgery yet though.
@@smelltheglove2038I tore my ACL about 3 weeks ago. This is my first day trying to go back to work. I don't smoke or drink and used to always exercise in some way or another so sitting still has been killing me. I pray my knee holds up today
@@splash-qi5kn over the year where the world went nuts, my company got shut down. I started playing video games because there was nothing to do in winter. That helped me get through it.
@@smelltheglove2038 thanks bud I've never been much of a person to be able to sit down and watch my movies or play video games but I've been considering it I've read 4 books in the past 3 weeks just started my 5th. A cool video game I imagine can be a nice escape
I know surfing is a niche sport, but Kelly should be in the conversation of the greatest professional athlete of all time. At least Top10 even Top5! Next to the Michael Jordans, Pelé, Muhammad Ali, Michael Phelps, Wayne Gretzky... In terms of longevity, there's no discussion, Kelly is no1.
@@charliespaz-way4073 no because loving what you do when it’s something wholesome will raise your brain’s frequency and impact your physical abilities, whereas if you’re sitting around drinking and smoking you’re just making yourself dull. I don’t think Kelly is a health freak he drinks alcohol and eats junk food but his mind is just on an other level.
@@jozzieification probably some truth to that. Kelly is definitely a health freak though. You should check out his Joe Rogan podcast, he does health cleanses a lot.
Love what you do, and you will be carried to health and athleticism. I am only 35 however had 4 neck surgeries in my mid 20s and became 50lbs overweight during this. I was a good strength athlete and decent runner prior to surgeries. Post surgery went low carb then hiking and got back into running. It brought tears to my eyes when i found out some of my doctors were worried id never be able to work after all the surgeries. I first started walking on trails for 1 mile, then 2 miles, then 3. I remember it was an achievement walking around a 6 mile loop pain free. Now ive run this loop in 46 minutes no issue. Love what you do. The love for what you do will carry you on those days you dont want to do things.... Have a great day.
What feels good has made my surfing go from around a 7 to 11/10 just cause I’m not thinking about anything else coming up in the water. Thank you Kelly for sharing what’s going on.
Kelly’s passion for surfing is so inspiring. I’m too old now but oh how I would love to have tried surfing when I was young girl. I know i would have loved it. Thank you @kellyslater for sharing your talent with the world! ❤
I'm an average Joe...lived on the beach in Malibu..including Paradise Cove from the age of 47 till 62...I surfed every day...ate decently, stayed in shape..surfed better at 51 than I did at 41..bigger and stronger and experienced in the water...that's how!
I learned to surf at 42. The key for me was to go to a physio and learn how to strengthen your core. In the mornings i used to be so sore just getting out of bed. Now i do my physio sanctioned exercises religiously for my core, arms, legs and back takes maybe 6 mins before even getting out of bed. No more pain, more flexibility, recovery is faster and easier and as a bonus my surfing has improved 1000%. I’m also more muscular in my upper body and ive lost all my body fat. My bp has improved as well.
Ditto on the sharing. I didn't surf for 10 years and am 53 and just got back to it two years ago. I feel like I've been hit by a truck in the morning and far slower to get to my feet than I would like. My surfing is still there once I do get to my feet but I need this exercise.
1. He has passion 2. He still rips. 3. Super experienced. People do things long enough and lose interest. Not Kelly. He's an inspiration to everyone around his age. Thankyou Kelly!
Nassim Taleb recently said that we need to turn on its head the idea that the older we get, the less we should move. It's the opposite: the older we get, the more we should move to avoid the health problems that come with age.
when I was young (like KS) I felt invincible. I saw the older guys slowing down and struggling and I said to myself, "they're just not trying hard enough and working hard enough...that's not going to happen to me". Well it doesn't work like that I've learned. Still surfing but it gets harder and harder. So you young below 60 bucks...Cut us old guys some slack.
A great friend of mine told me you have from 5 - 56 yrs old to make things really happen, YES you can keep doing your passions after 56 till you're 156, but the bottom line is the body really changes and it's just a part of life. Living here in SD CA and surfing for decades 57 yrs old is when I start to see people drop off from surfing, so my friend has defiantly been right. Thee other thing he told me it's just not the physical thing after 56 yrs old, it's the mental thing, he said that crazy over the top discipline most hard cores have starts to slowly fade, again not a bad thing it's just part of life. I'm here to tell you lol he's right that defiantly happened to me. So it'l be interesting when Kelly hits 57, I'm sure he'll be surfing till he's 99 BUT you will notice a difference at 57. Michael Ho is the perfect example, he's still out at Pipeline at age I believe 64 but you can defiantly see the change, so get it in while you can because you will be surprised like I was on the 'change' that will happen. Peace
If you take care of your body and stay active, age doesnt really impact what you can do. People think of 50 and that is an old man. Kelly is a prime example, but there are a tonne of men crushing at elite level late into 40s...
Tony Hawk still ripping at 55. People didn't do it before, because they didn't think it was doable. Now we know it is. To be fair, surgery in general is much less traumatic now, easier to recover from and holds up better. That's part of it.
The biggest secret to staying healthy into middle age is being successful enough to do what you want to do when you want to do it. We all know what we need to do to stay in peak performance, but it usually comes at a high cost for the common family man, most of us aren't willing to make those sacrifices.
I knew this kid was the goat from the time I first saw him surfing back in the late 70’s and for him to keep going at his age will give others inspiration to keep surfing to as we all get older and for him to keep up with the younger crew isn’t his problem it’s the judging system Kelly still rips on waves but now they look at the air they can get in surfing the new way of surfing to me that’s more skateboard moves surfing always been the flow with the waves as Kelly does it the best in my opinion
I wouldn't put too much emphasis on feelings in your later life, other than the fact that once you realize that you are a gifted athlete especially surfer, you either have it or you don't. We can see this in young surfers who stand out at 4 or 5 years old be the way they have magic feelings.some talents have been manufactured and cultivated, so it's not impossible, but those that are naturally gifted at a young age are revealing a higher connection with all kinds of things. Kelly had it at a young age, like many before and after him. Some people try harder and some just seem to find it effortlessly. That's what Kelly slater was as a kid. Of he ever had moments of failure it was just distractions along the way, and the business world trying to manipulate him.
Kelly is a unicorn, he was just born the best surfer. You could emulate literally everything he does, but you won't come close to becoming as great a contest surfer as he is.
I love corn or tortillas chips , and love bread 🍞. Trying to cut out the chips , replacing them with banana chips, Maraquitas brand from sofla , not salty at all. Also I don’t add of use much salt . But Olive 🫒 oil and black pepper is part of my diet .
Amazing career and athlete but at this point he's still competing because he's got endless wildcards, due to the WSL wantiung to keep him around (draws the fans) Unfortunately he's not actually getting results, recent Pipe (probably his strongest event) being case in point. We love you Kelly but would like to see you retire gracefully, full props for winning the Pipe masters one week shy of 50. That would have been an epic time to announce retirement at the Teahupoo event that year and retire at 50, still kicking ass.
@@chilltime4878 Keep getting your information from morons, dood. It’s a great look. And don’t ever get another tetanus shot. If you ever get bit by a strange animal don’t get the rabies vaccine, either. You’ll obviously be doing the gene pool a favor.
A 50-year old competitive golfer is only surprising if you make the mistaken assumption that golf has anything at all to do with physical fitness. The reality is, if you can stand and walk a few feet, you can golf.
Slater is a physics nobel prize winner disguised as a surfer, one of the most inteligent people i ever had the honor of listenning to and leraning from
Hope he carries on competing if he enjoys it...age is a number...he can still will...keep flexible and strong...keep busy with activities...his strategy is already there....fine tuned...best ever. Work on the air game or acrobatics
I just turned 51 and no way a Kelly Slater but do care for myself and eat clean and long time vegetarian organic food person....but man no matter how young you look and feel your body has a mind of its own. It does deteriorate it really sucks.
Yeah. These super annoying podcast bros want to purport that health is some kind of idiosyncratic formula that requires draconian self discipline. Kelly just said he eats whole foods, exercises, and hangs with friends. It ain’t rocket science 😂
@@petervanmeerem3835 Then you did a shit job of answering the question. His wealth has almost nothing to do with it. Better surfers than Slater, who are also very wealthy and even came from money, dropped off the tour in under a decade. Slater’s mental focus, love of competition, and dedication to health and fitness are the primary factors in his competitive longevity. The money is ancillary.
I love Kelly as much as any surfer my man, dont get your knickers in a twist. I was merely humorously responding to the age old question: How do people with lots of money stay so healthy?? In a time where filling my shopping trolley with organic produce means I cant pay the rent, the answer is fairly obvious, mostly. Of course being quite probably the biggest talent in surfing of all time and probably future has a lot more to do with it than organic produce, but in these times clickbaity titles asking how rich people manage to stay so healthy deserve ridicule.@@shacktime
Pro tip: It ain't the corn that he is allergic to.. its the GMO.. it's the glyphosate. Natural, organic, untouched corn like our ancestors ate would be just fine. Anyone else find his answers quite vague? We know he's into all sorts of health modalities that clearly make a huge difference, but he's not really going into them. Barely touching on them. Being unjabbed also helps a lot doesn't it ;)
Wasn't corn itself invented? It can't survive in the wild and the grain it came from, tenosinte, was inedible. You can definitely be allergic to corn, and can be allergic to most natural things.
Interviewer says "you've been healthy for a long time...." Probably needs to research his subject better... Love that Kelly clears his throat as interviewer starts to go down that road. Aside from his feet and the obvious ribs, look into his back too.
To be able to be on tour at that age is considered "healthy for a long time". No one else did it. Wear + tear / Injuries are part of doing any sport for a very long period of time.
yea apparently he had/has scoliosis. My doctor 20 years ago took a a chest X-ray and seemed to think I has scoliosis as well. In the best shape of my life at 45
Im guessing he still needs money, perhaps due to his failed bizness adventures. He is caught up in the surfing comp grind where others younger than him like Rob Machado gave it up and Retired long ago. Surfing is a freedom of expression sport, not a competitive sport for the true surf riders.😊
@@ryancuda45 The wave isn’t nearly as small as you think; my man. Almost all my friends have surfed it and a good friend of mine works there. It’s a bigger, heavier, and trickier wave to surf than it looks.
@@shacktime i paddle into 15 ft chopes and cloudbreak the thunder and greenbush lances right and stuff. that wave is pinner to me. but thats just my opinion and carries no weight or value haha. im about to catch a flight to pipe/ gotta catch em all
u can have KS, his surfing looks robotic to me & militant. I don’t watch UFC & I don’t want to watch UFC LOOKING FOOLS surf. Derek Ho was still shredding Pipeline at 55. Derek all day on a board. Derek called KS the greatest & an even greater person. That’s humble pie. KS is flash. Derek Ho is riding a wave. Derek’s take offs are THE SICKEST. KS, Shaun Tomson, they’re like hyper NFL linebacker out there visual noise.
How stupidly age-ist is that title? What has anyone’s age got to with anything. I’m 73 and still surfing. Kelly is still only a puppy compared to some of us out in the waves. 🏄♂️🦘
Yeah but you're not competing at an international level with late teens, early twenty each olds. It's one thing to surf until the day you die and another to keep yourself in good enough shape to compete with the best until the day you die.
@@guitardivesmall You are missing the point. A 51 year old or older is capable of competing at any sport if his or her body stays healthy. It’s the stupid societal belief that when you get to a certain age you should just roll over and die. Each individual is different, and if you are capable of competing in your chosen passion, go for it, whatever your age.
So your physical fitness/fatness hasn't fluctuated at all from early 20s to late 50s? It's fairly well documented that the human body degrades after 30.
there's a similar approuch by another genius: Eddie Van Halen, who from an early age understood that getting to know everything about the sounds that could come of of a guitar and an amp was as important as learning chords and music theory
