The English voices of Satsuki and Mei in the 2005 English dub version of _My Neighbor Totoro_ are voiced by real life sisters Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning. In addition this film along with _The Wind Rises_ and _Boy and the Heron_ are literally semi-autobiographical and inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s life as a young boy living in Japan considering Satsuki and Mei were heavily inspired by Miyazaki and his brothers when they were young growing up and the girls mother who was ill in the film is largely inspired by his actual mother who got sick and passed away from tuberculosis. Thank you for reacting to one of Studio Ghibli’s and Hayao Miyazaki’s earliest films and hopefully you react to some of their other films such as _Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke_ and _Spirited Away_ just as long as Studio Ghibli doesn’t take down this and your later Ghibli reactions cause they are notorious on taking down video reactions to the films of Studio Ghibli for copyright hence why you hardly see any reactions of them.

_Kiki’s Delivery Service_ is another one my favorite Studio Ghibli films I watch all the time. It’s a shame the vast majority of them don’t talk about it or say it’s their favorite cause the majority seem to prefer _Princess Mononoke_ or _Spirited Away_ as their go-to Ghibli/Miyazaki films they recommend to newcomers over Miyazaki’s earlier films (e.g. Castle in the Sky, Kiki, Totoro).

The reason that the poster/cover has one girl with pigtails is because origially the sotry was going to be about one girl but Hayao Miyazaki and his team ran into problems with the third act so they added her little sister, had the older girl short hair while the younger one have pigtails and having her behind her back to match the poster (didn't do 100 %, they should have updated it instead).

Watching your reaction to this cute movie was so funny and adorable. I couldn’t stop laughing and smiling. In regards to boy and the heron, it is a masterpiece. It’s been winning awards left and right. There are those who don’t understand Miyazaki as well as saying those reviews bc they want Spiderverse to win awards instead. If you liked Spirited Away, you’re gonna like Boy and the Heron. For a more wholesome watch, I’d recommend Kiki, Ponyo or my comfort film Whisper of the Heart. However my first Ghibli film and many people’s favs (still one of mine) is Howl’s Moving Castle. Honestly you can’t go wrong with Ghibli. Just don’t watch the Grave of the Fireflies without multiple boxes of tissues. I’m not even joking. I’m glad youre doing this Monica. Can’t wait to see more!

My Neighbor Totoro is based on director Hayao Miyazaki's childhood experience. His mother had spinal tuberculosis and the family had to move from the city to the countryside to be near the hospital where his mom were treated (they specialized in treatment of spinal tuberculosis so not just any hospital would do). While it's not stated in the movie what illness Mrs. Kusakabe have, most likely it is spinal tuberculosis. Miyazaki have said that if the two main characters were boys instead of girls, he couldn't stand watching the movie because it'd too much (yes, he have a younger brother who Mei represents).

The correct pronounciation is Ghibli, with a hard G. It's the italian name of a hot southern wind, as well as a WWII plane. Miyazaki, the founder of the studio, is the son of an aeronautical engineer and a big airplane enthusiast.

Monica, thank you so, so much for starting your online Ghibli journey with this movie! I love many of the films in the Ghibli repertoire, but "My Neighbour Tototo" is the first one I ever saw, years and years ago as an undergrad, and it remains my favourite to this day. It's broadcast on TV at least once a year in Japan (where I've lived for a long time). No one can blame you for being uncertain how to pronounce that name. The pronunciation you settled on (with a hard 'G') is the correct one for the word itself -- 'ghibli' is Italian for a hot wind that blows in northern Africa. However, Studio Ghibli officially pronounces its own name as 'jibli', as seen on the blue title card with the studio's name -- the katakana reads as 'ji-bu-ri'. So really, either pronunciation can be defended. The various artworks for the film are admittedly confusing as well. A lot of the concept art, and even one theatrical poster, depict the story as having only one girl as a protagonist. That may have been director Hayao Miyazaki's original intention, but as the story developed, it required two sisters. That accounts for the discrepancy, at least from what I've read. The attitude towards spirits in Japan is very complex. Horror stories abound here, and for most Japanese people, the idea of a haunted house would probably evoke the same kind of fear and dread as it would for us. However, Japanese spirituality carries with it a long history of animism, the belief that there are innumerable spirits inhabiting or 'haunting' nature and the world around us. In this story, Totoro is one of these nature spirits -- perhaps not exactly safe, but also not malicious, and very different from a vengeful ghost out to frighten or hurt the living. Buddhism has also had a strong influence on Japanese religious thought. The statues that you noticed appearing in some scenes are representations of a Buddhist bodhisattva, known as Jizo in Japan. Many people here view him as a special protector of travellers and small children, and roadside images and shrines dedicated to him are very common. So it was very natural for Mei and Satsuki to look to him for protection. Sorry for the overly-long comment. I hope it helps you to understand and enjoy the story a little more. Looking forward to your next Ghibli film!

As for the pronunciation, I've heard it both ways , I believe the way they pronounce the name of their own studio is "jhiblee" Would love to see you do Monoke and howls for sure. I honestly love my favorite is Nausicaa and the valley of the wind The new movie is kind of complicated. It may not be the best story ever, But once you watch all of the Ghibli movies, it does feel like a complete wrap-up to the main director's career.

My favorite movie from Studio Ghibli is Castle in the Sky, I have been watching this one since I was 5 (I'm 27 now). Princess Mononoke comes in at a close second. Grave of the fireflies is probably one of the sadest movies I ever watched, and I kinda avoid rewatching it, because it just always breaks my heart. I watch most of the Studio Ghibli movies at least once a year. And I'm really excited to finally watch The boy and the heron, The Red Turtle and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Honestly I wouldn’t describe what I get from Studio Ghibli films as “comfort” per se.. I find them very thought-provoking. They all have a unique calming aura about them, I think mostly due to a technique Hayao Miyazaki uses in his filmmaking called “ma” meaning “movement in stillness.” His plot beats are uniquely silent and still, letting the audience stop in time and take it all in. A severely underrated film of theirs, to me, is one called Only Yesterday. I don’t see many people acknowledge it, I think partially because it’s not by Miyazaki. But I love Isao Takahata’s work as well.

Don’t forget the “honorary” Ghibli movie, “Lupin III & the Castle of Cagliostro”, which director Hayao Miyazaki did while he was still working for TV, before there was a Studio Ghibli, but it’s just as pure classic as the others.

The girl with ponytails with an umbrella you saw was originally meant to be in the film but got split into the two sisters from what I know.(For some reason she's still in advertisement & the cover of the DVD) Fun fact Totoro's name comes from Mei mispronouncing "Torōru" which is Japanese for troll. The statues Mei was found near are meant to be a symbol of protecting children with an equivalent being a statue of Jesus or the virgin Mary. The movie back when it aired in movie theaters or something was a double feature with the movie Grave of the Fireflies, the studio madated Totoro play after Grave of the Fireflies because people would leave if this played first cause Grave of the Fireflies is heart breaking.
@StoryMing
@StoryMing 4 месяца назад
You were talking about different versions of the picture (movie poster) you’ve seen; I suspect that the one with pigtails might be an earlier draft when there was just one main character. When they were split into two- an older and a younger sister- that’s when Satsuki got the short haircut, and Mei inherited the pigtails.

I recommend you watch Ponyo (or Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea which is called in some countries). Like Totoro it is a cute, wholesome feel-good movie though it has a more striaght foward story inspired by The Little Mermaid (both the Disney movie and the H.C. Andersen tale) about a five year-old fish girl who falls in love with a five year old boy and she wants to become human so she can be with him.

I remember my first Ghibli movies were Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, and well... those are a bit more intense so as a child i kinda got scared of them and i wasn't really watching Ghibli that much. Recently watched some movies tho, and theyre awasome. Because of previously mentioned reasons i don't think i have a "comfort" movie from them, because for that i feel i would need to remember them from childhood. But i am big fan of "The Wind Rises", its less standard Ghibli movie i guess, but i really like how its explores relationship beetwen creator and his work (the movie is about engineer making warplanes but i feel it fits as allagory for creative work too) And honestly i really enjoyed "The Boy and the Heron". To be honest, i guess this is one of the most "we will show you something that you will need to interpretate to understand it" of the Ghibli movies but this is also the reason why i liked it. I understand for some people it might not work, but once in a while why not watch something i don't understand wholy but maybe i can kinda get a feeling what it is about. And its still a beatiful animation

"Ghibli" pronounced with a soft g is the Japanese pronunciation, so the way Miyazaki says it; meanwhile, the hard g is the way it's pronounced in Italian, since ghibli is an Italian word. At the end of the day, it's correct both ways.

everyone is suggesting miyazaki’s films, which you should watch obvi, but i dare you to watch grave of the fireflies, only yesterday, and the tale of princess kaguya. the boy and the heron was really great imo. in miyazaki’s latest works, he’s moved onto more subjective storytelling as opposed to a narrative structure. and i think research into miyazaki’s *very* interesting life is a must-do prior to watching the boy and the heron. not just his upbringing but how he neglected his own children, specifically his son, as he was too busy making these films to be a father. and also the pressure he feels as there’s currently nobody he trusts to make more studio ghibli films/carry out his legacy. which says a lot, considering his son has made 3 studio ghibli films 💀

Adorable reaction! -While not the FIRST studio Ghibli film in the next batch you should watch, one that should definitely be on your list (that other commenters haven't mentioned) is 'Lupin III - The Castle of Cagliostro.' (Please don't let the fact that it's part of a 'Lupin' character series (which you probably haven't seen) discourage you in any way. The film is self-contained and you don't have to have seen prior films to enjoy it. The film is a total blast of a swashbuckling adventure - delightful! (I'd do Kiki, Howl's moving castle and Porco Rosso first). •••• -For later: You may not know that a SECOND English-dubbed version of 'My Neighbor Totoro' exists. It's informally called the 'Fox' version (after one of the companies involved) - and it's quite good, pre-dating the Disney dub that you've reacted to here. In the Fox dub, the girl called 'Satski' is consistently called 'Satsuki.' ...This alternate dub is TOTALLY worth seeking out (if you can find an old DVD of it somewhere)... because there are subtle differences between the FOX English translation and this one. It's a fun game to spot these subtle differences. (I definitely prefer the sound of Totoro's ROAR on the Fox version!) For instance: When Satski, searching for her vanished sister, stops at Totoro's tree at dusk, and pauses... In the FOX version, she clearly speaks addressing Totoro directly (before she sees him), spelling out the nature of the emergency. By contrast, in the Disney dub with the Fanning sisters, during that same pause, Satski ••addresses the tree•• "Please - let me in to see Totoro. It's an emergency!" (Presumably because the tree has the power to hide or close off its secret entrance. ) Which version got it 'right' (most accurate)? (Does the Campher tree hide Totoro, or do the Totoros have the power to hide themselves and also 'seal off' their secret opening in the tree? We don't know! If Miyazaki has an opinion on it, I've never heard it! :)

If you’re looking for the (relatively) more lighthearted side of Ghibli, I‘d suggest Kiki‘s delivery service, The cat returns, Ponyo, My neighbors the Yamadas etc. before you ease towards the darker Themes of Boy and the Heron or Grave of the Fireflies. I think it’s always best to not let your viewing experience be too tainted by reviewing trends, many people will jump on a hype train (positive or negative) and won’t be able to give you an objective opinion anyway.

Depends on the reaction channel and the content they react (although that is subjective and another story) but I agree Studio Ghibli have been notorious on taking down clips and reactions of anything related to Ghibli for international copyright, hence why not to many reactors have reacted to the films of Studio Ghibli (despite being fans of their films). The only other reaction channels that were able to react to the films of Studio Ghibli with no issues are LIPPSSMACKER, WorkingTitleReacts, Reel-Time, 3 Katanas/Quirky Quota (who so far only did _Spirited Away),_ Cinema Therapy and Suzy Lu as those channels especially the latter channel still having the reactions still up and not copyright claimed by Studio Ghibli. I remember Stephanie Best also did reacted to some Studio Ghibli films such as _Spirited Away_ and _Princess Mononoke_ on her channel back in 2020/2021 but those reactions were taken down 2-3 years later in 2022/2023. I’m being cautious with this reaction cause If it does get taken down 3-5 days later at least we know why.

@@EChacon I remember when Stephanie Best did those, I think her strategy was to keep them up very shortly and take them down voluntarily before copyright strikes showed up, if I remember correctly
