Jerry, what's the point of leaving such a huge tip when all you're doing is making the kitchen hand and guy washing the dishes in the back jealous of your waitress. They at least had a role in preparing your food and cleaning your plate before it's use. The waitress brought your food over from the counter, walked 10 metres and now we have to stop what were doing and make sure to leave the right tip in order for her to be adequately compensated for her really difficult work. The guys in the back in the hot kitchen are doing way more work in an unpleasant environment but they wont see a penny of your $100 or however much you left.

I disagree, because a really good waiter is more likely to do better than he or she would with a normal base pay. Also, profit margins aren’t great for restaurants in the first place, so if they paid their workers more, you would definitely see a significant raise in prices, so how much the customer pays would be about the same regardless of the system, unless you’re jerry, of course.

@@theguywhoisaustralian1465 I get the argument that the whole idea of tipping is silly, especially since we all normally agree to consistently pay in the 15 to 20 percent range, but that's just the way things are. I didn't create the system. From the waiter's standpoint, I'd much prefer the tip system since you have a chance of receiving more than you would with a base pay. My dad who died in 2017 was a multiple millionaire. He own a construction company for over 50 years.. Everyone knew him locally because his last name was on the trucks and cranes around town....Not to mention government contracts on roads and buildings....The local restaurants he ate at often even saved a table for 6 right by the servers area just for him...when I was young I use to met up with him and go to lunch on occasion. He always tipped 50% to 100%.. All his contracts and referrals for business he said cam with a price...Your reputation is everything in business. When your rich you can't afford to lose it and must pay a premium to those who are less fortunate.....shitting on minimum wage people acting like a king gets nothing but hatred. Even if the service isn't great he said he tipped. Seinfeld is worth 900 million dollars.....everyone knows he's a 1%ter. Anything less then 100% and rumors would damage he's reputation.

So do you tip by how much wealth you have? So if Warren Buffett wants dairy queen he should leave a $1000 tip. That just sounds ridiculous to me. The waitress probably just makes $10/h. So getting a hour worth of pay for refilling a coffee is not bad. Where I live 10% is maybe the minimum. 15% - 20% is average. 25% or more is a good tip.

$10 on $37 is fair, no matter how much money you have.
@ShmuelWeintraub
@ShmuelWeintraub 5 лет назад
Sure. But it's not about what is "fair". As Seinfeld said, the concern is that the stars will get negative reputations as horrible tippers... so they overtip to (hopefully) build good PR. Does that actually 'matter'? I don't know... but they can do it, so they do. Just like Seinfeld could travel from place to place in a 1989 K-car. It would do the job. But he doesn't because he can afford to drive something better.
@Dontworryaboutanything
@Dontworryaboutanything 5 лет назад
ShmuelWeintraub 27% is overtipping... And some k-car isn’t even relevant to the tipping situation
@ShmuelWeintraub
@ShmuelWeintraub 5 лет назад
@@Dontworryaboutanything : 27% is not necessarily "overtipping". Why do you try and make a blanket rule about it (for other people, naturally, because ?). Maybe the service was great. IF Seinfeld (or anyone else with the financial wherewithall to leave a large tip) wants to do so, why is it your business? It's not YOUR money Seinfeld is leaving.
@Dontworryaboutanything
@Dontworryaboutanything 5 лет назад
ShmuelWeintraub I just stated that 27% is fair. I don’t give a shit what somebody leaves, your the one making a weird thing of a simple statement. And it’s not even Seinfeld’s money in the bit, it’s Sarah Jessica Parker’s. You’re an idiot, and obviously a server.

I really like that Jerry scolds Sarah for leaving such a mediocre, albeit normal tip. What I think he means is, as a rich celebrity, give a rich celebrity sized tip. If I was in their position, I'd do the same. If the check was even small enough, I'd give more than the amount. Like a $5 check gets a $10 tip. Same with Seth: Jerry- How much tip did you give? Seth- It was a good one. Jerry- Was it "show business good?"

Our household income is about $98,000 before taxes and insurance. We left a $135 tip on a $78 dinner bill a few months ago. We usually leave 25% to over 100% tip at any traditional diner or restaurant. Buffet is usually $5 to $10 and on Christmas we leave $50 for each waitress. I eat last month at a Diner for breakfast while my wife was at the dentist. It was $18 and I left a $20 tip. I am retired, but my wife still works. We both grew up working at restaurants. It's not about bragging. It's about showing everybody is not the same... some people actually care.
