This video is dedicated to how Jon Nelson changed Rock Crawling in the early 2000's to what it is today. The infamous Driver and Spotter duo of Jon Bundrant and Larry McRae were kind enough to sit down with us to talk about the journey of Tiny and Scrapper.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jon, no one else knew who he was. Of course, I felt in the presence of royalty knowing the background of Nelson & Nelson Racing....such a nice guy.

I find it amazing that the first new design wasn't banned.Here in New Zealand I came up with a radical new speedway car back in the late 70's. It was showing it to the oppostion so they changed the rules after 2 yrs and got rid of it, along with other ones being built. By the way, I also ran #82.

Not sure exactly what the rulebooks said but 'Tiny' wasn't a big enough change in certain ways to justify a rule change, because the other rock crawlers had custom roll cages, but many of the utilized factory frame rails from Jeeps and Toyotas.

Tiny, with it's Type1 VW engine got everyone's attention. I think Scrapper had a 3L type 4. I also think Jon was the first one to introduce filling the front tires with water.

He also filled the tires with lead shot at one point because Scrapper was about 500lbs under minimum weight

How much would it cost to build a rig like that? Looks simple if they had some plans.

@@bradywilliams2666 In just hard costs, it's probably less than 30k if you bought everything new... Tubing, a vw motor, trans, looks like I saw a transfer case, shocks, wheels, tires, guages, and a few other bits and bobs... If you do the work yourself and buy used, I bet you could do it less than 15. I just need some plans. I can weld and build stuff, but I have no idea how to build a tube buggy and get the geometry right. Bare bones basic, but very capable.

@@Chris-zo5ze Fabbin 801 sells a weld together kits and welded chassis. Cheapest is $3200. It cost me about $10k to build my CJ buggy thing back in 2008-11. Doing all the work myself including building the frame and cage. This was used parts mixed with new when I had to. Now everything is more expensive.
