I put in a few years manually assembling windshields. The plant was plagued with mosquitoes. They came into the plant through the large doors used by forklifts, always open. Management ignored complaints. So, instead of shooing away the mosquitoes that landed on the vinyl before we put on the second piece of glass, we entombed them within, and shipped the windshields to the assembly plants with mosquitoes in the windshield, looking like you hit them with a moving auto. But these bugs couldn’t be cleaned off. Shortly after, they installed quick open/close doors, and dozens of Purple Martin houses out back.
It's funny how you have to ruin product to get upper management to spend some capital on the place. My job is the same way except when QA catches things nothing gets done, when an outside plant does its 5whys root cause analysis etc lol
Do you know the most expensive windshield are actually under $50 Canadian I work in a factory making windshields for all types of vehicles. Even transport trucks are under $50. It’s an insane Market . Absolutely ridiculous. What we’re getting charged
I wish I could make a windshield that makes it better to see at all times like those glasses that are made for you when you put them on you can see the road crystal clear.
You can, it requires a polarization sheet like they use to detect defects at 5:07. You could technically just attach a big sheet on the inside of your windshield. Light photons are polarized, meaning they effectively move towards you not as a dot • but as a line ---. That means you can filter it out with a grating/slit pattern going the other direction. The majority of light you see reflected from the road is horizontally polarized, because of the bounce angle on the road polarizing the light, so you can filter out the glare with a polarizing sheet oriented vertically.
@@yosephine545 I had someone steal my classic car and wreck the windshield. I've been inspired to start a custom curved glass company. I cut a temporary sheet of polycarbonate to fit the pillars and then use the shape to create a custom mold for the glass. I'm searching for ideas to improve the glass because one rock and it's all over 😢
I worked in the lamination line at Libbey Owens Ford in Lathrop, CA. We supplied a set of glass to NUMMI in Fremont through the Nineties. The whole set for a Tacoma Truck would be sold at $38 a set. Amazing.
@AirplaneFreak Some glass comes from suppliers - LOF. ASAHI, PPG so their logo is on the glass. I suppose it's up to the maker if they place their name on the silk screen. DOT requires the plant number where the lites are created. I suppose even companies that create 'jobbers' or replacement lites for the aftermarket need that info too.
My dad worked in a glass factory, he had a big scar on his chest from when he was working as the person that broke off the extra glass on the edges at some point in the process before setting it onto another part of the line... one time a piece of glass shattered in the wrong way and flew straight into his chest, missing his heart by inches. He also mentioned that the factory was as hot as a sauna in the summertime; whenever he walked into an air conditioned room he thought it was like an ice box. I dont know the whole process, i just know he said they would come to you with a big stack of glass to work on, and that was your quota for the day; the faster you worked, the faster you could get a break, and 10 years of doing the same thing over and over I guess you get pretty fast at it.
Why can’t people order windshields and replace them themselves? In california theres millions of break ins and the glass replacement company are making profit because they’re the only ones that work on glass so they can set the price to anything.
I live in California and you absolutely can buy the windshield by itself. Installation is not simple for some models, it’s easier to change a set of brake pads than some windshields. On newer model cars with flush mounted types, it’s pretty easy. On older models not so much, on vintage cars like I work on , you sometimes have to remove the headliner to install a windshield. Not fun and not cheap. You also have to have specialty tools, like trim pullers. If you don’t know how to remove the trim it can cost you, since sometimes vintage trim pieces cost thousands of dollars.
I wanted to try it out and try replacing it myself. RU-vid has pretty good diy. I believe I ended up overpaying some people for a new windshield. I told them to let it loose since window regulator isn’t working and i had to replace it another day. As long as I got the angle right and window goes in I would’ve been set. I did ask if I can only purchase the window and they told me no. I had to pay the window and labor. So that’s easy money for them. As for being unfair.. I discontinue my visits to them. I have pretty nasty stories of people overcharging me in that area. Nm I can do but discontinue making visits.
Someone already broke into my car and I removed the shattered glass and i’m familiar with replacing a window regulator. All they did was within a minute of doing their job slip a window in and overcharge me. (I have a chevy suburban 1999)
