The Flames put out a 4 part, behind the scenes from the pre-season. After all the off-loading last year, the core that remains are the veterans that have committed to the future, the best young talent Calgary has built up getting a shot and a couple of guys getting a shot who really want to have that chance (Mantha, Kirkland). Everyone was aware they were projected to be bottom feeders this season yet not a single voice in the room believed that was true. You now have a core of guys that want to be there and see each other succeed - expectations are low, morale is sky high. These guys have nothing to lose and are playing like it. If you watched the first game, you could literally see the Flames change gears between the first and second periods, and that second team has been the one we've seen each period since. Who knows what the future holds, but I'm confident these guys have the heart to maintain.
They’re in the rebuilding phase. And they need to consider the implications of the Monahan trade conditions. Finishing bottom 10 ensures they keep their own pick. Calgary holds their own pick and Florida’s this year. If they finish outside the bottom 10, the Canadiens will take the better of the two picks.
Sorry previous commenters, I have optimism. This Flames team will exceed expectations. They are already doing so. I don't know if it will result in them getting a playoff berth when one is unexpected but I will predict this team will place far higher in the standings than the pundits and prognosticators have predicted.
And sabotage their draft position?? Flames need to finish bottom 10 according to the Monahan trade conditions. If they finish outside the bottom 10, Canadiens will take the better draft pick that the Flames possess. Flames have their pick and Florida’s this year.
@@danielnam9026I’m gonna be honest. They were never gonna be bottom 10 this year. Even in the offseason I didn’t think that. There were so many outside factors that affected the flames season. Every month it seemed someone got traded and had to reorganize the lines to fill the holes. Even with all that, Weegar put up a career high 20 goals, sharangovich put up 31 goals and was a key player almost every night, Kadri put up 70 points and Markstrom had stellar goaltending that kept us in games we should’ve lost. We were nowhere near as bad as teams like San Jose who didn’t even have a 30 goal scorer and only one 20 goal scorer. I think what we’re seeing early on this season is a well rounded team that’s playing for each other. 11 goal scorers spread across 4 games means there isn’t a top player per say but the games are team efforts. Are they cup contenders? No but to say this team is so bad they gotta bottom out isn’t realistic in my eyes. Now if we have this conversation in December and the floor falls out beneath them then sure they should move to get a number 1 draft pick or top 3 at least but we’ve already got 2 draft picks in Florida and New Jersey and conroy knows of the situation with our draft pick and he probably has a plan for that but right now it’s not what we should be concerned about
It's so early. It's a good start and a good story but I expect them to fall in the standings later on in the season. I do hope that the young players get a lot of experience and find their game so that the Flames will be competitive in a few years.
