How Jay-Z Avoided A Hard Knock Life

If you haven’t noticed, Jay Z gone full KD. Kevin Durant. Hova’s in the zone. Check out these past couple of weeks: He was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame and dropped a twitter storm of shoutouts. Check the full story on AmbrosiaForHeads. Obama even sent him a congratulations video. He released a statement about his plans to bail out father’s on father’s day, along with the official announcement for his upcoming album 4:44 complete with a preview clip. Reportedly the song is called Adnis, which is the name of Shawn Carter’s father. Adnis is a recurring character in Jigga’s post Dynasty raps. But do we really start hearing about Hov’s relationship with his absentee father if Jay Z gets convicted for stabbing Lance Un Rivera? Here’s a theory for you to completely disregard.

This episode took me through far more emotional ups and downs that I expected. I've never been the biggest Jay-Z fan, but I always respected the hustle along with the passion his fan base has maintained for him over the years. This is the first time anyone has been able to humanize him in a way that reaches me. I'll be coping a physical copy of his new album when it drops now. #RealTalk

dope shirt as always, like the sticker on the back of the laptop... what an incredible breakdown on jay z, as a kid from a single mother and now having two children of my own that i love and take care and provide for everyday while managing 20+ legit hussles, this speaks volumes to our generation where we never had dads and it motivated us to get up and be the fathers we never had, manhood shit. I think we see jay go obama esque with a slight revolutionary edge, jay sits back and def is noticing how its working for kendrick, its time hes mature and hes showed glimpses of it in the past with dead prez collab and talib kweli mention..... come on jay speak out on the industry and whos running i mean ruining america!!!

First of all, your t-shirts are the real GOAT, Justin! Second, I consider Hov the most important literary voice of the last 30 years, in that he is the foremost voice in the most pervasive form of literature of the time period: Rap Music. It is inspiring to watch Hov take note of his own influence and strive to live up to his full potential as a leader, not just in Hip-Hop, but the broader American society.

Do you think he will get his props in life? His haters date it back to 96. Claiming he'd be at McDonald's had they not died. Although he dropped a classic (ultimately) before that. When do you think the moment was that made it cool to discredit his every accomplishment? I hope you have the answer to these questions. Oh yea, I'm in the minority that doesn't think he got killed on Renegade.
@TheCompanyMan
@TheCompanyMan 7 лет назад
I think his peers gave him props a while ago. I think the last holdouts are those most critical of his content more so than his talent and accomplishment. Jay calls it aspirational rap... but sometimes it can feel like Trickle Down Success, especially when you're telling people to watch the throne and rapping about basquiat during a financial crisis. There's arguably a tone deafness there. But overall, I don't think Jay Z is short on props by any means. I had a homie who feels like he ate Eminem on Renegade. Only one homie, but still. Either way, Hov was the fish out of water on that one. Em made the beat and had the song already before Hov hopped on it. That's when I really started respecting Eminem.
@Gemini050788
@Gemini050788 7 лет назад
The Company Man Media Yeah I think that's when most were forced to acknowledge Em was nice. I more so meant the content in his verses. MY LORD that 2nd verse!!!! Very Smart if you ask me! Like the flight attendants always say, "When the oxygen masks are deployed; you must put on your mask first and then put the mask of your dependants afterwards". I honestly think that if any "Rapper" can make a difference. In the terms of the Exploitative Bail Industry . It can be Jay-z. For the simple fact he like literally jay z and I would hope he could peek around those places and see if he got "his foot in the door". it's gonna take the right money getting to the right persons to get new laws in . With Donald Trump being president I'm pretty sure we can agree we're fighting a battle we can't win right now.. I'm saying Donald trump has all the money. But it's not a over night success, we have to star small and grow . Like inside out city's and really getting people voting

Hov def doesn't become the man he is today without the absence of his dad. That likely fueled him to do something bigger. A guy like him has more you prove when the stakes are higher. It's obvious that it made him question the state of our communities. Reasonable Doubt was a conscious album, from a hustlers standpoint. It was like Hustlers Convention for the 90s. Strategically he had to shift from that to become the guy that could make Weinstein deals to tell our stories to a wider audience. It's dope that now he can become more cerebral and political. The people that count Hov out aren't looking at the grand scheme.

I talked to a few people about it over the last two days (after we shot this episode, sadly). I got some color around the direction, which sounds like something I'll enjoy. No one's said it's better than AMerican Gangster, which I believe is his last great album.
@SDot-tt8yf
@SDot-tt8yf 7 лет назад
The Company Man Media American Gangster is my favorite Jay album so that's the mark I want him to reach lyrically, but I guess that's to much to expect. Did they just not mention it or did they explicitly say it's not as good? I just want to know why Jay couldn't take some of his incredible features from across the decade (Shiny Suit Theory, Devil is a Lie, Free Mason, We Made It, Seen It All, etc etc) and translate it into a project, Shiny Suit Theory and a few others are top ten Jay verse material for me.

Yes, Jay needs to release new music. There aren't enough Where Have You Beens in his catalog. I feel as though I've gotten a better understanding of Jay from reading Decoded than I have from listening to his music, which sounds weird considering that he pretty much covers the same topics. There's just so much more depth and humanity to the book that much of his discography lacks. Not all, maybe not even most, but too much of his catalog is lacking in these things. You don't have to look hard to find 'old skool' heads talking about how Hip Hop was about speaking truth to power and giving an outlet for those who had no voice. It was about rebelling against 'the man'. In some ways I feel that Jay-Z rebelled against rebelling. A poster boy of the American Dream promoting a message embedded in the hearts of (hyper) capitalists the world over. He's rightly been criticised for a lack of social commentary over the years and I'm glad that he appears to be straying into areas that might cause some controversy. I don't expect 4:44 to be a breakout conscious album though. I agree that the Un situation was the catalyst that changed Jay's output as an artist for the better, but I need some convincing that it did more for him than that. Jay might not have believed that he'd reach the level that he is at now, but he and his team were always making big entrepreneurial moves. Without more data I can't say that the Un case was anything other than an obstacle that he managed to sidestep, at least in regard to him being a business mogul. I look forward to returning to comment on this video. Props again to Justin for another great vid and for subtly promoting the reading of books.

I love that he's going at the bond system, honestly. We need as many powerful voices going at the prison industry as possible. How you been brother? I know losing P hit home for you. Earth lost a real one.

I HOPE it'll be dope, especially having NO I.D. produce all of it (as has been mentioned) and NO I.D. has delivered some fine product in the past so all I'ma say is that. HOVE HIGH HOPES.

I'm a little hurt by Hov partnering with Sprint with tidal especially knowing they did to Diamond Reynolds, Philando Castile girlfriend (giving her phone information without a warrant )
