How it's made! COFFEE GROUNDS into PELLET - some tests in the factory

Hello RU-vid! Today we present to you some tests we have made to pellet coffee grounds. We tested various flavours of wood (fir and chestnut chips) and coffee, together with various percentages of wood/coffee. Once we have obtained the best one, which led us to a good result, a good final product with a higher energy content. The next steps are the combustion tests. Enjoy the vision!

I work at a pellet press manufacturer and one of the interesting things i learnd was that at coffee manufacturers , the shells of the coffee beans are processed into pellets and then the beans are roasted with them

Hi! Thank you for the comment! yeah, doing these resarches I also found out that! That's good, that something is recycled. Also here in Italy they do recover a lot of material during coffee processing. This happens also in hazelnut industry (Nutella, as you may know ahaha)

And what was the moisture content of coffee ground?
@violentblue123
@violentblue123 9 месяцев назад
Scotland recently made export of peat illegal (or at least restricted) wondering if you would try pelletizing loose peat to see how they burn and if they have similar characteristic to Scottish or Irish bog peat.

Hi! Thank you for the comment! Well, unfortunately I don't have that kind of material, so I cannot make these kind of tests. That's really sad..maybe they did this to keep material in your region, given the energetic problems we have around Europe now.

Good ideas. How did you reduce the moisture content of the coffee grounds? Was the any residue from the oils, etc. after combustion?
@profilo_is_back
@profilo_is_back Год назад
Hi! Thank you for the comment! Well, in this specific case we left the coffee grounds in the factory for several months, so ther dryied out almost completely. In production conditions I would use an industrial dryier (as you can see in the pellet video explanation, in my channel). it should be ok a 5%-15% moiusture content in the final product, the one before milling phase. About combustion residuals, I'm sorry but we haven't still done any combustion tests. They will be showed in the next video. I won't expect that much residuals, oil and greases in the coffee grounds will burn correctly in the stove. Maybe we can find something in home-fireplaces and pellet stoves, where combustion is not at that high temperature, such as those of big (high kW) wood chip and pellet stove. In these machines I'm quite sure the combustion will be very good. Hope this reply was ok for you! Bye!

@@profilo_is_back I live in western Canada and have been looking at burning sawmill offcuts, Mountain Pine Beetle damage, recycled engine oil, coal fines/granules. I can add coffee grounds to the list of ingredients to investigate in the production of fuel cake and pellets.
@profilo_is_back
@profilo_is_back Год назад
@@enkhyy That's good, everything is celar. Yeah, I'll try for sure combustiont tests with this material. however, I won't compare wood and coffee grounds (organic materials) to recycled engine oil or coal, fossil fuels. Speaking about tests, that's ok. But I won't for sure burn recycled engine oil at home!

Ciao!

How well did it burn compared against normal material?
@profilo_is_back
@profilo_is_back Год назад
Hi! Thank you for the comment! We still haven't done any burning test, neither any comparison. Incredibly, we do produce wood pellet in our factory, but we haven't a pellet stove on which we can do some tests. In the next weeks I'll try to repair our old and small pellet stove, so that we can arrange some combustion test, as well as some comparison with other wood types.

Did I see and hear that right 80% walnut 20% coffee grounds would be 20k and 4K not the 5k right ? If I’m wrong can someone please explain.

hi! Thank you for the reply! I'm sorry...you are perfectly right. When preparing the speech I totally got wrong about percentages. We made the eprcentage correctly (80-20), but I indicated them wrong in the speech. I'm really sorry for the error.

No. Your original 5k of coffee grounds was correct. Not 4k. Students were advised to not skip math class for a good reason.

from an italian machine manufacturer. And general components such as bearings and grease, they come from geenral suppliers.

@@profilo_is_back could you make 100% coffee ground pellets? I understand it is not good for burning. If it works, could it be good for something like cat litter?
@profilo_is_back

@@nickj2508 Hi! Thank you for the comment! Well, I don't think ti qill be so easy. Maybe with an higher compression ring die you can use much higher coffee percentages, however I think a bit of wood hsould be still necessary. About combustion, we will do some tests in the next week. I don't expet any big troubles. About cat litter, this may be a very good intuition! I've never tought about that. Stay tuned for the video about combustion test! Bye!

@@nickj2508crazy fact about cats and dogs. They cannot breakdown caffeine. It is toxic to them. I'm unsure how specific the absorption would be on the pads of their feet. But I would certainly keep the coffee and anything else known for caffeine content away from them.

@profilo_is_back
@profilo_is_back 11 месяцев назад
Hi! Thank you for the comment! Well, we have tried but it was too softf. No consistency. The material wasn't able to stay compacted all toghether. Only coffee ground is too 'oily', 'greasy'. You need like a 'structural' component in the whole mixture. We found out that these percentages where the correct to get the best product out of our machine.
