@@HighOnIce as an overall project yes it was. Idk what it was but there was some real questionable production decisions made on it beat and vocal wise. I forgot till Em said on the Paul Pod too that the tracklist had leaked, so I'll bet when people saw the Beyonce and Ed Sheeran features (I think they were 2 of the better songs on Revival honestly) they probably immediately thought it was gonna be Encore 2.0. And in hindsight, it kinda was. Only Encore was a lot better produced because it was a Dre in house album. Conceptually though, it was the same. Some songs I loved (Like Toy Soldiers, Mockingbird) and others like Big Weenie I could care less about. With Revival, I for one LOVE Castle & Arose. I honestly think they could be 2 of the best songs he's ever done period and it's a damn shame they were not only on that album but so far into it, as I'll bet a lot of people didn't get to them because of that. There's 3 or 4 others I don't mind, but I couldn't really care for the rest. That's why he took so much offence to it, because he put his all into songs like that. Even he admitted though that there was a few songs on it he'd like to do over in hindsight. It is a shame, because that concept along with the features he had definitely had the potential to be something special. It just went wrong for whatever reason. You're never going to fuck with an entire album back to front unless it's an absolute classic, that's the way I look at it. Some people though, were way more vocal about it than they needed to be. In hindsight, I'm kinda glad it went down the way it did because had Revival not flopped, we would never have got Kamikaze. Pissed off Em is the best Em, and you can't tell me any different.
J Cole is the man, I love his whole come up story, the transformation, all of that. 2014 was my senior year so I literally got to watch him grow through the second half of that.
Nah man Nah, the Nas-Cole was the single best “passing the torch” moment in rap. Also, comeon man Nas is a legend did y’all forget who obliterated hova ?
Ever since I started listening to Cole, I knew instantly he wasnt just another rapper. His lyrics are so deep and he touches on stuff most are afraid to write about, especially in the rap game. "This is the part that the thugs skip!"
This was a really dope documentary bro. Nas is my favorite emcee of all time and J Cole is keeping real Hip-Hop alive through his lyrics. Had to sub. Salute.
Thats exactly what he explained in his reply song, he gets that radio records are needed but wanted to warn him so he doesn’t go astray with his real music
@@haadyabdul1683 Gotcha, I appreciate it. This is why more insight was asked for, I got “old man yells at the sky” vibes from the video. Instead Nas showed love from a OG perspective; been there, done it, learn from me.
@@QSteadyAskImReady43 He's saying Nas is levels above Cole in rapping. I love J Cole and all, but you don't exactly ruin the reputation of someone like Nas. Ask Jay Z what happened when he tried...
Nas is the greatest rapper of all time. There's no debate. Nas is timeless. We all remember when we heard our first Nas song, I can't remember the first time I heard anyone else's rap song
brother you put it in words perfectly. I still remember the day i first heard ether. i asked my uncle, “who is that?!” i was like 11 at the time, but it had been out for a while 😂😂😂
@T3n50r It's not nostalgia. I'm 18, grew up listening to kendrick lamar, eminem, and kanye west. I started going through all the goats catelogues (Pac, big, Nas, JayZ, Lupe Fiasco, Mf Doom etc), and I have come to the conclusion that NO ONE can touch Nas. Nas is the goat.
@@josephbooker259 Nas is one of the greats, but not the goat. His discography isn't big enough, he's been super relevant and made his mark forever for a certain time period if we should be objective about it. Compared to others unfortunately that's it. Don't get me wrong tho. I'm big on Nas as well and always took his side in the Jay-Z vs Nas discussions. Listened through his discography more than once. Grew up listening to him, too and everyone else you mentioned along with Rakim, Wu-Tang, Rugged Man, Brotha Lynch, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Herc, DJ Shadow, Doom, Afrika Bambaata, Outkast, KRS one, Big Pun, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Hieroglyphics (Del da Funky Homosapien in particular) etc. etc. There's just too many with history and discographies that can't label him as Goat. I'd even accept Kanye for that spot and I don't even particularly fuck with his music personally
this was an amazing documentary bro, i can tell you have a deep love for this man and the desire you have translated so well into the video please keep pumping out content and keep inspiring 💪
Someone at the top like JayZ needs to pay attention to only those who prove themselves to get his attention. Which is what J cole did. Do you know how many people who have reach out to him and disappointed him! No wasting of energy and time
Enjoyed this documentary man! Good introspective into some of Cole's history. I gotta be honest though - I'm not fucking with the misleading title g. There's no way Cole could ever destroy or 'almost' destroy Nas' reputation. Nas was already a cemented legend long before Cole dropped that song.
19:27 the take is crazy, man. Why would he loose fans over an opinion that majority of JCole fans shared? I find it interesting that he made songs about two of his idols and both let him down in some way.
Always loved cole but never got the chance to do a deep dive into his backstory. Went to visit his old house a month ago and it felt so weird knowing an icon lived there. Hope he does a record with Em before either of them stop music.
@@tigerbozoI feel what you're saying, but I also believe em could tap into that "past self" somehow - he just needs the right subject matter maybe, the proper inspiration or whatever. Lyrically new em runs circles around his old shit, but somehow his old shit just hits so much harder. More connection to the songs I guess. Even if we just get a symbol song though I would still love to hear what I think are the 2 contenders for goat on a track together. 🔥
We need more people in the rap culture not born after 2000 because imagine thinking Nas rep could be destroyed. J Cole still hasn’t made a certified classic like Illmatic. Sit down.
Fans don’t understand Cole was getting no love until 2014. People was still Sleeping on born sinners, Friday night lights, sideline story. The masses of Fans really didn’t show him love which is sad until middle child right? Crazy. Cole the truth fasho
Cole had a cult following for years prior, but it was a very large cult following there’s a reason he was grouped with Kendrick and Drake when he first hit the scene as well …there was a running internet joke for a long time that Cole was a “boring” rapper but that’s the only slight I can remember early in his career other than what’s being mentioned in this video. IMO Cole reached another plateau and started getting the critical acclaim around 2016-2018 he had an impeccable run appearing on guest features it reminded me of Wayne’s run in 2007
Jesus my man, god bless for taking this much interest in hip hop. But you really need to understand the difference between nas and j cole. Nothing but love all good and love brother
Yo J Cole's mother should get mad props. I am not a fan of J Cole generally speaking, but she seems to be the whole reason for him being anything at all today.
I think Royce said it best “Drop a lonzo balls corpse of on nas porch dog, that’s for the blasphemy”. But of all rappers it’s nice to see Cole finally getting the respect he deserves because he has been in his bag recently putting out just straight bangers
I think it’s worth talking about how nas responded respectfully and shared his thoughts in a helpful way which is something j. Cole has gone on to do for rappers coming up(lil pump interview for one) it’s obvious this is something that was impactful for who he is as a person and he acts accordingly
Man that joint Who Dat put me on to Cole.. I knew then he would be a problem. His ability to grind and not loose focus is what makes artists like him great. That hunger never leaves.. 🫡💯 🔥🔥Documentary !!
When Jcole sample: freedom or jail clip insert.... My brother was like Yo... That is Jcole i m talking About... I was like yeah... You were born in 20s...
you pick really smart titles that get you to click and comment because you're posting an ambiguous, non click bait but irresistible titles, that are guaranteed to go over most so they'll comment how your title is wrong. Like this video could've been called "Jcole impresses nas" or some other literal title, you cracked the code brother, taking notes. Much love homie
The “time and place” argument doesn’t work here because Nas said his opinion in private. Cole made it public. And No ID told Cole a convo Nas had with him in private. Nas’ sentiments was that he didn’t want the world to pigeonhole Cole and first impressions are important. Fortunately Nas was cool about it because looking back it was wack of Cole to make that song.
Nas knows the game , he shouldve knew that he needed to put that song out … Nas had to put out some real shitty songs that were attempts for a radio single… this played out great though ..
Nas…Idk if Cole destroyed his reputation or not, But Nas Is Like and Ether have been on top of my Spotify for an eternity now. I love Nas man! He doesn’t rap, He spits all the truths and darkest turns of life. He the 🐐🐐
This is a bold faced lie Nothing of Cole’s song ruined Nas in ANY sense Cole simply told his story about how he felt over Nas being disappointed And he understood why Nas looked at that track he put out that way. “Was I not up to par when I followed my heart? Granted, my heart was tainted….” There was zero energy towards Nas Which is WHY Nas made Made Nas Proud Because then Nas showed he DID understand what Cole was tryna tell him on why Cole even made that hit record and the reasons for it Nas looked at Cole as “One of Dem Ones” Like those rappers you really need to keep an eye out for And was like, Cole you ain’t gotta go that route, just speak what you feel and fuck if it sells! Which is shown in how Cole did 2014 Forest Hills Drive
I can assure you no one in NC thinks Fayetteville is any kind of dangerous. Poor, yes but not dangerous. Love Cole but he playin like Fayetteville is OG
