How Kingsman Pulled Off One Of The CRAZIEST Fight Scenes In History

The Kingsman: Secret Service blew audiences away with its modern approach to the James Bond era of spy thrillers. One scene in particular though stuck with movie goers long after the credits rolled. The famous Church Brawl in The Kingsman is a perfect example of how the perfect director, editor, cinematographer, stunt coordinator, and music direction, can take a fight sequence to a place we've never seen before.

Well, I can tell you in my honest opinion. I'm getting tired of villains like Thanos, for example, who sees himself as the hero of the story and complicated plots. Where is the villain who is evil by evil, who steals the baby's candy and laughs like a maniac? Oh, kidnap the girl (or the man if you can enjoy that kind of story) from the hero and tie her up on the train rails. Today's movies need to bring in the villains who do simple things to have variety, otherwise everything ends up being the same story with a twist there or there.

The one thing you forgot was the context of the szene in the movie. Putting the mentor of the hero into an almost impossible to survive situation, then giving us hope by allowing him to put all stops to fight out of that situation just for him to be shot right afterwards is an emotional rollercoaster. And it allows us to empaphice even more with Eggsy when he reacts to the death of Harry. Just imagine Harry standing somewhere being randomly shot. I honestly don't even think the movie would work that way.

This scene is also amazing thanks to the dedication of Colin Firth, who accepted to do all his stunts himself (something really rare in the industry) and trained for weeks to be able to interpret the choreography perfectly. This allowed the director to follow him constantly without needing to use tricks to hide the stuntman’s face, thus adding to the emotional and physical impact of the scene.

That is a really low treshold for wondering that. The news is more chocking every day. Wonder how he'd react to the ending of Hereditary or some of the diner scenes in Twin Peaks. Or what about the 12 minute ininterupted graphic rape scene in Irreversible. Kingsman is not a groundbreaking movie or shocking. The violence is, as the narrator says, hyperviolence which removes the shock value as it is immediately identified as theatrical.

Fights are more often directed by the 2nd Unit Director, who in this case was the AMAZING Bradley James Allan (former member of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team). I'm a long time fan of this channel, but it's disappointing to not see Allan come up given that he passed away less than a month ago. He was one of the greatest fight choreographers and action designers of the last 20 years, and was heavily involved in this scene. He worked on every Kingsman movie including the upcoming The King's Man. RIP to one of the all time greats.

This is one thing I love about being alive in this era. A hyper violent action scene can exist, be as bloody as the director wants, and can be executed so perfectly that it’s dissected online and admired for its art. Meanwhile early in film history showing a thigh was suggestive. And psycho was “shocking “.
@lightningmonky7674

It definitely was shocking for the time, don't get it twisted, it's cause of movies like psycho we can even have kingsmen, I dislike jerking off old stuff just cause its classic (Seinfeld) as much as the next guy but it still deserves credit right? @sean_mccadden
@sean_mccadden 2 года назад
The great thing about what they do as opposed to fight scenes in other action movies at the time is it has a focus point. Theres so much chaos going on around them but the camera always moves with the person its focused on so you can see exactly whats going on with them instead of like you said with the Bourne scene where it looks like they’re fighting in an earthquake which is kinda nauseating and makes it incredibly difficult to see whats going on
@matthewparker9276
@matthewparker9276 2 года назад
What makes the shakeycam work in this movie is that it doesn't hide any of the action. There is no blurring or elements out of shot or even focus which would make the scene look not so nice. And this is possible because they didn't physically shake the camera, they kept the camera movements as smooth as possible and added in the shake during post.
@NeilBlumengarten
@NeilBlumengarten 2 года назад
This scene also sets up the stakes for the climax. The long shot of the beach wouldn't work if we didn't have this close-up scene. While the climax featured everyday locations, this scene shows us a church, which should be thought of as safe and peaceful in body, violent chaos. By doing so, we really feel that it could happen anywhere. It was also brilliant to show us a racist church, so we have no sympathy for the everyday people getting killed in incredibly gruesome ways. Our focus remains on Harry and we have the cognitive dissonance of knowing this is wrong, but also accepting they are bad people getting what "they deserve." Like the characters affected, you find yourself enjoying the violence and maybe even cheering the deaths on, only to later realize how horrific it is.

I have watched The Kingsman twice, but the church scene over 50 times. Every single time is mindblowing perfect.

Saw this in theaters when it first came out. The entire audience in the theater was Silent in that quiet part right after the scene when someone yelled out "Hallelujah!". It's my favorite theater memory ever XD

This scene is so incredible; I remember sitting in the theater absolutely gobsmacked and audibly saying 'wow, holy shit' and then sitting in awe at the completion...then being flabbergasted as I looked around to see the non existent reactions of others in the audience. This movie is an absolute gem and will be a favorite for the rest of my time.

This Kingsman church fight scene was brilliant, the pacing of the music and editing makes it much better to watch it again like Nerdstalgic.

You barely even acknowledged Free Bird, arguably the greatest song of all time. The slow consistent build until the dramatic "turning up to 11" (they literally turn the dial on the sim card machine all the way up) the snap into the riff of the song and the snap into the riff of violence is beautifully synchronised. I dont have the words to emphasise how much of a perfect fit the song is.

Comic books translated to the bigscreen strooongly reminds me of Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. You guys should do a video on that! Or if you haven't seen it yet, check it out, it's literally a comic book made into a movie! 😀

This is one of the best fight scenes I have ever seen in a movie. It reminds me of the over-the-top fights and movies in general, like the old west bar fights, Etc. I can't get enough of this movie scene. it seems seamless and one take. It's one of the scenes that will go down in movie history. Whenever you look up epic fight scenes, this is one of them. I don't think I would have remembered The Kingsmen without the church Massacre scene. People went to see this movie for the ultra-violent death that this scene produced. I am willing to bet, this church scene was also the most expensive scene to film for the entire movie. Looking back, I would have loved to have had the 7 minutes of violence in here.
