Kevin me and my brother are in a tournament last July. It's burning hot. We've fished shallow all day and we get down to the last hour of the tournament before we have to go to the weigh in. First cast on a ledge my brother pulls up a 4 pounder on a 6xd. The next cast I hook a 6 pounder. Within 30 minutes, me and my brother have 4 fish, 13 pounds in the boat. Come to find out we actually win the tournament & big fish by 6 pounds. Ever since then, I've been gathering deep diving crankbaits and I'm saving up for the KVD cranking rod& low gear ratio reel too!
Brand loyalty, yes yes... Nrx for everything feel related...st croix for the rest. Shimanos on everything. Am I great bass fisherman? Meh....but I know what my gear feels like
I have no boat. A shore fisherman i am. Many times i fish ponds with no visible structure...maybe some rocks along a dam. Most ponds i fish are less than fifty acres. Suggestions plz. What lures?? Areas to look for??

So as far as using a crankbait... can it be effective if run through the middle of the water? Kinda like a swim bait? Or should we always be trying to hit bottom?
You always want to be hitting something, or doing something to make the bait change direction to trigger strikes. KVD talks more about this in his full seminar, check it out at bassu.tv.
Growing up on a budget, I was reluctant to target structure, afraid I'd lose my precious bait. And I caught only a few bass. I have caught bass without my crankbait lures hitting structure, however, that said, it's fewer bass than I hit banging or reflecting off structure. Last year trying to free my KVD lipless crank out of grass my biggest bass whacked it. And another big bass did the same at another lake. Now I'm allowing my bait to hit cover and getting more fish to the boat.
Interesting how similar and over the top nascar and bass fishing is these days. Nascar should start selling fishing gear lol. (and maybe they do already)
I wear my companies Name on my shirt every day. So, Will people quit bad mouthing him for wearing his uniform when he goes fishing. Thats how he gets to do the things he does because of his sponsor's. Shawn
this is my first summer fishing and ive bought a few crank baits but ive never caught anything on them. i fish small ponds with soft bottoms am i doing something wrong or is this just not the place to be using a crank bait?
Some colors may imitate baitfish not found in small ponds. You may want to focus on bluegill patterns. I've done well in small ponds with soft plastic crawfish and lizards texas-rigged. Check out all our instructional videos as bassu.tv.
Kory Noll I fish similar water systems that has soft bottoms too. For me, I found best to use crankbaits that will dive in the suspended level. For me when I fish shallow, I would throw on something that dives 3 feet at most because I don’t want my crankbait to snag dirt or vegetations. I recommend the SPRO Fat John 50, that dives to 2 feet.
Maybe check out Cashion rods, they have a lifetime warranty against defects on their Elite series rods and will replace them for $40, not a bad deal if you're worried about breaking expensive rods.
