Smooth 4 arrived today ready for this wedding 👰 I’ve got to film tomorrow. Glad I got it. Combined with Filmic Pro it hands down beats the Osmo Mobile 3 gimbal.
One thing that can help the "up and down" movement of the image while walking is shooting at 60fps and set playback at 24fps. Looks great! Of course, it will depend on what you're shooting.
little heavy duty piece of velcro at the end of the axis and on another end of the actual zhiyun counter balance and it will balance the moment wide perfectly. that lens i think is 79g or something,zhiyun sells a counter balance for $15 or so on amazon that's got a thread you can file off. or keep.
Professional presentation! I recently bought the original Smooth Q for a test with my iPhone and found that my landscape video ends up in portrait mode after "saving" to iPhone Photos. Any suggestions on how to prevent this? Also, after "setting the exposure", the exposure changes during shooting according to different lighting conditions. Any idea how to lock the exposure? I hope this is operator error, but I would like to confirm that the ZY app is working properly BEFORE investing in the Smooth 4. I am not an expert on the ZY play app, I rarely use it except to set up the gimbal. I typically use third-party apps like Filmic Pro, which you can use with a Smooth 4. Sounds like it’s possible that orientation lock is turned on or was on when you were shooting. Locking the exposure usually happens when you press on the reticle and hold it down, otherwise it will shift. The Smooth 4 is a great gimbal, but again, I would recommend using a third-party app. Thanks for watching!
I was enjoying using FiLMiC Pro with the Smooth 4 for over a month. Then I hooked up the ZY Play app and used the gimbal once with that app. I have since been unable to connect my FiLMiC Pro to the Smooth 4 gimbal. I have re-downloaded both apps losing all my presets and still cannot connect Filmic Pro to the Smooth 4, even without ZY Play app on my phone.
Yes there’s a problem with the Zhiyun SDK and so it’s not working for everyone right now. Told a fix is in the works though. Heard a temp fix is to manually set your phone clock back to an earlier date.
iPhoneographers Thank you for the reply. I also today encountered a problem with the Filmic Remote for the first time in two months. The record button went read during recording but without my glasses on I didn’t notice the counter was evidently not moving. I lost five scenes of a class video today. Whole day lost. I tested it later and verified that it won’t sync up properly now with the filmic pro app on my iPhone 11. I also had trouble with the focus reticule working if that’s of any help.
Which one should I buy for Android phone - zhiyun smooth 4 or smooth Q2 ? I heard zhiyun app compatibility issues with android so, should I go with zhiyun or other gimbal.. any recommendations ?
This video is so well made. I love the rhythm & flow of the content & features. As a voice-over artist myself, the VO artist (possibly creator) here is extremely clear and well articulated. Guys, could you help me? I've just downloaded Filmic Pro and tried to pair them by going to that gear icon and selected hardware but the problem is, SHIYUN isn't on the display. I just see 3 selections including dgi osmo. What should I do pls..

Hey thanks! Glad you liked it. Used two cameras and then in editing reframed & repositioned different shots to make it look like there were more. Shot in 4K and edited in HD so there’s plenty of room in the footage to move it around without degrading it. 👍🏻
I really wanted to like this gimbal, but there are 2 features that were part of my requirements to purchase. I wanted something that has good active tracking and pano. The other features are battery life, ease of use, and weight. These features it has. The weight was on the heavy side but I thought I can live with it. The smooth 4’s active tracking was very bad, and the pano was very slow.
Great tutorial. I am learning it right now, and I find that the “menu” button on the Smooth 4 does absolutely nothing in Filmic Pro. What is you experience?
Believe that button lets you exit out of menus or go back. Don’t have the gimbal right now to confirm, but don’t actually use that much. Pretty cool. I finally picked up an iphone 11. Do you still like this Zhiyun with filmic pro? Any others out there to compare for filmic pro integration? I’ve done a fair amount with DJI Osmo + and other Osmo’s....and they are too compressed, breaking handles etc. not going to bother fixing them. Maybe go this route for a fun portable shoot anywhere camera?
The Smooth 4 is still solid but payload not great for larger phones. The DJI Osmo Mobile 3 is one to look at too in that price range. The best options are probably the FeiyuTech G6 Max or Zhiyun Crane M2. The newer Smooth Q is nice also.
iPhoneographers Sort of leaning towards a DJI Osmo Mobile 3 for starter.. and then later a Zhiyun Crane or other better gimbal. DJI to look like a tourist and be invisible and easily stash in jacket pocket. Hmmmm. I forget.. did the Osmo Mobile 3 go into flashlight mode for the ultra wide?
Nice to see that the Smooth 4 integrates with Filmic Pro now. I might have to pick one up because the integration and control with Filmic Pro looks amazing (I should have waited). I purchased the Osmo 2 and it really struggles with the iPhone 7+ and Moment lenses even with the counterweight...even more than my Smooth Q. I use the Crane 2 with my DSLR and it really is nice to be able to control camera functions from the handle of the gimbal, but having a gimbal that controls the iPhone in a compact form factor is next level!
I have a smooth q and i think is not neccesary to upgrade to this except you chase the zoom in or out feature. The other just the same but smooth q better bcause never lose bluetooth connection and more compact size with nice carying case.
We like the Smooth Q a lot! Main reason to upgrade to us is the Filmic Pro integration with the gimbal. You can’t control it the same way with the Smooth Q.
I am looking at upgrading my EVO Shift to a Smooth 4 because of the Filmic Pro integration but a couple of things are giving me pause for thought. 1. No joystick. I like being able to pan and tilt with my thumb. That's highly useful when holding it out the car window to get low shots, rather than bending a wrist. 2. This is more general. Connecting a mic. Most gimbals seem to have the Lightning connector (I'm on iPhone) up against the gimbal. Plugging in a mic throws it off balance. Any general tips on that, or is buying and rebalancing with a counterweight the way to go? Thanks in advance for any guidance. Keep up the good work!
Lack of a joystick is a concern for many, but it works ok without it. And mics can be tricky too! You might consider a DJI Osmo if you’re looking for a smartphone only gimbal. Or look at larger “hybrid” like the Moza Mini-P or FeiyuTech G6 Max.
smooth-round means easier to slip and loose control also. Does it rely on dedicated vdo shoot app or I can use any gimbal or vdo app ? I hear the Q2 can use any app. ?? Filmic is for vdo shoot app.; or gimbal control ?
Love all your videos and am sold on the Zhiyun 4 but wonder if I can find a right angle lightning cable to 3.5 Mini female or lightning right angle male to female lightning. I want to plug a mike into my phone because sometimes I actually want to use my voice! Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for watching! Have seen right angle Lightning to micro USB for charging, but not 3.5mm. Of course there is the regular adapter that Apple makes it’s not right angle but it will adapt Lightning to 3.5mm.
old school method of keeping the "up and down" comment under better control is to use some weight. either screw something into the bottom of the gamble, or use a (example: 5Lb wrist weight for exercise). we used to do this when gimbles cost 60 grand. works rather well as a cheap steady cam.
Can we charge phone with gimbal and record at the sametime.Because battery drain very fast in third party app. Waiting for quick response with regards Yogesh

I have the same setup Smooth 4 with iPhone 8 Plus. Did you encounter any wobbly effects due to the phone’s built in optical image stabilization? I can’t disable it on the phone because it’s mechanically builtin. And filmic Pro can only do it by software. I was told to use a magnet to counter the phones OIS. What are your thoughts?
The OIS is hardware based, so you can’t disable it. Using a gimbal though we haven’t experienced many, if any, issues though. We definitely have had problems with it with bumps shooting handheld or even on a tripod if the camera gets hit (even slightly hit). So yeah, it kinda sucks for video. But we just really pay attention to it and avoid circumstances where it could affect things. Haven’t tried the magnet trick, but have heard the new XS phones are much better and almost eliminate the problem. We’re upgrading pretty soon and will he testing this.
Awesome video! Do you know if there is any other gimbal (or ways) to remotely control our focus on FilmiC Pro without touching the screen? As a brazilian, you might know that every single imported product around here is very expensive and we're constantly looking for the cheaper way to achieve what we want to do, that's why I asked if there is any other gimbal options available, keeping in mind that I don't have another smartphone or iPad, just my S10+. Yesterday I saw a OM4 review that says you can control the focus adjustments by connecting with FiLMiC Pro right on the joystick (up and down), do you know anything about this?
Oh ok, I see… Then yes the OM4 will connect within Filmic Pro to control some features. It’s a nice gimbal for phone only setups. It’s not great if you need to add accessories like lenses, etc., but most smartphone gimbals aren’t. Overall it’s a solid option.

The stuff like tracking etc are only with the Zhiyun app. The benefits of using Filmic Pro are the UI of their app and the manual controls along with the ability to shoot high bit rates and in cinematic log or flat gamma curves.
If I had to choose between the Smooth 4, M2 and Smooth Q2, what are the different features and why would i buy one over another? Please let me know. I will choose one of these three for use with a smartphone and the new GoPro. Thanks! :) Or should I get a DJI Osmo Pocket?
Only get the M2 if you have other type of heavier cameras. If you’re using for smartphones or action cameras only then that wouldn’t be our first choice. Haven’t used the new Smooth Q2 yet. We’re getting one soon though. The others are a tossup. The DJI will hold more weight. Lots of great choices out there for gimbals right now.
Currently there's a bundle for "Filmix pro Camera Kit" Inside there's Filmic Pro and Filmic Remote. Is it worth/necessary/ a must to get it as a bundle or just Filmic pro is enough
Do you know if I can shot with and iPhone X mounted on a DJI Ronin S ? I'm using professionally my iPhone X + moment lenses and my Canon t5i, so I was thinking of buying just one gimbal that I can use sometimes with the canon and swap with the iPhone when needed.
Haven’t used that combo, but can say we used an iPhone 8 Plus on a Zhiyun Crane and it worked great. We put the phone in a Helium Core rig, which we’d recommend to give it weight and more size. Either that or a Beastgrip should work. Link to our gear suggestions page in the description of this video if you need it.
Does either have BT audio like the FT spg2 ? Does either let you usse your own phone vdo shooting app. ie. not dedicated to locked in . But then the control app can't control all your vdo options on your phone. Give and take vs integrated gimbal to the vdo app. Date/time on the vdo frames is std ?

No, you don’t need to buy the FiLMiC Pro app. It’s just nice that it integrates with it. Zhiyun has their own app if you want to use it. The video quality is just not as good. We used an iPhone 8 Plus and it held it no problem so a 7 Plus should work fine.

The easiest editing app is probably iMovie, but it’s also limited in what it can do. But it’s fine to start with and works on iPhone or iPad. A much better option is LumaFusion, which is quite powerful, but there is a learning curve. One other to consider is KineMaster. With some practice and experience you can get it figured out. Best of luck! :)

I would really like a smooth 4 now its integrated with filmic pro. The setup would be so much faster than the Crane M i'm using. i'd like to counter balance the ExoLens on it though, which is probably similar weight to the Moment lens - if your able to explore this further i'd be keen to see it!
We’re going to do that for sure! It works with the Moment, just felt a tad bit sluggish. But, we haven’t done much real world shooting with it yet. Our Smooth Q held it fine - so we think the Smooth 4 will be okay, too. Just our initial feeling is a bare-bones setup is probably ideal for it (but that probably applies to most smartphone gimbals).
FiLMiC Pro is and so the gimbal should work too (haven’t tested that device). Download the Filmic Evaluator app and it will confirm if your phone will work.
Well, nice video and pretty cool app, its too bad you have to buy it on iphone to try it. Yes, the best is put iphone without a case in clamp, with case i felt like it will drop out somehow. And one more thing I found out, when filming in the wind, it sounds so loud so I ordered Boya microphone, and ring with hot shoe to attach it. Thank you for video, I subscribed
iPhoneographers some android phones wont work with Zhiyun app too, they work but you cannnot call it work as the app freezes every minute, when I tried zoom wheel it stopped completely, so I had to restart app and trie agai. All that was with LG G6 phone which I had, now I have iphone and it works flawless
The Ace of Spades really its truth, i tried many good android phones but iphone is better in its speed, camera and design too, as I work in phone repair shop I can confirm that they are good when it comes to screen or battery replacement ;)

Thanks for watching! As far as pairing a gimbal with that device you’ll need to check the specific manufacturers to see compatibility, however just using the phone on gimbal (which we do all the time) shouldn’t be an issue with really any one of them. Some gimbals like the Smooth Q will connect to pretty much any device via Bluetooth to control start/stop recording.
That’s a semi-subjective call, but would say no. Primarily because this one doesn’t have near the payload capacity. The negative to the Movi is you can’t use the ultra wide lens really at all without a lot of modification. The Movi is probably one of our favorite gimbals besides that part of it. If you want to use every lens you might look at the FeiyuTech G6 Max.
We don’t on this one as our phone will last fine if charged first. But, you can use an L cable and slide the phone down to charge it. That is one nice thing about the Moza gimbal having wireless charging if you need it.
We haven’t used the Osmo 2 yet, so can’t comment on it. We will be soon though. Most reports say it’s a solid gimbal. Smooth 4 works well so far with our 8 Plus.
