Alex, thank you for a very, very interesting video on living in Greenland. Many years ago, I had the good fortune to fly for the first time to America and I actually flew over the lower part of Greenland. It scared me, looking down on what seemed a barren and desolate land. The thought that people lived there was so hard to take in. Yet in the space of half an hour, you have really opened my eyes on a "new" and vibrant country, that as you said, is on the verge of becoming big in so many aspects of modern life. Thank you, I look forward to seeing more of your very interesting country.

Well, I am too old to go there, but it would be nice to make friends on the internet. I live in central Georgia, a hot and humid place in the summer with mild winters. I think things like a small nuclear reactor and vertical indoor gardening using LED lights would help to get fresh vegetables right there. Having that in place would help your nation grow with a chance to start fresh to create your own lifestyle apart from the troubles we have down here. One valuable resource you have plenty of is good potable water. As the rest of the world finds water is getting more difficult to find and use, you have the one most important resources to support life. I think your nation will grow, and I hope it will use this opportunity to make a wonderful, peaceful place to live for the future generations to live there.

You've certainly picked an off the beaten path topic but that's its appeal for some of us. We visited Greenland on a cruise some years ago(Qaqortoq and Nuuk). So glad we did. It's a place that fascinates me yet I would never live there except for a specific short period of time. A couple of remarks from me. One is that it's hard to see Greenland ever with the population of Iceland. The geography of it is so limiting and I cannot imagine(at least at this time) a road system connecting the towns with Nuuk. That also is the problem with the aesthetic of living in Greenland. It's so sparse. It has some austere beauty with the ice but no trees and all rocks. The homes are certainly not a realtor's dream to sell. They are functional first and foremost. In videos I rarely see pets. Are they really that rare? I assume it's a hostile place for pets with limited, if any, parks and expanses of land to walk them. Obviously there are expanses of land but hardly a dog's/human's dream for a walk. If a pet gets loose I would assume while he may benefit from the visibility of no trees, greenery and standing out against a white background of snow and ice he may also be at great danger of surviving if not found quickly. In any case it's great for people like me that you are providing this kind of insight. What I'd like to see if you ever want to do it is what a good grocery store looks like, what it's supplied with and those costs and also fine dining. I assume there are a couple of spots there for fine dining? It seems likely Pisiffik is the commerce center and a social center? If so, do you have any commentary on that. Is there much with theater there and the arts? Regarding the roads Greenland strikes me as a bit like Alaska in that roads are often only local. In one town(Ketchikan?) I believe there are only 26 miles of road. Any estimate of that in Nuuk? Ok, that's a lot but it's an appreciation of what you do. Interesting stuff.
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
Hi Richard, glad you enjoyed your stay here and as you said, it definitely isnt for everybody to live here...😅 I dont think a lot of towns in Greenland will get connected by roads as it is too expensive and too little reasons for connecting them. But as long as there is jobs, internet, water, electricity and a functioning infrastructure I think Greenland could very well grow substantially in population. A goal for the municipality of Nuuk is to have 30.000 people in 2030, we are now 18.473 (as of july 2020), might or might not happen... As for groceries and cultural exhibitions I will make a video on that subject.😉
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
For pets, some people have dogs and cats, it is mainly personal preference and if you rent your house, a matter of landlords not liking pets😄
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
Also for selling houses as a realtor, I am sure the houses in Nuuk are a dream. As the real estate market is pretty scorching hot and prices nearing prices pr m2 in Copenhagen, Denmark. So big bucks for selling the high in demand housing.
@richardbroderick8618
@richardbroderick8618 3 года назад
@@AlexAmasaOlsen Hi Alex. I will be watching out for your videos and, hopefully, they will cover shopping and culture. I wonder aloud though just how much population Greenland can expect if there are no roads. It's interesting what you said about Nuuk having a population of 30k by 2030. Now that's beginning to be a real city! What next? Skyscrapers? Sure there is the water passage and there are helicopters but roads allow towns to grow out and have closer populations(suburbs, exurbs...) than seas do really enhancing community growth which encourages population growth and cities to become so much more than, say, a Qaqortok which I really liked but just too small for me. I'm beginning to sound like a naysayer but it's in good spirit. Living there fascinates me and talking about these aspects of that intrigues me. I have not seen all your videos but I believe you said you're an engineer? Are you involved with Nuuk's development as an urban engineer? I'm thinking not given I didn't hear that from you but what a job that would be to have! One could become famous in the development of the city. An idea: maybe you could cover Pisiffik the physical location itself and perhaps the role it plays in the city. It's possible I don't have the correct idea of Pisiffik but it seemed to be a center of some kind in the city.
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
I am engineer and currently work as a consulting engineer within the construction sector, so we make projects for new buildings, harbours and sometimes infrastructure. I spoke with a colleague and there should be 120-150km of road in Nuuk and some expansion is possible, but Nuuks geography is not ideal for mega expansion.. Pisiffik is a chain of supermarkets, like Walmart, we do have another conmpeting chain called Brugseni and one called KNI (mostly on smaller towns/settlements).

Very informative! Thanks! But how would Greenlanders respond to a lot of new immigrants? It's hypothetical, but just 6,000 immigrants would become 10% of the total population! That's a small amount of people potentially causing a big cultural shift, especially if these are people who will really want to stay!
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
Thanks Adam😁 That is a good question, i guess it depends on where those 6.000 potential newcomers decide to stay.. As the housing market in Nuuk is a little difficult to get into, if you job doesnt supply you one. But generally I think Greenland would adapt, as it has done with example the large influx of danish people when greenland was a colony. Culturally I believe it is important to keep traditions alive and as long as it is a political priority and people enjoy the traditions, I believe they will survive.

I mean you can, but your best choice would be to live in Nuuk then. The smaller towns dont get the same amount of fresh produce. It is pricey though to get a lot of greens, but you can always go frozen..

Yes, usually quite a lot comes on cruiseships (not these years due to covid) also americans. Though as an american you really have to be determined to get here as the only flights into Greenland are via Iceland and Denmark. Hopefully with the construction of our new airports, the infrastructure to the US becomes better.😎

Hi Alex, what about tourism? I've seen Iceland has gained a lot of positions in the European travel destinations so I was wondering if that's happening to Greenland and to his tourism industry too . Any chance to work there if I don't speak danish but 4 languages? Like the airport, hotels or so.. Nice video!
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
Hi Marco! It is slowly getting more popular to travel to Greenland, but it is a more expensive trip. What Greenland is focusing on are a lot of adventure tourists and more service products are being developed. What languages do you speak? As of right now, the tourist industry is probably not your best bet (pandemic), but we do have hotels and such. The big problem with working in Greenland is that, the jurisdiction is through the Danish foreign affair jurisdiction. Which means, it is fairly easy for citizens of EU countries to get working permit in Greenland, but more difficult for non EU citizens to get working permits (you have to reapply every year and the process is slow). What Iceland did great, was to have a better and faster process for foreign workers to enter and get working permit. Which means easier for people who wants to get there. Maybe I should make a video in regards to getting to work in Greenland.. ;-)

@@AlexAmasaOlsen I speak Italian, English, Spanish and French (starting a Portuguese course in a while). Of course I was considering waiting until this situation will be over, and anyway I've just come to Spain and I'll be living here at least for another year. Still I'm trying to understand how life and work are in Greenland now because, you'll agree, it's not an easy choice to make and definitely not an easy move to plan. I'm European so it would be not that hard for me to get all the documents done, as you say. Do you know the average salary of a generic employee? Could you say that's a fair amount of money to afford a decent lifestyle ? Hope you don't answer me here, but with one of your videos! Thanks!

Nice, greenlandic and danish is of course preferable, but english speakers are getting more common. A generic job, it would be a little difficult to have a decent lifestyle (very subjective opinion), as costs are fairly high. But I have it on my to do video list😉

Hey man, was wondering how the health care industry is there in greenland. Can Nuuk citizens expect good medical diagnosis/urgent care? That's always something I've wondered about extremely sparse and isolated nations. Can't imagine contracting a rare illness or having a very adverse medical reaction to something when your town is, say, 1-2 thousand people
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 3 года назад
Nuuk has around 19.000 people and the healthcare system works, maybe not the best, but if something happens you get help for free (oaid through taxes😏). The system could definitely be better, but if you cant get treated here, then you get sent to Copenhagen, Denmark

Well, greenlandic and danish people have been mixed for a while and most people have some kind of a connection to each country. I myself am 25% greenlandic, but doesnt really look the bit😅 Lately more people from other countries have arrived and it is getting more racially diverse. So my take is that Greenland is welcoming people of all kinds, as long as they contribute positively towards the country and people. I personally experience getting called out sometimes, mostly when people are intoxicated, but dont give too much thought to that.
