Born around 1923 in the West Cameroon region, Joseph KADJI comes from the large DEFOSSO family of Bâna, inBamiléké pay s in the West ofCameroon. Without a diploma at the age of 16, Joseph Kadji leaves his village to which he is so attached, the young teenager, decided to join his sister Njengoue in Bonabéri where she has been living for some time with her in-laws. His mother who, thanks to his business in palm oil has made some savings, will give him some money for the big trip. It is the descent to Douala that will be sparse with stopovers, Mbanga, Bonabéri.
Kadji Defosso arrives in the port city at this time when french Generals de Gaulle and Leclerc raise a black army to fight the Nazi forces. It is only slightly that the teenager escapes the enlistment by force that is taking place in the country. Young people are embarked either to fight on the European front, or to go to work in the Mungo plantations that have been requisitioned, and which produce food to feed the French army. This is called the war effort.
1940, the young Kadji finally made the crossing to reach Douala. It is only done by canoe since the bridge does not yet exist. He lives in small shops, and multiplies experiences. The young Defosso, very resourceful, works as a labourer at Dad Chitcha's. He also collects merchandise from a Greek merchant every morning, spends the day selling it and hands over the proceeds every night.
While working at Papa Tchitcha, his tutor, Kadji Defosso is already planning to set up his own business, to open his shop. This idea naturally goes through the principle of the tontine to which he is deeply attached. Thanks to this contribution, but also to his hard work, to the death of his mentor Papa Tchitcha, Joseph Kadji will open his shop No. 1 at the Besséké market in Douala. A bazaar where we sell everything possible.
This shop N°1 under the name Commerce général is the foundation on which he begins to build. And, the young man decides to found his family which for him is a guarantee of stability.
